Lethbridge Lions defeat Kelowna Knights 2-1.
vs The Lions came out with a victory tonight. The Lions were overall outplayed on the shot counter but still got the victory on the virtue of doing more with less and a strong goaltending performance. The first period: The shot total was 9-4 favoring the Lions. The game started with two early Lions strikes by Vanice and Okabe. The goal by Vanice was a wonderful breakaway set up by a stretch pass by Cody. Okabe had the awareness to get a rebound in the net. In between was a goal by Eriksson. He got a deflection from an Engel shot from the point. The goaltending wasn’t too hot this period as the Knights gave up 2 goals in 9 shots and the Lions one in just 4. The second period: The Knights took over the tempo of the game but nothing went right for them at this point. They dominated the shots 14-6. But it was the Lions who scored on the virtue of Clucker. Clucker’s goal was a thunder strike hitting a hard slapper after faking out the goaltender and the crowd was left in awe. Markus Tegernako took over from this point not allowing any goals to fly in. The third period: The Knights still dominated the game but Tegrenako was still keeping the door shut. The goaltending held steady this period for both sides as neither team could score. Overall summary: The Lions set the pace early and those two goals on top of a stellar goaltending performance kept the game out of reach for the Lions. Tegernako kept the pucks out of the net gave the Lions the victory. Other notes: There were five penalties four of which were committed by the Knights. Being able to limit the Lions to 6 shots in the second period, 6 of those minutes on the penalty kill is fairly impressive. However taking those penalties did them no favors, as what killed them on the night was their failure to score goals. The Lions capitalized on smaller chances of opportunities and while the foot was no longer on the gas after the first period, having the goaltending take over provided the vital difference between victory and defeat. The Lions continue to surge up the table while the Knights struggle this season remain. are the victors. Three Stars: 1 - Markus Tegernako (LBL) 2 - Cal Clucker (LBL) 3 - Rintarou Okabe (LBL) https://simulationhockey.com/games/smjhl...HL-79.html |
