(405 words, ready for grading) The Semi Finals games were everything that we expected out of them - tense, nail-biting tension as the teams battle to get the puck into the opposing end and past the goaltender. Team Japan continue to upset higher-seeded opponents as Olli Saarinen Jr. stands tall in net, and Team Czechia and Team Switzerland had a track meet that went to overtime in order to find a conclusion. JPN 2 - NOR 1 Team Norway came into this matchup as the highly favored highest seed remaining, but Team Japan’s Olli Saarinen Jr. stood tall against the potent offense that Team Norway boasted. Nicholas Owens tipped a point shot from Martijn Westbroek just 3 minutes into the first period, and then Parker Smeb added the game-winner in the second period on a pass from Daniel Smeb, blasting it past Cillian Kavanagh. Team Norway’s only goal came on an Adam Scianna breakaway in the third period, but they could not get another shot past Olli Saarinen Jr. in order to find the equalizing goal. Saarinen Jr. turned away 42 out of 43 shots sent his way by Team Norway, continuing a hot streak in the tournament. CZE 5 - SWI 4 Team Czechia and Team Switzerland needed overtime to settle this one, as both teams had a flurry of shots and goals. Slap McShotty opened the scoring for Team Switzerland just a minute and twenty-eight seconds in on the powerplay, only to be matched by Aron Hernadivic for Team Czechia six minutes later. This pattern would continue, with each team scoring goals in turn. In the second period FR Finn-Rhys scored for Team Switzerland, matched by Ruslan Zaporozhets for Team Czechia, and in the third period the teams scored two goals apiece - Luke Thomason and Michael Scarn for Czechia, and Mitchell van der Heidjen and Justin Keahi scored a minute apart very late in the third period with the goalie pulled to equalize the game. Overtime settled the game as Simon Takshak wristed a rocket past Nicolae Antonescu, sending Team Czechia to the finals to face Team Japan. When we come back on Sunday, we will have a brand new gold medal winner - one that has not won before! This is very exciting news, and shows that nations are getting stronger and closer to parity in IIHF even though they might not have the same talent pool all around. Thanks for reading!
