S60 IIHF Quarterfinals Recap
(558 words, ready for grading)

We just had the quarterfinals round today after a short break from the round robin, and what an exciting quartet of games we had today! There were a few unexpected results, with all but one of the lower seeded teams winning their matchups, and that just means that the next round - the semi-finals - will be even more interesting! Team Great Britain, who just made it over the cutoff to get into the elimination rounds, managed to advance to the semi-finals after ignominiously finishing out of the IIHF post-season last time, and look to prove that they still have the chops to get to the finals. Team Sweden looked stronger than ever as they easily dispatched Team Germany. Team Japan proved that their victory for the gold medal last season was no fluke, as they beat the group-leading Team Finland by a large margin, and Team Czechia defeated a resurgent Team Canada in a tight battle.

Here are the quarterfinal sims and the games involved:

Uk GBR 3 - NOR 2 :norway

This game provided late heartbreak to Team Norway as Rhys Pritchard would score seconds before time expired in the third period to break the tie, securing Great Britain’s win. It was a back-and-forth affair with both teams equal in most measures, taking turns creating offensive chances and denying them. The game got tighter and tighter defensively as it went on, and looked set to go to extra time, before a seeing-eye shot from Rhys Pritchard eluded Norwegian goaltender Cillian Kavanagh’s blocker.

Germany GER 1 - SWE 5 Sweden

The first two periods were all Team Sweden as they outshot Team Germany 13-5 and 14-4 in the first and second periods respectively, and the scoreboard reflected that as Team Sweden was leading 5-1 by the end of the second. Team Germany pushed back in the third, but were unable to find the back of the next thanks to an excellent defensive effort from the Swedish blueliners.

Japan JPN 8 - FIN 4 Finland

It looked like a fairly even game in the first period, but a series of costly mistakes in the second would sink Team Finland as Team Japan proved that their run last year was no fever dream. Finnish goaltender Harry Carpet had a game he’d rather forget, and Team Finland’s hopes would be dashed as they exit the post-season early. Parker Smeb had a hat-trick in the game as he was all over the ice offensively, and brother Daniel Smeb had three assists as he participated in every Parker Smeb goal.

Czechia CZE 2 - CAN 1 Canada

Team Canada looked like they were back to their old selves as they dominated the round robin like they did before, but would fall in this game to Team Czechia in a tight defensive battle. Both teams scored in the first period, but Team Czechia would add a goal in the second that would stand as the game-winner. Team Canada’s push in the third was stymied by unfortunate penalties that killed any momentum they generated, and would end in a 2-1 defeat.

Thanks for tuning in! We will be back Thursday with an exciting semi-final where Team Great Britain faces off against Team Sweden, and Team Czechia and Team Japan meet up again a round earlier than they did last year!
