Knights Kelowna Knights vs Lethbridge Lions  Lions

Game 134

Game Link

Special Teams were on display tonight, for better or worse, as 5 of the 6 total goals scored were on the power play in a 4-2 victory for the Lethbridge Lions. Final shots were 26-15 Lethbridge.

1st Period

Not much was going uncalled in this game, and before the 2 minute mark Kelowna was on the power play as Liam Hutchinson was sent to the box for hooking. Not even a full minute after killing off the penalty, Lethbridge was given a power play of their own, with Piotr Horvat being caught for a slash. Joln DuBolk capitalized quickly for Lethbridge as he put them up 1-0. Off the following faceoff a frustrated Touncie Bitties was given a major penalty and a game misconduct for spearing. After a barrage of chances, Austin Roenick put one by Kelowna goaltender, Malcolm Weekes, making the game 2-0. Lethbridge continued to get chances, and drew another penalty from Piotr Horvat. Kelowna’s 3 man PK unit was up to the task however, and killed off both penalties. The shots of the first period were 15-5 in Lethbridge’s favor, thanks to the major penalty.

2nd Period

Lethbridge started strong again this period, and another penalty out of frustration was taken when Raquel Castillo was sent off for roughing, after finishing his check. Quickly off the faceoff Joln DuBolk was given his second goal of the game, making the score 3-0. Piotr Horvat was called for his third stick infraction of the night, and was punished as Monkey D. Luffy gave Lethbridge a 4-0 lead. Despite keeping offensive pressure on, Joln DuBolk took a double roughing and gave Kelowna their first goal of the game on their own power play, scored by Prince Devitt to make the game 4-1 Lethbridge. The shots for the period were 11-5, once again in Lethbridge’s favor.

3rd Period

The third saw increased offensive pressure by Kelowna, outshooting Lethbridge 5-0. Goaltender Harry Carpet and the Lethbridge defence proved to be up to the task. Kelowna was only rewarded with a goal at the 18:54 mark of the period when Tah Puhchees managed to snipe one by Carpet. Unfortunately for Kelowna, it proved too little too late as Lethbridge took home the win with a final score of 4-2.

COMMENT 1 – MVP OF THE GAME
Without question and much hesitation, the most valuable and important player of the game is Boruvka Banananak of the Lions, who was arguably the most important player on the ice for them to help them take a 4-2 win. Banananak was the ultimate playmaker for the Lions, as he managed to earn three assists on the evening, essentially making him at least somewhat responsible for around 75% of the Lions’ total offense during the game. Moreover, Banananak was actually the primary assist earner on all three of the goals he would ultimately assist on, which truly shows just how important and impressive his playmaking skills where during this game. For these reasons and helping the Lions earn a 4-2 victory over the Knights, Banananak is deservedly named the MVP of the game.

COMMENT 2 – MOST IMPORTANT PLAY
This one is a bit tougher to answer as the Lions were seemingly in control for most of the game and there really wasn’t any sort of game tying or game breaking goal that turned the tide for the Lions in a dramatic way. Therefore, we believe the most important play of the game should go to the first goal of the game, the one which gave the Lions the early lead and helped build a 4-0 lead that would prove difficult for the Knights to overcome and come back from. It was a power-play goal scored around five minutes into the game thanks to Joln DuBolk, who earned his 2nd goal of the season, while the primary assists were granted to Boruvka Banananak, earning the first of three assists on the evening and his seventeenth of the season, while the secondary assist was given to Cant Eykhil, earning his twelfth assist on the year.

COMMENT 3 – UNSUNG HERO
Despite scoring two goals during the game, Joln DuBolk was not named to any of three stars of the game, making his performance seem a tad bit underrated. Not only did Joln DuBolk score the very first goal of the game as we mentioned in the most important play of the game, but he also scored the third goal of the game for the Lion in the second period, giving them a 3-0 lead that would prove to be far too significant of a lead for the Knights to try and come back from. Moreover, these goals were Joln DuBolk’s only 2nd and 3rd goals of the season which raises some eyebrows how someone who hasn’t had much goal scoring explosiveness during the season would score two in a single game and be the largest goal scorer of the game for the Lions. For these reasons and the lack of recognition given during the three stars of the game, we consider Joln DuBolk, to be the unsung hero for the Lions and the game as a whole.

Specialty Teams/Power-play:
Kelowna started the game off with the first power play but couldn't cash in on the opportunity, The Lions would get their chances on the man advantage five minutes into the game which would lead to the nights first goal score to give them the lead, a couple of shifts after that they found them themselves back on the PP after a horrific spear by Touncie Bitties, which would lead to a game misconduct and give them the extended 5 on 4 that ended with another goal. Lethbridge would get another chance but ended the period 2/3 and the Knights were 0-1. Going into the second period we only saw three penalties, all leading to goals, two more for the Lions and a goal scored by Prince Devitt to stop the run and get Kelowna on the board. Lethbridge would get another couple of opportunities in the third after two straight penalties from DuBolk, giving him eight in the game but didn't score the Lions end the game with the victory and go 4/5, Kelowna scores half as many with an extra chance and end the game 2/6 on the power play. Blocked Shots/Shots Comparison:
It wasn't the most exciting game to watch and most of the time you probably missed a play because you were on the cellphone or grabbing a hot dog at the concession stand and if you weren't keeping track the Lions almost blocked as many shots as they had against, blocking 14 shots and only allowing 15 against. It was clear Kelowna didn't bring their A game when they allowed 32 shots towards the net, only blocking 6 of them.. not giving their goaltender any help which ultimately lead to the reason why they lost. Workhorses/Ice-time:
It was a night for lots of Gatorade and these players couldn't get off the ice. Defenders and second liners Horvat and Fudge lead the Knights in ice-time, both playing close to a whopping 23 minutes, Fudge would go on to have the most specialty team minutes out of all players, accumulating nearly 9 minutes on the man advantage while Horvat spent a tiring and frustrating 7 minutes. The Lions had a pair of forwards play the most, top center Eykhil and second liner Luffy, both playing around 22 minutes with close to 8 minutes as they lead by example on the both specialty team units.
