Last Sunday the new seasons SHL entry draft was concluded. Due to the Covid-19 outbreak the draft was held in a Zoom call as GM’s and players are not allowed to meet because of stay at home orders and gathering restrictions. Even in these difficult times the SHL head office was able to put together this draft so that preparations for a possible new seasons can go on as scheduled when restrictions are slowly lifted all across North America.

The Winnipeg Jets had won the draft lottery, but that pick was owned by the Texas Renegades to make the first overall selection in this seasons draft. During the draft quite a few trades were made for teams to move up or down in the draft order, but we’ll get back to that soon. The Texas Renegades, Chicago Syndicate and Baltimore Platoon had two picks each in this first round of the S54 entry draft.

The first 16 picks of the first round were for the following teams:

1. Renegades Texas Renegades (Jets -> Renegades) - Mikkel Asmus Sondergard
2. Stars Toronto North Stars - Ryosuke Sato
3. Wolfpack New England Wolfpack (Renegades -> Wolfpack) - Matthew Sawful
4. Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda - Dwight Knight
5. Stampede Buffalo Stampede (Chiefs -> Stampede) - Emilia Bergman
6. Dragons Calgary Dragons (Platoon -> Dragons) - Mats Marner
7. syndicate Chicago Syndicate - Vitek Vitecek
8. syndicate Chicago Syndicate (pride -> syndicate) - Rotticus Scott
9. Blizzard Edmonton Blizzard (Rage - > Blizzard) - Daniel Laforest
10. Specters New Orleans Specters - Bork Lazer
11. Platoon Baltimore Platoon (Dragons -> Platoon) - Pojo Biscuit
12. Platoon Baltimore Platoon (Stampede -> Platoon) - Patrick Shepherd
13. Chiefs Minnesota Chiefs (Panthers -> Chiefs) - Jack Klompus
14. Renegades Texas Renegades (Wolfpack -> Platoon -> Renegades) - Taitso Jutila
15. Panthers Los Angeles Panthers (Blizzard -> Panthers - Linus Grimstad
16. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks - Simon Takshak

Let’s take a closer look to the first round draftees of this seasons entry draft!

1. Renegades Texas Renegades (Jets -> Renegades) - Mikkel Asmus Sondergard
There was heavy debate on who was going to be the first overall pick in this draft. Many believed it would be Ryosuke Sato, but the Texas Renegades shocked most of the SHL by selecting Mikkel Asmus Sondergard. That immediately set the tone for peoples mock drafts. Mikkel Asmus Sondergard is an elite Danish prospect who is a two-way defenseman currently playing for Maine Timber. He currently sits at 362 TPE and that makes him one of the top and possibly best earner of this draft class. Last season Mikkel Asmus Sondergard scored 6 goals and had 8 assists for a total of 14 points. He was a -16 with an average icetime of about 22 minutes. Maine wasn’t the best team last season, but Mikkel Asmus Sondergard showed his skills regardless and can now look forward to joining to Texas Renegades in the near future joining other SMJHL stars such as Adam Scianna and Edward Williams.

2. Stars Toronto North Stars - Ryosuke Sato
With the second overall pick the Toronto North Stars selected Japanese defenseman Ryosuke Sato. Many believed Ryosuke Sato would be the first overall pick, so it messed with a lot of peoples mock drafts. But it’s no shame in being selected second overall in this pretty good draft class. Ryosuke Sato currently has 303 TPE and is currently playing for the Vancouver Whalers in the juniors league. Ryosuke Sato scored 2 goals and had 7 assists last season in 50 games played for the Whalers. He averaged well over 22 minutes of ice time and was a - 16 just like Mikkel Asmus Sondegard. He blocked 60 shots and also had 58 recorded hits. Ryosuke Sato is now part of a rebuilding Toronto North Stars team and he will be an import piece in their future.

3. Wolfpack New England Wolfpack (Renegades -> Wolfpack) - Matthew Sawful
The New England Wolf pack selected Matthew Sawful with their third overall pick that they acquired from the Texas Renegades in a previous trade. Matthew Sawful is a United States native defenseman currently playing for the Anchorage Armada. He has 299 TPE right now. Matthew Sawful played 50 games last season for the Armada in which he scored 6 goals and had another 15 assists for a total of 21 points, which was one of the highest scoring rookies last season in the SMJHL. He played a little over 19 minutes per game, blocked 40 shots and recorded 17 hits. Matthew Sawful is the third defenseman being picked in this draft out of three picks, so I’m curious to see what we have in the next few selections.

4. Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda - Dwight Knight
With the fourth overall selection Tampa Bay Barracuda selected Dwight Knight. Dwight Knight is a power forward playing on wing. His heritage is unknown. He currently plays for the Carolina Kraken. Last season he played 50 games for the Kraken and he scored 10 goals and had another 11 assists for a total of 21 points. He averaged little over 15 minutes per game so his points per 60 minutes is quite high. His shooting percentage neared 15%. As Tampa Bay has been offloading a lot of their players in the past few weeks they are in full rebuild mode. Dwight Knight will be a key element of their rebuild and will be leading the team into this new era.

5. Stampede Buffalo Stampede (Chiefs -> Stampede) - Emilia Bergman
With the fifth overall pick the Buffalo Stampede selected Emilia Bergman. Emilia Bergman is a defenseman from Sweden currently playing for the Anaheim Outlaws. That’s another defenseman being picked. Emilia Bergman played 50 games for Anaheim last season in which he averaged about 25 minutes of ice time per game. In this games he scored 2 goals and had another 21 assists for a total of 23 points. He blocked 44 shots and had 85 hits. He played a physical game in the juniors last season and was pretty productive as well. So it’s no surprise Emilia Bergman is picked fifth overall in this pretty stacked draft.

6. Dragons Calgary Dragons (Platoon -> Dragons) - Mats Marner
The Calgary Dragons previously owned the eleventh overall pick, but it became obvious that one of their targets was also targeted by another team that would picked before the Dragons. The Calgary Dragons management was able to make a deal with the Baltimore Platoon to trade up to the sixth overall pick. With that pick they selected Mats Marner. Mats Marner is a Ukrainian center currently playing for the Newfoundland Berserkers. Mats Marner currently has 261 TPE. So he is a little behind in development compared to the other players picked before him, but that’s because he was undrafted free agent signing later on in the season. Mats Marner played 44 games for the Newfoundland Berserkers in which he scored 7 goals and had 9 assists for a total of 16 points. He rocked an almost 26% shooting percentage with an ice time over about 10 minutes per game. He blocked 49 shots and had 41 hits. The Calgary Dragons are pretty sure that Mats Marner is going to be a good addition to their prospect pool when they’ve traded up for him with the Baltimore Platoon.

7. syndicate Chicago Syndicate - Vitek Vitecek
After the Calgary Dragons traded up to 6th overall the Chicago Syndicate had to go back to the drawing board to see what else was on their list as Mats Marner was a prime target for them. But they didn’t need to look far. In Vitek Vitecek a Czech Repuplic native they have found a good solid left winger to fill a future forward spot. Vitek Vitecek currently has 371 TPE and is a top earner in this draft class. Last season he played 50 games for the Carolina Kraken in which he scored 13 goals and had 14 assists. He played over 17 minutes per game and had 67 hits.

8. syndicate Chicago Syndicate (pride -> syndicate) - Rotticus Scott
The Chicago Syndicate had back to back picks in this first round and with their 8th overall pick they selected left winger Rotticus Scott. Rotticus Scott is born in Canada and currently playing for the Kelowna Knights. A lot of people though Daniel LaForest was the first person to be selected from the Knights, but Rotticus Scott went silently a lot earlier than most people predicted. Rotticus Scott played 48 games for the Knights in which he scored 1 goal and had 7 assists. He had to play a lot of 4th line minutes and it shows as he just played over 11 minutes per game, but his development has been really good and he should see increased minutes next season as a few Kelowna Knights wingers retired at the end of the previous season.

9. Blizzard Edmonton Blizzard (Rage - > Blizzard) - Daniel LaForest
A bit later than expected the Edmonton Blizzard selected Daniel LaForest with their 9th overall pick. It’s the second center picked in this draft, while many had Daniel LaForest as their number 1 center in their mock. Daniel LaForest is from Montreal Canada and is a big fan of Jaromir Jagr. He currently has 303 TPE and plays for the Kelowna Knights. Daniel LaForest played 49 games for the Knights last season in which he scored 5 goals and had 6 assists for 11 points. He averaged almost 13 minutes per game. He blocked a total of 50 shots, which is quite impressive. It’s also worth to mention that his playing minutes are also likely to increase with a more prominent role on the Kelowna Knights team.

10. Specters New Orleans Specters - Bork Lazer
One of the few picks a lot of people had correct on their mocks was the New Orleans Specters 10th overall pick, Bork Lazer. Bork Lazer is an American defenseman playing for the Anchorage Armada. Currently Bork Lazer has 353 TPE. In the 50 games he played for the Anchorage Armada he was firing his lazers and scored 6 goals and had 20 assists for a total of 26 points. He played over 19 minutes per game on average and he had a total of 55 shot blocks and 94 hits.

11. Platoon Baltimore Platoon (Dragons -> Platoon) - Pojo Biscuit
After trading their 6th overall pick to the Calgary Dragons they got the 11th overall pick back in that trade and selected who other than Pojo Biscuit. Almost everyone had Pojo Biscuit locked as number 6 in their mock draft, but with the previous mentioned trade that all went South. Pojo Biscuit is a United States born defenseman currently playing for the Anchorage Armada. He currently has 293 TPE. Pojo Biscuit only played 11 games for Anchorage while he was a late or early recreate in to the season. He scored 1 goal and had 1 assist for a total of 2 points. His contributions were limited, but his future at Anchorage and Baltimore is in no doubt pretty damn good.

12. Platoon Baltimore Platoon (Stampede -> Platoon) - Patrick Shepherd
The Baltimore Platoon also had back to back picks because of the trade and with their 12th overall pick they selected Patrick Shepherd. Patrick Shepherd is a United States born center currently playing for Maine Timber. Last season he played 50 games for Maine in which he scored 3 goals and had another 12 assists for a total of 15 points. He averaged almost 18 minutes of ice time, which is pretty good for a rookie forward.

13. Chiefs Minnesota Chiefs (Panthers -> Chiefs) - Jack Klompus
With the 13th overall pick the Minnesota Chiefs selected Jack Klompus. Jack Klompus is another United States born native, playing defense for the Newfoundland Berserkers. Jack Klompus current is developing well and sits at 306 TPE. He played 50 games for the Berserkers last season in which he scored 7 goals nad had 6 assists for a total of 13 points. He played on average about 20 minutes per game. He had 70 hits and also had 51 shot blocks.

14. Renegades Texas Renegades (Wolfpack -> Platoon -> Renegades) - Taisto Jutila
With the 14th overall pick the Texas Renegades selected Finish native Taisto Jutila. Taisto Jutila is a center currently playing for the Detroit Falcons and current Four Star Cup Champion. He played 38 games with the Falcons last season and he scored 5 goals and also had 5 assists. He played very few minutes on average each game with almost 9 minutes per game. Some say he might have been recruited by Tom Hanks himself.

15. Panthers Los Angeles Panthers (Blizzard -> Panthers - Linus Grimstad
With the 15th overall selection the Los Angeles Panthers selected Linus Grimstad. Linus Grimstad is a Norwegian native (we don’t see many of them in the SHL) currently playing for the Carolina Kraken. Linus Grimstad is a center who currently has 328 TPE. Linus Grimstad played 48 games for the Carolina Kraken last season and he scored 6 goals and had 6 assists. He played 13 minutes on average per game and blocked 42 shots.

16. Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks - Simon Takshak
And with the last pick of the first round the Hamilton Steelhawks selected Danny Devito, I mean Simon Takshak. Simon Takshak is a winger from Jakarta Indonesia currently playing for the Kelowna Knights. Simon Takshak played 48 games for the Kelowna Knights and scored 5 goals and had 2 assists for a total of 7 points. He played almost 11 minutes per game, had 51 hits and had zero fights. For a goon of his size that’s unbelievable. You would expect more of him in that role, but I guess people felt pity because of his size and that he shoots lasers out of his geckoey eyes.

Looking at the draft and each players position we can conclude the following:

Defense 7
Center 5
Left Wing 3
Right Wing 1
Goaltender 0

9 forwards (with center being the favorite), 7 defenseman and no goaltenders were picked. This is actually the same as last seasons draft. And same as the previous season the defenseman class this season was again really strong and the picks showed that. Specially in the earlier half of the first round. A lot of teams have a defensive need in the near future.

If we look back on all the first round draftees players were drafted from the following teams:

Armada Anchorage Armada 3
Knights Kelowna Knights 3
Kraken Carolina Kraken 3
Berserkers Newfoundland Berserkers 2
Timber Maine Timber 2
Outlaws Anaheim Outlaws 1
Falcons Detroit Falcons 1
Whalers Vancouver Whalers 1
Raptors Colorado Raptors 0
Scarecrows St. Louis Scarecrows 0

What surprises me the most is that only 1 player from the Detroit Falcons was picked in the first round. As current Four Star Cup champion you would expect more, but then again, most players of Detroit were already sophomores. The Anchorage Armada, Kelowna Knights and Carolina Kraken each had 3 players selected in the first round, which shows that their scouting and development has been excellent this past season. Newfoundland Berserkers and Maine Timber both had two people selected in the first round. Anaheim Outlaws, Detroit Falcons and Vancouver Whalers each had 1 person selected and Colorado Raptors and St. Louis Scarecrows saw none of their draft stock selected in the first round.

The players in the first round of this draft are originally from the following countries:

Usa United States 5
World Other 4
Canada Canada 2
Japan Japan 1
Czechia Czech Repuplic 1
Norway Norway 1
Finland Finland 1
Sweden Sweden 1

The United States was well represented in this draft class. Do you think that them winning IIHF had anything to do with it and people wanting to jump on the bandwagon?

So this concludes my analysis of the S54 draft class for the SHL entry draft. I wish all drafted players a great career in the SHL and enjoy the off season while it lasts!
