First of all, we want to start our State of the Union with a huge congratulations to those who were selected during the Expansion Draft process. While some of you have since returned to your original teams, you all began to lay the groundwork for the amazing things we can hope to expect from both Ottawa and San Diego. Those foundational members included: For the Ottawa Highlanders: joe biggs Newton "Lizard" Campbell Demir Bellona Abdi Smokes Joe Degen Florian Hascek Benji Hockiwi David Doughty Tanner Pitts Cob O'Corn And for the San Diego Tidal: Meo Vanbiesbrouck Noah Smith Brandon Gilleyes Æric Calland Klims Jevsejevs Daquavion Davis II Sergei Ivanov Future Considerations Caper Poirot Journey Man Additionally this season, SMJHL Head Office was able to bring about a large change to the SMJHL. We’ve mentioned earlier in other SOTUs that we were hoping to eliminate the SMJHL budget. Ultimately, J HO felt that having standard amounts for rookies made it easier for predictability, helped to reduce some of the barriers of entry for those looking to GM, and allowed J HO more flexibility in making sure new users get a solid starting amount for the league, and have a good foundation to begin work on. Drafted players will now gain a set $5M upon being drafted, with a reduced waiver pay dependent upon the week (now, those players who join later, won’t be so behind their peers in their contract amounts), and get to earn a bonus if they’re able to remain active throughout the season. We’ve also upped the amount for AFA and IFA contracts to more closely mirror their sent-down peers as well. We’ve also cleaned up and modified our rulebook to reflect these changes, make some language clearer, and make sure that the rule changes necessary for our expansion were all included. Those are the big picture pieces for the SMJHL at the moment. We’re excited about expansion, playoff changes, contract changes and more, and cannot wait for the season to begin in earnest.
