S59 IIHF Day 4 Recap
(995 words, ready for grading)

Day 4 of the S59 IIHF Round Robin continues with a new team on top of the leaderboard in Group A, and Team Switzerland still leading Group B. Team Great Britain dragged themselves into the elimination round contention with two games in hand, but Team Canada didn’t have a very good sim and really needs to shake things up. A few teams can still upset the apple cart as they have games in hand on the other teams, so the next couple of round robin days could prove crucial.

Here are the current standings after the second day of sims:

Team Latvia fell to Team Great Britain 7-2 with a penalty-filled first period resulting in a parade by both teams to the sin bin. Team Latvia showed a few signs of life in the second period, scoring two goals, but Team Great Britain would assert their dominance by racking up the score in the second and third periods.

JPN 7 - IRL 4

Team Ireland would jump out to an early lead in the first thanks to goals 24 seconds apart from Patrik Money and Bas O’ Bigbers, but second period goals from Akira Ren and Rintarou Okabe (a shorthanded goal!) would kickstart the Japanese offense. Austin Roenick and Patrick Shepherd would add to the Irish totals, but the Japanese response was swift and overwhelming in the third period.

GER 4 (SO) - CAN 3

A tough shootout loss for Team Canada as Team Germany beat them in the extra round off a goal from Steve Harrington. Both teams traded goals in each period, leading to a stalemate that needed the shootout to resolve. Jack Kanoff was dynamic on the night, wreaking havoc on the Canadian defense, alongside Steve Harrington. Hugh Jazz nabbed a goal and an assist, a bright spot in an otherwise grinding game.

RUS 2 - LTV 3

Team Latvia achieved their first win with a tough shootout battle against Team Russia, Kata Vilde turning away 42 out of 44 shots as they held off the Russian assault. A series of unfortunate penalties in the second would provide the Latvians with the opportunity to score, and a goal from Asclepius Perseus Flitterwind made it seem like victory was within reach. Team Russia would score two power play goals late in the third however, as Kriss Darzins would see himself off for a misconduct, and the overtime period did not solve anything. Kata Vilde was perfect in the shootout, and Kaspars Claude and Mats Marner would put the game away on two consecutive shootout goals.

FIN 5 - NOR 1

Team Finland had a big win over Team Norway, with White Goodman only allowing one goal on 34 shots, and Bjorn Leppanen having a four point game. Defender Jukka Timonen also had a terrific game with 3 assists on the night, setting up the plays in the first period and second to extend the Finnish lead. Eko Van Otter had a rare display of temper, and was penalized five minutes for an illegal check to the head.

SWI 3 - CZE 1

Team Switzerland continued their dominance of Group B with a strong showing, limiting the Czech to a goal in the third period. Markus Tegernako was solid in net for the Swiss, but their lack of offence was their downfall as they could not muster much.

SWE 1 - CAN 0

A perfect game from A Jobin sealed the deal as Team Canada was blanked by Team Sweden. An uncharacteristic penalty-filled game for Team Canada, as Lyle Odelein III was hit with a charging penalty and a 10-minute misconduct after some heated words were exchanged, and Jean-Paul Boivin and Oliver Cleary also saw themselves penalized for their behaviour. Reid Sutherland would score the game winner on a rebound from a point drive as there was a scramble in the net front.

RUS 2 - USA 3

Bobby Sharp and Bobby Lane continue to dominate the score sheets as the two Team USA players were instrumental in beating Team Russia. Bobby Lane equalized the score in the second period, and Bobby Sharp would provide the game winner in the third.

FIN 2 - IRL 3

Team Ireland got their second win in the tournament as Elizabeth Doyle turned away a flurry of Finnish shots. Zoltan Topalo had a goal in the third period, but the Finns could not find an equalizing goal even with the extra attacker as Doyle turned away every shot.

CZE 4 - AUT 3

Team Austria came oh so very close to a win as they took Team Czechia to the brink in a shootout. Three Czech goals early in the game made it seem as though it was predetermined from the start, but a heroic effort by Austria saw Mikael Choybuk equalize at 16:46 in the third period. Michael Scarn had the only goal in the shootout and the Austrians were unable to stay alive, ending the comeback.

USA 3 - CZE 0

Strom Chamberlain built a wall and made the Czech pay for it, as he turned away every Czech application for a visa into the net. Ethan Duncan opened the scoring late in the first for Team USA, Pojo Biscuit fought Ambacas Cuddles to a draw in the first period, and two goals late in the third for Team USA sealed the deal in the game.

IRL 0 - SWE 4

A Jobin had his second shutout in a row as he blanked Team Ireland. A series of three quick goals in the first seemed to sap the life out of Team Ireland, who did not muster much offence in the game after that. Magnus Liljestrom assisted on three goals, while Sven Svenson and Reid Sutherland had two points apiece, showing the strength of the Swedish S53 class.

Hope these short recaps help you guys keep up with IIHF action!
