At the time of this writing, we are just over one week into this season and teams in the J have played an average of 23 games. It’s still early, but we are potentially witnessing a historic offensive season by one Betzee Nickelback. Currently Betzee is leading the league in points at 40pts, goals at 23g as well as at shooting percentage with a percentage of 30.26%. In the history of the index which spans from Season 53 to the current season 75, only 1 player has finished the season leading the league in all 3 categories. Six seasons back in season 69, Cale Salad finished the season with 55 goals on 25.35% shooting and 106pts. No one else has finished the season leading all 3 categories although some have gotten close.
In season 71, Gritty McGritterson ended the season with 57 goals on 21.27% shooting and 95pts. That shooting percentage was good for 2nd place and points landed them in 10th. Season 67 saw Bnana NWaffles lead the league in both points and goals with 96pts and 47 goals on 22.71% shooting. That shooting percentage however was only good for 3rd place. The next closest season was in season 58 by Kynwyl Pearce playing for the Kelowna Knights who ended the season with 43 goals on 20.38% shooting and 65pts. While they lead the league in goals, shooting percentage was only good for 3rd place and points landed them at 2nd place in a year that didn’t seem to have a high point contributor. So, what sets Betzee’s current pace apart from all of these others including the season Cale Salad had when they finished first in all 3 categories? Betzee’s current goal and points pace would not only blow all others out of the water, as she is on pace for 120pts and 69 goals, but if she is able to hold her current shooting percentage, she will be the only player in the history of the index to finish above 30% shooting while leading the league in goals. Not only would these numbers be records for the J league, but Betzee is also closing in on records for the Kraken franchise. Current all time goals leader of the Carolina Kraken franchise is Timo Lambert who sits at 115 goals and power play points leader is Westley Kirkpatrick who ended their career at 83 power play points. Betzee is at 84 goals and 65 power play points in her Kraken career and if she finishes at the current pace of this season, she would end her career with the franchise at 130 goals and 105 power play points. Heading into this season it was going to take a historic run to get within shooting distance of both of these records and that is exactly what we are witnessing from Betzee. What is her secret this season? The only information she has been willing to give up is that she prefers pudding over jello. It’s not a direct answer to the question, but I think we can all hypothesize how this preference has impacted her season thus far. [S75] GP: 66 G: 2 A: 10 PTS: 12 +/-: -12 TA: 28 BLK: 125 HIT: 89
