S56 Timber Awards
#1

Hello. Once again thank you for joining myself during the offseason? Scratch that, pre season. Wow, we have really taken our time getting around to this, haven't we? At this rate our S57 Awards will be around S58 Playoffs. *winks*. Anyway without further ado, let’s get to it!

I’d like to congratulate the Vancouver Whalers on their 4 Star Cup Victory. Gone are the days of us middling at the bottom together and it is nice to see a team get redemption for some basement seasons in the standings.

Individual awards are something that the Timber franchise is excited to present every season. It’s an unofficial mark to the last season, and a time to look forward to the next one. Last season we met an unfortunate, earlier than expected ending in the second round in what was shaping up last offseason to be another strong showing. With the early exit, we got started moving to the future, scouting prospects and setting ourselves up in good shape for the next few seasons. We completed a very strong draft, have solid returning pieces and look forward to seeing what we can accomplish this season with our roster.

Today, we will be presenting 5 Awards: Leadership, Rookie, Forward, Defender - each named after a franchise alumni who excelled in the position the award is being named, and a team MVP named by the management group. Keeping the order we’ve established the last few seasons, on to the show!

First off the board is the Atlas Rush (@Rublic) award named for the best leader both on and off the ice, nominated by their peers. The nominees are:

Patrick Shepherd - Cobb served out his final season in the SMJHL as one of the Assistant Captains on the timber. Throughout his tenure in the SMJHL he competed to be  the best shutdown centerman in the league, striving for an amazing strength at the dot, and highly defensively skilled. Always a good bet that Maine would come away with the puck if he was the one taking the faceoff, immediately putting us on the offense his leadership carried through to the locker room, evolving into one of the “Hype men” pumping the team up for games, especially so in the playoffs.

Alexander Oscarsson - Our captain. Taking over big shoes from Kalashnikov, Oscarsson stepped up in a big way. Leading the way with his pass first mentality, Alex always has been about setting up his team mates for success, whether it is threading the puck through the opposition D for an easy one timer, or helping the rookies navigate the site, Alex can be counted on to be there and ready to help.

Rikard Bjerg - A rising star in the league, and one of the runner ups for the best defensive defenseman in the SMJHL Bjerg is a force on the ice and an ever steady presence in the locker room. Always making sure the streams are announced, and helping out with builds whenever questions are popped, Bjerg will be a foundational part of a very strong defense this season in Maine and will continue leading the way as our other Assistant captain.

All 3 captains were nominated this season for Maine and that’s a great example of their leadership with the letter.

The winner of the Atlas Rush award is …
Oh Captain, My Captain. Alexander Oscarsson! Showcasing leadership day in and day out.
@Zema

Top Rookie is named after Rainbow Dash (@Eggy216) and Mikkel Asmus Sondergard (@Rabidsponge21) - both franchise studs have gone 1oa in both SMJHL and SHL drafts, which is an outstanding feat. Both have had wonderful and impactful careers with the franchise and play an important part in the building the team’s history from completely different eras (and not to mention decades). The nominees for the Dash-Sondergard award are:

Lucas Kaiser - Kaiser came to the team as a Free Agent. Immediately having an impactful presence hitting the score sheet in his first game, he played out of position as a forward, biding his time for a locked in spot on the Defense. He finished out his rookie season playing a little over half the total games, and is looking to make a big splash in his first full season on the squad.

Bigga Foryu - Foryu also came as an undrafted rookie, declaring very shortly after the SMJHL draft, Maine was able to find our goaltender of the future, with Bloomey entering his ultimate season. He understood his place as understudy, and set on learning much from one of the SMJHL’s greatest clutch goalies we have ever seen. Putting up respectable stats in his 11 games played, even posting a shutout, this rising star has open waters ahead of him and we’re looking forward to him making the crease his home for the next few seasons.

Sean Gatez - A Maine 18th overall pick should be all the foreshadowing you need for a sure thing. I don’t know what it is about that pick that produces excellence, but after we called his name on the draft floor rumor was some other teams were keying on this young stud defender. He leapfrogged the rest of his draft class and rose all the way to 3rd overall to Los Angeles in the recent SHL draft, this rookie averaged 18.5 minutes a night and showed tremendous growth over the season. Los Angeles got a great player, but we get to keep him around for the next few seasons!

The winner of the Dash-Sondergard award is …
Continuing a tradition of Timber 18oa draft success, Sean Gatez!
@SewingWithNancy

Esa Parmborg (@Steelhead77). Award for the top forward. By far the closest win for any award since we have instituted the seasonal awards. All 3 nominees have separated themselves from the rest of the field, and only 3 points separated 1st place from 3rd place in our voting.

Kyle Sutton - Last season's winner and finishing off his final season in the SMJHL. Tied this season for the lead for goals, Sutton continued to produce at a leading pace and is looking for carry forward his solid play in the SHL this season. We’ll definitely be missing his hot stick on the ice for the Timber, but know that he will fit in well with the professional roster that Edmonton has put together.

Walton Stromberg - Stromberg really came into his own this season. Leading the team with 39 points, Stromberg developed into one of the best offensive centers in the league. Constantly winning key faceoffs, he wasn’t one to shy away from putting the puck on net, and played a big part of Maine’s revamped powerplay.

Alex Marshall - Marshall quietly put up points for the Timber in true to his form. He was second on the team in points and averaged over 2 minutes less powerplay time per game than some of his fellow high scoring forwards in Stromberg and Sutton. Not one to shy down from a fight when challenged, and ready to throw a big hit to strip the puck, Marshall was able to blend aggression, physicality and a scoring touch to great success

The winner of the Esa Parmborg award is …
Throwing hits and clapping bombs, I’m happy to announce Monarchs Rookie Alex Marshall takes this one by a sliver!
@DonutDefender

The final award that was voted on by the team members is the top defender award. Dominic Montgomery (@bilbo). This takes into account excellence on the defensive side of the puck, prowess in the offensive zone, and ability to stop opponents in their tracks.

Rikard Bjerg - Bjerg put together one of the best defensive campaigns in the league last season. Nominated for the top Defensive Defender in the SMJHL as I mentioned earlier, Bjerg managed to blend hits, shot blocks, even faceoffs for some reason as well as pretty good offensive numbers. A mainstay on the penalty kill, Bjerg was always up to the task of shutting down the opponent's top players.

Adrik Baranov  - Our high flying speedster defender was unfortunately snakebitten for goals this season. But his particular brand of offense meant that while his goals may have been down, there were plenty of rebounds for our forwards to pounce on. With 144 shots and a sub 3% shooting, I can only imagine the stats if he’s able to shake that up and bring the shooting to even league average. This next season is going to be very exciting to watch Baranov perform.

Nathan Thomas - Thomas has been a slow riser among the team and he’s finally there. Extremely well rounded, he’s a defender who does it all. Leading all defensemen on the team in plus minus, PIMS and Fights taken and won, he’s ready to help stand up for teammates, and he’s extremely defensively responsible. He’s down for one more season, and the league is sure to take note of his solid performance day in and day out.

The winner of the Dominic Montgomery award is …
Our shutdown specialist extraordinaire,  Rikard Bjerg!
@AgentSmith630

Now onto the final award for the day, The Timber Most Valuable Player. Now I’m not going to beat around the bush, Leo Bloomfield has won this award the last 3 seasons, but this season we are headed in a new direction. Bloomey you are at the heart of the team, you are the best goalie we’ve ever had, and in a league that keeps sleeping on you, I know you’ll shove your success in their face. Back in the S53 SMJHL Draft Maine called out a goalie’s name at number 19, the 5th goalie taken in the draft and the critics pounced. Well I’m here to say I’d make that call time and time again, that ever since your first draft the ‘experts’ and talking heads overlooked your value, and I’m happy to see you continuously shutting all the critics' mouths with your presence in the Locker Room, and on the ice. For this reason, we’re happy to dust off the Alexander Roach award @Faelax, we had to travel to Quebec to wrestle it back from Flex, but luckily we caught him sleeping. To reiterate, this is awarded to the person who has shown extreme dedication to the team, and goes above and beyond the call of duty. Come get your hardware Bloomey! @BloomeyGB

Now then back to the regularly scheduled programming, the Timber MVP. This season we had one player in particular stand out as both a dominating performance on the ice through the season, as well as an amazing help in the locker room, making sure we get all the rookies some top notch signatures, and he’s one of the best graphics artists around.
Walton Stromberg is our Season 56 Maine Timber Most Valuable Player!
