S74 Rookie Skater Mid-Season Review
Stats are current as of Oct 15, 2023

It’s halfway through the S74 SMJHL season and we are here to take a look at the rookie class of S74 and see how they are doing! There are quite a few notables that have jumped out to take the lead and it is something that we should be keeping an eye on as we approach the second half of the season. Awards committee people should be paying close attention as they look to award the Esa Anrikannen trophy for the best rookie of the year in the SMJHL during the closing ceremonies.

First up we have the undisputed leading scorer so far of the S74 cohort with Celeste Desjardins, playing for the Quebec City Citadelles. Not only do they lead the rookie class in scoring for both points and goals, they are also the current leading scorer of the entire league! Holding down the left wing position on a line loaded with talent, Desjardins has made the most out of the ice time, amassing 24 goals and 24 assists for a total of 48 points through 33 games. Notable mentions for other Quebec City rookies are Froya and Sonja Solberg who both have 29 points on the second line with fellow rookie Shawn Pawn.

Second in the rookie scoring race is Shadow Fenix, who plays for the Colorado Raptors. He has 40 points (15 goals, 25 assists) through 34 games, but what also stands out is his 34 penalty minutes. Playing first line center duties for the Raptors means that he gets to face tough opposition, and the rookie center is still learning how to cope with checking the opposite player without getting called for an infraction. He is showing immense talent and will be someone to watch out for in the SHL as he continues to mature.

Sitting another eight points back in third place, Deep Thought plays for a deep (pun intended) Anchorage team which has probably limited his opportunities for ice time quite a bit. Still, he has 32 points (10 goals and 22 assists) which is very close to amassing a point per game. Deep Thought also sees quite a lot of power play time, as close to half of his points have come from the special teams assignment. The previous two players mentioned are also on the power play, but have relied on that less for gathering their goals and assists. Other notable mentions for Anchorage include Lucki Blackwood and Fedot Fedorov who are nipping at Deep Thought’s heels with 29 points.

These three have a clear lead over the rest of their cohort in terms of impact on the scoresheet, and are definitely contenders to keep an eye out for in the coming years. Awards committees will be frequently discussing their names, I am sure, and so will teams as they seek to contain them.

Some other fun facts from the data that I have gathered:
  • GM’s Son has 3 shorthanded goals and 2 shorthanded assists for 5 points total
  • Bog Damsel has 63 penalty minutes, 3 fights (2 wins 1 loss) but only 42 hits.
  • Benny Hana and Deep Thought both have 100 hits – that’s 3.3 hits per game!
  • Shadow Fenix has been the most generous with 47 giveaways
  • Oranj Konhe ties with Johnny Patey V2 with 37 takeaways
  • Newton Campbell has 80 shots blocked so far, with John Peanut at 79
  • Sabage Cabage the shooting machine with 122 shots on goal
