For a defenseman, Katchalov is actually decent on offense. He is an okay passer and can hold his own when in possession of the puck. Now, make no mistake, he is no powerplay quarterback and is certainly not a Mike Green or Shea Weber type, but in the same breathe, he is not a Michael Astorino-type either. He will be able to score a bit and provide some sparks for his team on offense. It will be interesting to see how much offense he can indeed provide in Washington this season.

Katchalov is very good on defense. He knows how to use his body to his advantage and he can also be trusted to stay around the net and prevent offensive players from gaining open shots. He knows how to position himself and has great awareness on defense. He seemingly knows when to try and go for the hit or when to try and poke check the puck away. Katchalov is also not afraid to lay his body on the line to try and block shots. As a whole, this area is one of strength for him and he is expected to become a dominant defenseman as his career progresses.

In this area, Katchalov is very average. He has decent endurance and is able to stay out on the ice for longer periods of time than most players can. He also has a good skating ability and decent strength, both of which will help him to stay in possession of the puck when he has it. Both will also allow him to be more even more effective on defense. As a whole, this are rounds out his build very nicely.
