The Season 48 Halifax Raiders:

Following the Season 48 SMJHL entry draft I have decided to take a hard look at the Season 48 Halifax Raiders and what they have to offer.  The goal is to drastically improve on the disappointing season they had in season 47 where they finished it off by moving some high caliber players for future draft picks.  The Raiders have lost a number of Capped players this season because of their SHL team requiring their services.  Some Familiar names that have moved to the SHL include Montgomery, Laraque, Reynolds and Kholin.  Because of this a lot of younger players have been given the opportunity of more ice time in the hopes it will help them develop their game and become stars in the SMJHL and eventually the SHL.

Management: @Lemonade @flareon4043 We have a new look at the Raiders new management team.  With Flareon getting appointed to GM of the Raiders he had quite the difficult decision picking a new Co-Gm. With a number of fantastic application he eventually decided on Lemonade as his right hand man.  Lemonade is new to the league but has thrived in the little time he has spent on the site.  Going from an FA signing to the Raiders to number 7 overall in the SHL draft and first Raider off the board.

Left Wing:

Elijah Richardson – @ElijahR92 Elijah is an offensive forward who is probably known best for his smooth skating and ability to avoid opposition players with the puck on his stick. Elijah is probably the one of the best Skaters in the SMJHL if not the best with a Skating value of 85. Elijah is poised to fill out the bottom six roll for the Raiders in this upcoming season.

Ricky Spanish – @Whikadoodle Similar to Elijah, Spanish sports one attribute that stands above the rest which is his ability to thread a pass from tape to tape.  While this playmaking forward has a fantastic passing attribute of 88 the rest of his game requires a little bit of work. The Raiders were thrilled to land Spanish when they did and they are hopeful that his slick passes will rub off on the rest of the team.  Expect to see Spanish spending time on the third line with some dabbling on the second line.

Cuthbert Coppercorn – @moonlight Cuthbert made his way to the Raiders through free agency last season.  Coppercorn possesses the ability to put the puck I the net and will hopefully have a lot to contribute on the scoreboard in season 48 having a losses a few star players to their respective SHL teams.  Coppercorn also possesses a strong two way game and could get a little bit of time on the penalty kill. Expect to see coppercorn bouncing between the second and third line.

Josef Kubinec: @"Marc Bradford" Josef plays a strong two way game with a strong scoring touch and a great first pass. While not the most physical player, he is positionally sound and will hopefully have a lot to contribute this season.  After the trade deadline moves last season Kubinec was bumped up to the first pairing and had some success there. You can expect to see this dynamic forward anchoring the first like left winger spot this season where he should continue to put up points while preventing as many as possible from the oppositions first line

Right Wing:

Jon Snow: @ckenny45 selected in this year’s SMJHL entry draft, Jon snow does know something… how to play hockey. Known for his skating he also has some pretty good numbers across his attributes making him a decently well rounded player.  As a rookie you can expect to see him anchoring the fourth line using his skating and strength to provide energy to the team when they need it most.

Cody – @Winter is Coming Selected third overall by the Halifax Raiders, Cody was very high on a lot of general manager’s draft boards because of his shooting prowess. Halifax management is expecting a lot from their rookie first rounder which is not the easiest task to complete against top 6’s that boast mostly capped players.  Hopefully Cody’s eye for the net will allow him to contribute to the Raiders success and ensure there is depth scoring beyond the first line.

[Image: hko-world-junior-three-things-20180105.jpg]

Freddie Sweeney: @Toast Another shoot first winger who the Raiders hope to utilize in an expanded role in his second season in Halifax.  The biggest thing Freddie Sweeney brings to the table is his versatility.  Able to comfortably play both wings Sweeney should give management a lot of different looks from the winger position.  Expect to see Sweeney bounce between the second and third pairing as he continues to try to develop on his defensive side of the game.

[Image: gettyimages-961879248-e1531953699442.jpg]

Atlas Rush: Recently named the Captain of the Halifax Raiders, Atlas is ready to take the SMJHL by storm this season.  With only four points to speak of in his rookie season, Rush is poised to significantly improve on those numbers as his role with the team will be significantly increased. Where Rush will really leave a mark in the SMJHL is through his hitting.  Last season Rush managed to land 109 hits in a little under 10 minutes of game time a game.  This puts him fourth in the SMJHL in hits as a rookie.  As the Raiders only capped winger he a lock for the top Right Wing position and should spend the majority of his time there.  Rush is also expected to get ample special teams time which should help increase his point totals.

Centers:

[Image: buffalo-sabres-defenceman-rasmus-ristola...076641.jpg]

Timmo Kyllonen: @Lemonade The newest member to join the Halifax Raiders management, Kyllonen was an absolute steal as a free agent acquisition. Spending most of his time last season on the fourth line, Kyllonen looks to vastly improve on those numbers in his second season.  He will also likely receive some special teams time which should help improve those numbers as well. Timmo is an offensive dynamo with a pass first focus and plays a strong two way game.  Expect to see Kyllonen bouncing between the second and third center position based on team needs.

Taisei-Tiikeri Wawazat:@Wawazat Aquired in a trade with the St Louis Scarecrows after frustrations emerged regarding playing time. This trade provided the Raiders an upgrade at center A true two way forward who possess a fantastic passing and defense attributes.  TT should be an anchor for the Raiders Penalty Killing group.  While not the most physical of players TT provides a strong positional game and has a strong stick checking game.  Expect to see TT bouncing between the second and third center spot depending on the needs of the team.

Esa Parmborg: @Steelhead77 Esa’s playstyle falls right in between the offensive prowess of Kyllonen and the Defensive stalwart in Wawazat. A big advantage Parmborg holds over all other players is his size.  Coming in at 7 feet tall and 350 pounds he is quite the player to square off against.  Even big power forwards like Atlas Rush stop for a second to take in the giant Parmborg.  Esa is a pass first centerman with a strong two way game.  While he is a giant he still needs to work on building onto his massive frame and develop some muscle before he can be truly effective at the SHL level.

Defense:

Jimmy Van Johns: @TheGrza definitely one of the more unorthodox builds on the site, Jimmy puts a lot of emphasis on not taking penalties by sporting a 70 attribute in disciple. He will really need to make a focus on developing his defensive side of the game before he can make a significant impact in the SMJHL or SHL. This offensive defenseman beyond his high discipline has a well-rounded build that should make him a useful 7th defenseman for the Raiders.

Wyatt Ruschkoff: @Sand Other than his fantastic name, Ruschoff is a strong two way defender who poses issues to opposition when trying to knock him off the puck. Wyatt has a pass first mentality and is sound defensively and should be a welcome addition to the Raiders budding defensive core.  Ruschkoff will likely start off on the third pairing as the number 5 for the Raiders with every opportunity of moving up the lineup when his tpe count increases. Raider Nation is really hopeful that Ruschkoff can become a solid defenseman for the Raiders for now and the foreseeable future

Hank O’Callahan:@Tipple  a offense first defenceman with balance of scoring and passing flair. He makes the smart simple plays and is playing his best hockey when he is barely being noticed on the ice.  The raiders will be looking to use his defensive versatility on the ice on the third pairing as the number 6 defenseman.

Ricardo Cotalay: @ElPato An offensive defenceman who has done well in developing his defensive side of the game Ricardo brings an all around game that shouldn’t hinder the Raiders at any point.  He can be used on the Penalty kill or Powerplay depending on the needs of the team. Ricardo will likely start on the second pairing as the number 4 defenseman but will likely be quickly passed by the play of Wyatt Ruschkoff.

[Image: Vancouver+Canucks+v+Toronto+Maple+Leafs+...HkMLkx.jpg]

Duke Duckworth: @leafssteen Another defenseman with a flair for the offence, Duckworth was another free agent signing by the Raiders last season.  Unlike most offensive defenseman Duckworth is known for his powerful but accurate shot from the point that should be put to good use on the Raiders Powerplay.  You can expect to see Duckworth playing second line minutes as the number 3 on the team.

Haley Knight: @satf Knight was another late addition made through free agency due to ties with pervious management.  She is another offensive defenseman with a strong defensive game who boasts a strong accurate shot. She will likely be on the opposite powerplay unit as Duckworth to utilize their shooting chances.  Knight will likely start on the top pairing as the number two defender.

Jaakko Jarvinen: @Clintafernious The team’s only true Defensive defenseman Jarvinen can use his strength and positioning to force opposition players off the puck.  Boasting an inpressive 80 defense, Jaakko will be quite the annoyance for anyone who tries to enter the Raiders zone. Jarvinen also possesses an impressive first pass which should help the Raiders in transition.  Jarvinen will be going into the season 48 SMJHL season as the number 1 defensemen on the Raiders and has a lot of work to do to make up for the loss of Montgomery this season.

Goalies:

[Image: Miikka+Kiprusoff+Calgary+Flames+v+Colora...n1psUl.jpg]

Mike Mckorsy:@Flames1848 Things can get a lot worse than having a capped back up goalie.  Mckorsy provides the raiders with a much needed crutch between the pipes and gives management and the team a sense of relief knowing there is a sturdy, hybrid style goaltender between the pipes when Biz Nasty needs a much needed break.

Biz Nasty: @GrilledTwinkiez Biz Nasty’s play at the end of the season gave Raider nation a great feeling of “we have something special here” While Nasty might have had a little bit of a rough start with the Raiders he came on strong at the end of the season.  Biz Nasty is expected to get the majority of the work load this season and should be capped by the beginning if not a few weeks into the season.

The Raiders boasts a hardy forward group with an eye for the net aswell as strong 200ft game. While the Defense leaves something to be desired it will continue to grow as the season goes on.  The defensive numbers will look better too knowing we have a fantastic goalie tandem supporting them.  The Raiders should make a lot of noise this season in the SMJHL and we really hope that noise will be rivaled by Raider Nation! The team will head into the season 48 SMJHL season being lead by the Hard Hitting Atlas Rush, The Tower Center Esa Parmborg and the young energetic Rookie Cody. Hopefully this leadership group can help the Raiders achieve consistent success at the SMJHL level and help develop the Raider Players into future SHL stars.
