They say if you want to be the best you have to beat the best and at the end of this regular season the Kelowna Knights find themselves sitting at the top of the standings with an impressive record of 49 – 13 – 4 for a total of 102 points. It will be no surprise that when you take a look at the Knights numbers they finished with the highest goal differential with a staggering +118, scoring a league high 275 goals and only letting in 157 goal, the only team with less goals allowed being the Newfoundland Berserkers with 151.
Despite scoring the most goals in the league only two of their players can be found in the top 10 goal scorers. What this tells you is that there is no key player that is carrying the Knights to victory, instead it is a team effort. When you look down Kelowna’s roster you find that 6 of their players have scored at least 20 goals and even more amazingly that every defenseman that has played all 66 regular season games has at least 10 goals! Another statistic that will turn every other team’s GM green envy is the +/-, 10 of the top 15 players in the +/- category are from the Knights…. 10…out of 15…how?! This is a team where every player is contributing and that is a very scary thing for any team that gets in their way. Standout contributions come from Kelowna point leader, center Cian McFelter who has tallied up 26 goals and an astounding 42 assists which sees him tied for second in the league with 62 points. Another player to take note of might is defenseman Grandmaster Funk who may be one of the key reasons the Knights have such a fantastic goal differential. This glutton for punishment has recorded not just a Kelowna high but a league high 170 blocked shots! To put that in perspective right winger Chad Danger is second for Kelowna with an admirable 61 blocks. You can’t talk about why a team is successful without looking at the most important role on the ice. Benjamin Blue-II has shouldered the time between the pipes for the Knights. Benjamin has the second best record in the league for net minders at 32 – 6 – 3 and the second best goals against average for goalies who have played in 40 or more games with a record of 2.35. The Kelowna Knights are a well disciplined team who play a tight game at both ends of the ice. They are continuing this great form from last season where they also finished at the top of the standings through the regular season… with a suspiciously identical goal differential. For those of you lucky enough to have earned a spot in the playoffs this year go study the tapes, run your drills one extra time and make sure you are ready to give 110% because at some point you are going to come across the powerhouse that is the Kelowna Knights. Approved! +5 TPE @Evil_AllBran |
