S78 Team TPE Analysis and Predictions
Hello SHL Friends! It is that time of year again where everyone is thinking about season predictions. In the past, I did a team analysis based solely on Team TPE, because I subscribe to the theory that how your team will do is largely based on the TPE strength. Things like player builds and roles, and coaching strategies and line combos do of course affect things, but I would argue to a lesser degree than just overall roster TPE. My predictions from seasons past largely held up, barring a couple teams finishing a position higher or lower than anticipated. There are other factors to consider, such as players who are active will improve as the season goes on, so teams with more active players could get better as we progress. But for a preseason look, this can give us a decent enough look at which teams will be favored as we await the puck to drop to get the new season started! Without further ado, let's have a look at: NORTHEAST DIVISION NEW ENGLAND WOLFPACK 1928 - 1832 - 1648 1620 - 1616 - 1331 1301 - 1278 - 1243 1903 - 1522 1314 - 1156 1129 - 1086 947 608 --Analysis-- Usually the Wolfpack slowplay everyone in the regular season then come out swinging in the playoffs. But this year the defending Challenge Cup champions won't catch anyone by surprise. Pretty much the best roster in this division from top to bottom should see them safely secure the title. Are they good enough to win the whole thing again? Why not! TORONTO NORTH STARS 1809 - 1676 - 1627 1363 - 1342 - 1281 1017 - 1009 - 1003 - 797 1931 - 1688 1524 - 1370 1343 - 1113 999 364 --Analysis-- With a top line you could call elite, the best defense in the division, and very good depth in the second and third lines, Toronto looks to take a step forward this season and challenge for the division lead. The only real glaring issue here is they seem to have 1 too many forwards on the roster ... perhaps it's part of a bold plan but more likely they will need to move someone to comply with roster rules. Nonetheless, expect the Stars to have a solid season. BUFFALO STAMPEDE 1905 - 1875 - 1419 1377 - 1165 - 1016 930 - 929 - 912 1786 - 1166 1028 - 980 940 - 931 835 405 --Analysis-- The Stampede have a handful of very good players, but no line that you would call truly elite. The second and third lines especially are significantly weaker than the top teams in the division. However, their best players are better than the best players of the weaker teams. Putting them kind of smack in the middle of this division. HAMILTON STEELHAWKS 1571 - 1556 - 1439 1419 - 1415 - 1351 1055 - 939 - 595 1607 - 1447 1345 - 1120 943 - 783 1344 370 --Analysis-- Pretty decent roster here overall, a couple spots of weakness on the 3rd line which could cost them some wins in a tough division, but the top 2 lines are strong if not elite. They have the top TPE goalie in the division but is that enough to propel them over teams with a more powerful top line? I'm gonna say no. MONTREAL PATRIOTES 1391 - 1356 - 1267 1171 - 1159 - 1107 1094 - 963 - 693 1185 - 1162 997 - 984 852 - 553 1020 562 --Analysis-- Like other teams coming out of a rebuild, the Patriotes have many reasons to be optimistic about the future, with the vast majority of their players S73 or younger. However, they are still a couple of seasons away from being able to throw out an elite top line. This season should see improved performances individually as well as amassing a few more wins but it would take some kind of miracle to make the playoffs. Next year, maybe.
