Round Robin:
Group A 1. Sweden Record: 10-0-2-0 for 30 Points Sweden's fantastic group stage performance was highlighted by their offensive capabilities with fantastic defensive support. Lias Ekholm-Gunnarsson led the Swedes with 22 points in 12 games. Hungry for the back to back championships, the Swedes moved on to face their Nordic rival in Finland in the first round 2. United States Record: 9-0-3-0 for 27 Points The United States were not as high flying on offense as the Swedish, but their fantastic goaltending and defense led to them taking second in the group as Justin Time recorded a Save Percentage of .945 and Casey Fantobens had a .921. This led to the US keeping pace in goal differential with the Swedes, but reliant on depth scoring. The US moved on to face Switzerland. 3. Switzerland Record: 7-0-5-0 for 21 Points The Swiss found their stride this tournament thanks to efforts of Meta Knight as well as Emil Egli. The Swiss found ways to win games and win them in the trenches with depth scoring and offensive defenders. While Rebecca Montagne recorded a save percentage of .899, her results speak for themselves as the team seemingly rallied around her. 4. Finland Record: 4-1-6-1 for 15 Points The Finnish scrapped in this very tough competition, just barely making it to the Quarterfinals. Their goalie tandem played great down the stretch and William Tree recorded a PDO of 109. With the Swedes coming next, the Finns will need their top lines to match the high octane of the Swedish Superstars, but so far they have been putting up comparable numbers. The main concern is the Finnish defense. 5. Ireland Record: 4-0-7-1 for 13 Points In a massive fall from grace from their first overall in the round robin last season, the Irish will be going home Eirely. Mads McBride led the Irish in points, but the efforts of the Irish ended up coming up just short. 6. Latvia Record: 3-1-7-2 for 12 points The host nation for this tournament won’t have far to travel to watch the rest of the tournament from home. Latvia’s lack of depth scoring came back to bite them, but they were just a little over a win away from punching their ticket to the next round. With the successes of the UCORCAL team in the WJC being led by a lot of Latvian youths, the Latvians may see a surge in a few seasons. 7. Great Britain Record: 2-1-9-0 for 8 Points Nothing seemed to be going right for the British this tournament, most notably on defense. Still the British are starting to get some younger players coming in finally, so future tournaments could be better. Group B 1. Germany 10-0-2-0 for 30 Points Evan Winter led the entire IIHF in points this season with 23 and 14 of those were goals. However, they weren't the only German to hit the 20 point mark with Rikkert Biemans also hitting 20. The Germans tore through Group B and will now face Canada in the first round. 2. Norway 7-1-4-0 for 23 Points The in the very cramped pack of Group B, Norway can thank forward Grogu Mandosson and defender Phillipe-Eko Eel for their insane contributions to the team. With a rather young roster, Norway's 2nd place finish in the group is an amazing accomplishment and they will face the Japanese next. 3. Japan 7-0-5-0 for 21 Points The Japanese struggled with defense this tournament, but they had two fantastic goalies and plenty of scoring to make up for it. Their goalies averaged a save percentage of .920 as the Japanese found heroes in their depth. However, facing Norway will be no easy task, even with how close they are in the standings. 4. Canada 6-0-5-1 for 19 Points Canada inched in front of France for the last spot in the Quarterfinals with Jack St. Clair leading the charge with 21 points. Despite their age, Ben Jammin led the Canadian defenders with 13 points. Facing the Germans in the first round will be a tall order. 5. France Record: 6-0-6-0 for 18 points The French bow out of this tournament just one point shy of moving onto the quarterfinals. Their losses were never really dominated by any prevailing issue other than they were unable to take any of their losses to overtime which would have secured their advancement based on point differential. The French goalies combined for a save percentage over .905 and the top French lines put away plenty of pucks with 5 forwards averaging a 1+ point per game. 6. Independent Russia 2-1-9-0 for 8 points IR struggled with puck control this tournament and had a hard time converting their chances into points with a 7.1% powerplay. The Independent Russians will need to sort out some tactical changes in the offseason. 7. Czechia 2-0-9-1 for 7 Points Another team who struggled in tactics as the Czechs had a 69.2 kill rate on penalties and 43% faceoff win rate. However, the Czech team is noticeably young and likely to learn from the shortcomings in this tournament. Quarterfinals Canada 0 vs. Germany 4 The Germans dominated the Canadians with 38 shots to 26 and winning 2/3 of the faceoffs. Evan Winter opened the scoring near the middle of the first period and completed a hattrick by the third period, assisting the final nail for four points in the Canadian coffin as Rikkert Biemans scored. Red Kirkby had three assists while Olof Karsikko completed the shutout. Finland 4 vs. Sweden 3 (OT) In an instant classic, the Finns scored in the last 30 seconds of the third period to tie the game and then won in overtime with Bnana NWaffles being the OT hero. Outdoor Truck scored twice in this upset as the Swedes failed to advance to the medal round. Adelie de Pengu was the standout from the Swedish with 2 points on the night. Switzerland 3 vs. United States 2 (OT) That's right, there was a second overtime upset from Group A's side in the first round as the Swiss took down the United States. The American tendency to defensive play was on full display as the Swiss out shot them 38-24 and despite a late tying goal in the 3rd by Dusty Rhodes, Ivan Lacksamus buried the game winner in early overtime. For the US, this is a marketed step up from last season, but that will be a small consolation as the Swiss move on to face Finland next. Japan 1 vs. Norway 4 In continuing the parody, Group B had another near blowout win as the Norwegians scored 3 times int he first period, before the 10 minute mark (in one case, 26 seconds into the game). Grogu Mandosson led Norway with 2 goals while goalie Ally Mathieson saved 33 times, 20 in the second period as the Japanese made a surge. however, the Norwegian 48 shots were too much for the Japanese and Norway will move on to face Germany. Tune in for the medal round! WC: 1273 Shoutout TheOPSquid for the Sig
