SHL prospect Pool Rankings (Season 72)
#1
(This post was last modified: 08-24-2023, 06:20 PM by Atox.)

[Ready for Grading]

Update: I never found the motivation to complete the media I said I would about the prospect pools during Season 72, and I don't archive the rankings for each week which I probably should.  This will be similar to Part 2 of my initial Prospect Pool Rankings in ranking each team's prospect pool by score and the greater context of the team's current position.  If you never read this it can be found here.  I also wrote an update back in June about how my formula has changed, which can be found here.

[Note: Scores, rankings, and other information are from the week of August 14, 2023 unless specified otherwise]

#20 : Patriotes Montreal Patriotes - 0 Score
Season 70 Score: 0 (T-Last)
Season 71 Score: 0 (T-Last)
Season 72 Score: 0 (T-Last
Top 30 Prospects: None
In my previous article, Montreal was ranked 19th and only had one prospect in Damien Hirano.  He is currently the youngest player on Montreal's roster.  Most of the Patriotes roster is old with only two players that will not face regression at the end of Season 72, Damien being one of them.  Granted, these players are all rich in TPE with Brick Wall sitting at 1954 TPE and Mads McBride over 2000, so it isn't a problem yet.  Montreal hopes to not get swept by Buffalo again or to waste the next few seasons because there is not going be any help coming.

#19: Renegades Texas Renegades - 346.88 Score
Season 70 Score: 0 (T-Last)
Season 71 Score: 120.81 (15th)
Season 72 Score: 226.06 (13th)
Top 30 Prospects: None
Texas has dragged themselves out of the muck and have a roster of young and interesting talent.  Ten of their players come from Season 67 or later, with four of them over 1000 TPE and a few more over 900 TPE.  Unlike Montreal, Texas isn't on as much of a ticking clock in terms of producing.

#18: Argonauts Seattle Argonauts - 411.57 Score
Season 70 Score: 0 (T-Last)
Season 71 Score: 0 (T-Last)
Season 72 Score: 411.57 (9th)
Top 30 Prospects: None
Seattle fell of the cliff hard after their window of contention.  In Season 70 they were third in the league and look unstoppable.  Right now they are trying to avoid missing the playoffs.  They only have one player that is active and not facing regression at the end of the season in Benson Fiorentini.  In terms of prospects, Seattle has a few interesting pieces in Season 72 prospects Sith Happens and Parast, but neither are in the top 30 and even if they were two prospects won't be the cure to an aging roster.  Most will say it was worth it due to their Challenge Cup wins at least.

#17: Inferno Atlanta Inferno - 444.27 Score
Season 70 Score: 122.10 (13th)
Season 71 Score: 119.97 (16th)
Season 72 Score: 202.20 (14th)
Top 30 Prospects: None
For Atlanta, the bottom hasn't fully fallen out from them as they are still a competitive team., however if the season were to end as of writing [August 17], they would match the lowest ranked season they've had since Season 65.  The problem is that the prospect pool is lacking.  They do have a handful of players, but none of them earn at a consistent enough pace to considered high earning.  The Inferno at least have young pieces on their main roster in Billy Herrington and John Hopoate from Season 69, the former being over 1000 TPE.

#16: syndicate Chicago Syndicate - 527.71 Score
Season 70 Score - 0 (T-Last)
Season 71 Score - 183.06 (12th)
Season 72 Score - 344.65 (11th)
Top 30 Prospects: None
Chicago's dominance for the past decade continues as they sit 2nd in the SHL in points at time of writing, and have finished below 10th only once in the past ten seasons.  On the main roster they have a few young pieces that are interesting in Soderberg-Tremblay and Rasmus Bergling but beyond that the Syndicate roster is regressing or inactive for the most part.  Their best prospect is currently Alexandros Mograine who will likely hit 400 TPE before the end of the regular season, but is not a top earning prospect.

#15: Aurora Winnipeg Aurora - 877.97 Score
Season 70 Score - 703.21 (3rd)
Season 71 Score - 0 (T-Last)
Season 72 Score - 174.76 (15th)
Top 30 Prospects: James Ward-Prowse (S70, 14th), Sydney Shaw (S70, 20th)
Pray to god that this doesn't become the fifth consecutive season where Winnipeg loses in the Challenge Cup Finals.  You have a few young players earning highly in Paul Peterson and Lord Farquaads and only one inactive rostered player (Kaap Kampainen who is still 1299 TPE), but this roster obviously can't stay as dominant as they have been forever.  Even with two Top 30 prospects that can be used as reinforcement it could start to feel desperate in Manitoba.  If this team comes up short again they will likely end up in the same reputation as the 1990's Buffalo Bills or 1970's Minnesota Vikings.

#14: Wolfpack New England Wolfpack - 982.73 Score
Season 70 Score - 0 (T-Last)
Season 71 Score - 515.62 (9th)
Season 72 Score - 467.11 (8th)
Top 30 Prospects: None
Had this been done some time during Season 71, New England would likely have a couple Top 30 prospects and been much higher in terms of score as they boast two Season 69 skaters over 1000 TPE in Antoine Beauregard and Pork Tenderloin.  Without them, their prospect pool is much more mediocre, with their best prospect being Adelbert Steiner, who was about 20 TPE off from being in the Top 30.  The other couple prospects under contract are respectable but much further away from the Top 30.  This is all a bonus for New England however as their roster is currently peaking now and have several seasons of reasonable title contention without any significant new blood injected.  Them leading the league in points indicates as such.

#13: Blizzard Edmonton Blizzard - 1049.07 Score
Season 70 Score - 379.41 (7th)
Season 71 Score - 669.66 (8th)
Season 72 Score - 0 (T-Last)
Top 30 Prospects: Furious Chicken (S71, 6th), Alvin Wong (S70, 7th)
Edmonton has built a roster with the next 3-5 seasons being their peak without significant alterations to their roster.  Twelve of their players on roster are from Seasons 64-66, and Edmonton sits at 3rd in the league.  Even better, having two Top 10 prospects will help extend this window as the older parts of the roster begin to regress more and more.  They have a third prospect that sits at 44th as well and could become a key player should they continue to earn.  With a much weaker Pacific for the next few seasons, the Blizzard should look to capitalize on this.

#12: Stampede Buffalo Stampede - 1082.59 Score
Season 70 Score - 347.82 (8th)
Season 71 Score - 377.85 (11th)
Season 72 Score - 356.93 (10th)
Top 30 Prospects: Daniel Grumathan (S70, 17th), Shootin Blanks (S71, 22nd)
Buffalo shot up like a rocket between Season 70 and Season 71, winning the Challenge Cup last season.  The concerning thing for the rest of the league is that this team will likely be getting even better as we progress through the next few seasons, as they have a glut of young talent from Seasons 66-68.  Their top two prospects sitting in the lower half of the Top 30 could spell an even longer reign as a top team in the SHL.

#11: Specters New Orleans Specters - 1095.29 Score
Season 70 Score - 283.85 (11th)
Season 71 Score - 0 (T-Last)
Season 72 Score - 811.44 (5th)
Top 30 Prospects:  Bernard Lodge (S72, 30th)
New Orleans fell off a cliff going from middle of the pack to currently a lottery team.  My best guess was trading Connor O'Byrne but otherwise I can't get a read as to what roster moves they did between Season 71 and 72.  They have a good core being built in a chunk of their current roster being from Seasons 67-69, along with the prospects they currently have in house.  Bernard Lodge looks like the heir apparent to an aging Jon St. Ark, and Konig Wolf is only 10 TPE behind Lodge who sits right at the cut-off for the Top 30.

#10: Panthers Los Angeles Panthers - 1163.70 Score
Season 70 Score - 312.53 (9th)
Season 71 Score - 851.17 (4th)
Season 72 Score - 0 (T-Last)
Top 30 Prospects: Oliver Castillon (S71, 9th), Andren Akerson (S71, 23rd), Luka Nogoalov (S70, 27th)
Los Angeles currently sits in a holding pattern as the roster ages into their peak seasons.  Currently sitting in the middle of the league's standings at 11th and just below even in goal differential.  Over half the roster is from Season 67 or later, as well as having only four players subject to regression. Castillion is as advertised when LA picked him with a lottery selection, as well as Luka Nogoalov who sits as a great 1-2 punch with Grzegorz for the Panthers' goalie tandem.

#9: Steelhawks Hamilton Steelhawks - 1258.45 Score
Season 70 Score - 306.50 (10th)
Season 71 Score - 359.85 (12th)
Season 72 Score - 592.10 (6th)
Top 30 Prospects: Zedward Zilliams (S72, 26th), Iliket Urtles (S70, 29th)
Hamilton is a team still trying to pull themselves out of the much and turn into championship contenders.  They have a solid foundation at this point in time with a handful of players over 1500 TPE along with high earning young roster players, but will need more support to break out.  Luckily they have a solid pieces in the pipeline with Zed and Urtles, both Top 30 prospects, along with Trevor Lahey; a Season 72 prospect who's hit the 400 TPE milestone.

#8: Forge Philadelphia Forge - 1264.83 Score
Season 70 Score - 752.11 (2nd)
Season 71 Score - 512.72 (10th)
Season 72 Score - 0 (T-Last)
Top 30 Prospects: Tony Soprano (S70, 2nd), Gnabe Dabson (S70, 18th)
Very nice that a team that has made the Conference Finals for the past three consecutive seasons also has a very good prospect pool.  This pool is very clearly anchored by Tony Soprano who as of August 14, sits 1 TPE behind Tibuk Soonika; the highest rated prospect under my formula.  Him and Dabson will help the Forge extend this window of contention as the older pieces of their roster fall further into regression, such as Blouin or AllBran.

#7: Dragons Calgary Dragons - 1391.51 Score
Season 70 Score - 0 (T-Last)
Season 71 Score - 131.17 (14th)
Season 72 Score - 1260.34 (2nd)
Top 30 Prospects: None
Calgary pushed a complete nuke on their roster after Season 70, seeing as how they fell from 7th to 18th from Season 70 to 71, and sit at 15th in Season 72 as of August 23.  Their roster shows as such as the Dragons only have six players on roster that are active, and four of those inactive players are under 500 TPE.  The concerning part is that the Dragons' prospect pool are made mostly of Season 72 players, and a few of them are earning very slowly.  Their best prospects sit currently as Sven Holmberg, Arthur Kaliyev, and Scott Seitz, all over 380 TPE.  Tanner and Sunrise are over 350 TPE as well.  While ranked highly, we still need to wait and see if Calgary's prospects hold up over the next few seasons.

#6: Platoon Baltimore Platoon - 1511.96 Score
Season 70 Score - 150.76 (13th)
Season 71 Score - 1361.19 (2nd)
Season 72 Score - 0 (T-Last)
Top 30 Prospects: Thomas Liebold (S71, 8th), Jay Bryzi (S71, 19th)
Baltimore looks to be another team in a holding pattern as they look for their prospects and main roster age into their peak seasons, with nine players on their roster from Season 66 and later.  This includes a whopping five from Season 68.  Liebold and Bryzi sit as their best pair of prospects, but also Bellamy Blake who sits at 31st.  30th and 32 are both Season 72 draftees and they are separated by a difference of 2 TPE, so Blake shouldn't be counted as just ok.

#5: Monarchs Minnesota Monarchs - 1890.60 Score
Season 70 Score - 669.31 (5th)
Season 71 Score - 676.30 (7th)
Season 72 Score - 544.99 (7th)
Top 30 Prospects: Elena Maximova (S70, 13th), Lasse Zeigler (S70, 28th)
I've been here for only about a year so I don't have much context for much of the league's history, as well as focusing mainly on the SMJHL until last season when I was called up.  I say this because during the process of writing this I discover the at least twenty season long stretch of futility where Minnesota's best season was them going 30-30-6.  Hopefully this current iteration changes this fact as they have probably the youngest team in the SHL with only one player who's faced regression.  Their top prospects in Maximova, Zeigler, and Gato (the aforementioned 32nd place prospect I talked about in Baltimore's paragraph) help as reinforcement to this core.

#4: pride San Francisco Pride - 2223.15 Score
Season 70 Score - 558.59 (6th)
Season 71 Score - 1384.03 (1st)
Season 72 Score - 280.53 (12th)
Top 30 Prospects: Willow Soderberg-Snooks (S70, 4th), Logan Webb (S71, 10th), Mercedes Bayle (S71, 12th), Levin Schattenaxt (S71, 16th)
We are in Year 5 of the San Francisco rebuild, which still needs some big pieces to shake out well.  Most of their Season 68 draft bounty hasn't panned out save for Toasty and Hargreeves, with the latter three (Sugars, Sobchak, and Garza) all below 900 TPE as of August 21.  Luckily the pipeline as it stands looks to be great reinforcement for the Pride and should serve as great additions should they continue to progress at their current rate.  San Francisco lays claim to the most Top 30 prospects in the league at four, with two more prospects within reach (Dominik Winters is about 10 TPE away from 31st place Blake, and Rowan O'Berine is 11 TPE away from 30th place Lodge).

#3: Barracuda Tampa Bay Barracuda - 2476.97 Score
Season 70 Score - 700.05 (4th)
Season 71 Score - 748.89 (6th)
Season 72 Score - 1028.03 (4th)
Top 30 Prospects: Tibuk Soonika (S70, 1st), Max Carnage (S71, 11th), The Murray (S72, 24th)
The Tampa Bay roster as it stands are mostly placeholders, waiting for the rich prospect pool they have (as well as future draft capital) to progress to SHL caliber players.  Having seven inactive players on roster, as well as eight players that will regress after this season is indicative of such.  Tibuk Soonika is the highest rated prospect under my system and will be a great injection to a goalie tandem made of two inactive players under 350 TPE.  Max Carnage and The Murray round out their Top 30, along with Mit Wobet, Dan Craig, and Filip Svatos as further reinforcement.

#2: Rage Manhattan Rage - 2557.23 Score
Season 70 Score - 171.79 (12th)
Season 71 Score - 863.27 (3rd)
Season 72 Score - 1522.16 (1st)
Top 30 Prospects: Alexej Kastrba (S71, 16th), Austin Morley (S72, 25th)
Footage of Manhattan Rage arriving to play hockey.  There are a grand total of four players on this roster that are active, and two that are over 1000 TPE.  This is a rebuild that will take the better part of the 70's to complete unless every player drafted after this point becomes max earners.  The Rage currently have good pieces that they will build around in the coming years in Kastrba and Austin Morley (one of two Season 72 prospects in the Top 30.)  Along with those two, Manhattan has another two S72 prospects over 400 TPE, and another two over 360 TPE.

#1: Stars Toronto North Stars - 3602.23 Score
Season 70 Score - 1559.40 (1st)
Season 71 Score - 836.68 (5th)
Season 72 Score - 1206.14 (3rd)
Top 30 Prospects: Rhett Carpet (S70, 3rd), Ace Lightning (S70, 5th), Jonny FourStar (S71, 21st)
The Toronto North Stars roster is like Mahnattan's but much less aggressive, mainly because their absolute dumpstering was in Season 70 and some of the prospects they had then have graduated to the main SHL roster.  The Stars have also collected prospects like candy at 15.  These include Rhett Carpet and Ace Lightning who sit in the Top 5 prospects, Johnny FourStar who's their 3rd Top 30 prospects, and borderlines in Nathan Cormier, Billy Hill, Westley Kirkpatrick, Aumy Junior II, and Remington Richardson III.  If most of these prospects hit and progress as they have the North Stars will be a reckoning force in a few seasons.

Great article. always enjoy reading them. Obviously formulas take some nuance out of it, maybe slide a franchise up or down a spot. but other wise pretty spot on.

My bias would have us higher but this is a great piece! Your evaluation of the Calgary timeline is pretty much spot-on, blew it up after S70 but wasn't accumulating draft capital until this past draft which is why it was a little delayed.
