It was an up and down season for Anchorage this year. Boasting a 31-34-1 record in the regular season the Armada were just able to sneak into the playoffs as the ninth seed, before ultimately falling in seven games to the Yukon Malamutes in the first round. There were some bright spots throughout the season, some things that could use some work, and immediate needs that should be addressed in this upcoming offseason. To start, the highs this season came in the form of reigning MVP Tony Soprano. The star forward and heartbeat of an offense that struggled to score at times did not have that issue himself, potting 43 goals and 47 assists for a whopping 90 points in 66 games to lead the team. Fellow third season forward Daniel Grumathan was third on the team with 23 goals and 48 assists for a total of 71 points. While these two were key pieces to any success that Anchorage found this season, both are aging out of the SMJHL and are leaving behind big shoes to fill. Barg Hazbite and Joseph Reed both were second and fourth respectively in team scoring and look primed to step up and take the reins, but there are question marks after that. Rookies Sim Wen and Bongo put together nice season totals, but they played as the wingers with Soprano between them. A majority of their points came from assists on goals that he scored, so their numbers might take a hit going into next season. Not to mention Wen was playing out of position this season, so he may find himself moved back to his natural position on the blueline for the next year. Ubba Lodbrok was the other rookie forward this year, and he will improve on his 42 point campaign. Goals will surely come for the Armada, it’s just a matter of where they come from and whether they can match or even improve on last season.

On the other hand, Anchorage found themselves giving up a ton of goals against. Their two goalies split games almost evenly between them and neither one really did all that much. Both rocked a GAA of over 4 and a save percentage under .900. +/- is notably not a great indication of anything in the grand scheme of stats but only three players were plus over the season, and one was DFA pickup Paul Bondage who played 7 games. The Armada need to tighten up their defensive play next season, and should consider adding a new goalie through the draft if they want to seriously compete with the upper echelon of teams. They’ve got the personal to succeed on the blueline, especially with players such as Dan Johnston, Cheeks Klapanen, and rookie Jean-François Bokassa continuing to improve, so they likely will not need to add anyone there. We all know how FHM can be, so maybe everything clicks next season after an offseason worth of improvement for the team without any major changes. No matter what happens, the crop of rookies from this season, and the ones added for next should play a big part in future success for Anchorage.
