The Newfoundland Berserkers have been the terror of the SMJHL almost instantly since they moved from Lethbridge in S52. Toping the Regular Season standings for the first time in S54, it took one more season until they earned their first Four Star Cup with a 6 game series against the Maine Timber in S55. Since then, they’ve won the Four Star Cup 4 separate additional times and have reached the finals 7 times, 6 of them in a row since S60. In a league that has a natural rollercoaster rebuilding cycle that is beyond impressive, it’s simply inhuman.
In the last 5 seasons combined, the Berserkers have a league best 519 points, almost 100 more than the next closest team – the Colorado Raptors. That translate to an insane 251-62-17 record in the regular season. Has the SMJHL seen its greatest Dynasty ever in the past decade? Impressive Contributors Rand al’Thor @HabsFanFromOntario had one of the most impressive seasons a defenseman has ever had in this league last season. With 76 points he lead the charge for the team while putting in an average of over 23 minutes a night. Add in the fact al’Thor had 64 points in S64, and 70 points in S63, he’ll likely go down as one of the all time great puck moving defenseman in the SMJHL. Alexander Mackenzie @DrB1gMack lit the lamp during his final two seasons in the league. Coming close to a 40 goal season, Mackenzie put up 76 points in S64 and an even better total of 89 in S63 as the Berserkers sat high and mighty on the SMJHL throne winning the Four Star Cup in both of those seasons. Even a sophomore campaign of 59 points from Mackenzie helped them win in S62 as well. Centerman Robert Black @grimreaper was another recent contributor to the dominance of Newfoundland. With 71 points in S60 and 81 in S61, Black was the key man for this franchise. It truly is a shame that Black lifted the cup only once with the team in S60. New Additions Newfoundland entered the draft with their first round pick at 13 overall, their original second rounder, and an additional second rounder via Colorado. They moved their third and fourth round pick, but did manage to get back a fourth rounder. Overall, decent amount of picks available to help bolster the team, with three of them coming in prime spot to pick a falling prospect. With their first round selection there was no surprise as Ramsus Bergling @JNH was taken to help solidify their defensive core. An athletic force on the blueline, Bergling can move the puck and lead a breakout. Solid selection that will surely enjoy every second on the Island. The Berserkers selected Brennan Kennedy III @bk1689 at 24th overall. This winger has speed and a deadly shot from the wing. He’ll be able to put up points for this team in a hurry. Two picks later at 26th overall, Pope Coswi Jr @Coswi was selected. The American Centerman who can’t win a draw will have a lot of work to do in that department, but the fact he’s so offensively gifted probably makes up for that fact. After all, who cares about the faceoff? It’s all about the puck going in the net. In the fourth round Louis Perreault @Wind Savon was the man taken, followed by Nate Dogg @Nate_l_dogg and Ryanko Witunkey @Porky Platypus in the fifth. Last but not least for this crop of rookies was Joseph Milone Jr @Jmilone . Not much is known about these prospects, so we’ll wait and watch them come pre-season and early season games. Is there a potential steal of the draft among them? Redemption Time? S66 is upon us, and the question for Berserkers fans is simple. Can they get back to the Four Star Cup final for the seventh time in a row? Although the Detroit Falcons, who dominated the regular season, were the eventual winners last season there is still a bitter after taste when fans think back. Up 3 games to 1, Detroit came back in 3 straight elimination games to clinch the title in dramatic fashion. Was that the end of the Newfoundland Dynasty, or just another bump in the road as they seek Four Star Cup glory? Either way it’ll be an exciting season to watch! Code: Words: 733 |
