SMJHL Expansion Draft Rules

It is with great pride that I get to bring everyone my first announcement as SMJHL Head Office, some rules about the upcoming expansion draft!
1. Protected and Exposed Players Each team will be allowed to protect: 6 Forwards, 3 Defensemen, and 1 Goaltender OR 9 Players 2. Expansion Draft Rules The two expansion teams will take turns drafting in a snake draft order for 10 rounds or 20 total picks. Each current team will lose (1) player from their roster to an expansion team. 6 teams will lose two players. If a team loses two players to the expansion draft, they will receive a compensatory pick in the S76 draft between the first and second rounds. The pick will correlate to the reverse standings, similar to normal draft rules for the second round and beyond. If a GM has a player in the SMJHL, they must take their player in the final round. If a Co-GM has a player in the SMJHL, they must be taken in the 2nd round of the expansion draft. During an expansion team’s pick, they may only choose to draft players from teams who have not yet lost two players to expansion, until 6 teams have lost two players. If both expansion GMs are from the same SMJHL team, that SMJHL team will only lose those two players. If a team has more than 2 GMs or Co-GMs selected, then Head Office will discuss the appropriate compensation. Once a team loses two players to expansion, their pool of players is removed from the rest of the expansion draft, and they cannot lose another player to the draft. After 6 teams have lost two players, all other SMJHL teams will be removed after they lose one player. 3. Draft Lotto Rules Expansion teams will receive the average number of balls between the non-playoff team with the least lottery balls and the playoff team with the most lottery balls. 4. S76 Draft Rules Expansion teams will draft 3rd and 4th overall, in the first round, unless they win the lottery. Still think 6/3/1 is kinda bonkers tbh. More picks for expansion teams is cool, but 6/3/1 means around half the teams in the league are almost entirely protected, so the quality of pick is pretty rough. Beyond that, it's going to hammer some teams and not even affect others. 16-17 user rosters over 4 seasons means 12 players on average per team after age outs, and even though this is a small class and most teams have 13-14 players there's a lot of teams unaffected by the expansion draft and some of us with fully active rosters are getting hosed. There's probably going to be 3 or 4 teams with two players taken before 6 teams are picked from at all.
