![]() Simulation Sports Network</div> Welcome to the fourth edition of SSN SportsCentre, tonight there were four games on the SMJHL schedule. We will start off in Vancouver where the Detroit Falcons were in town. ![]() ![]() This was a battle of the undefeated as but also the of the Schmidt's as rookie goaltenders Colin and Mike would stand at opposing ends for the first time. Vancouver would set a physical presence early in the game and would not let up as the game went on. Kaspars Tsizling would catch Teemu Smulander with his head down, Smulander remained motionless on the ice and would headed to the locker room but returned shortly after. Outside of a few hits the first period was rather uneventful as neither team scored, combining for a total of ten shots on net. The Whalers would come out of the first intermission flying, John White would score the first goal of the game with a bar down shot at 2:26 of the 2nd period. Ingus Grigorjevs blocked a shot and took the puck end to end before beating Colin Schmidt but he could not find the back of the net as the puck went post to post and stayed out. Detroit got into a little penalty trouble when Craig Stewart Jr pulled down Liam Kinsler on a partial break, no penalty shot was awarded but Setwart Jr would head to the sin bin. On the Powerplay Vancouver would pepper Schmidt with shots as he could not control rebounds. On the fifth shot of the PP first overall pick Kaspars Tsizling would blast a point shot past Schmidt to give the Whalers a 2-0 lead. It did not take long for Detroit to respond as Swanstrom took a beautiful slap pass from Vitols and fired the puck past a sprawling Mike Schmidt to make it 2-1. Vancouver did not let up and continued firing shots at Colin Schmidt and before Detroit could take a breath, King buried his fourth of the season to regain a 2 goal lead. Heading into the third period the Falcons had their work cut out for them down 3-1 and being outshot 26-6. Mike Schmidt stood tall as the Falcons took over the game. Detroit would find at hole at 7:05 when Cousins chipped in a rebound. At 3-2 both goaltenders were stellar and turned away shots left and right and center. A hooking penalty by Ryan O'Brain late in the third period would prove costly as Martins Daugavins served up a knuckle puck to tie the game at 3-3. This one would head to a shootout. Patrick Toews stepped up for his shot with a chance to end it, but was denied by a two pad stack by Colin Schmidt. Rookie Chris MacMalin made the best of his opportunity, completely undressing Mike Schmidt. Thomas King had to score to continue the shootout but found the glass rather than net to seal the Falcons victory. <div align="center"> ![]() Chris MacMilan scores to give Detroit the win.</div> ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() With Kelowna on a four game losing skid they head to St. Louis to take on the scarecrows who have he their own struggles. Jackson Weekes would get his fifth start for St. Louis while Mathis Lundgren would start his second game for the visiting Knights. We pick this game up mid-way through the first period when defensemen Magnus Vikstrand, puts a point shot home 8 seconds into a powerplay. St. Louis responded strong and fired shot after shot at Lundgren but were unable to score after first period despite outs noting their opposition 12-4. St. Louis continued the onslaught and would finally tie the game at 9:44 of the 2nd period when Roland Wolf beat Lundgren with shot that goes off the glass, off Lundgren and in. Less than a minute later Mark Dymo squeezes one through the five hole of Weekes to restore the Knights lead. Damien Giannotti had a chance to extend the lead for Kelowna with an open net put he rang it off the post. The period would end with Kelowna having a 2-1 lead. To start the third period St. Louis studs tainted pressure in the Knights zone for nearly two minutes until James Ryan tapped in a cross crease pass from Jordan Eberle to tie the game at 2-2. Defensemen Kayle Kuzie would break the tie for Kelowna with a point shot on the PP. In the dying minutes St. Louis would not help their cause as they took a penalty. On the ensuing powerplay Blackfyren put the final nail in the coffin to make it a 4-2 game. <div align="center"> ![]() Lundgren and Kuzie celebrate breaking a four game losing streak</div> ![]() ![]() ![]() With the loss to Kelowna fresh on their minds the knights headed for Montreal, who were looking to extend their win streak to three. Ranjan got the start for Montreal after back to back impressive starts while Weekes was back between the pipes for the Scarecrows despite several poor outings. The game started with a bang when Roland Wolf laid out Impact forward Jamal Starr which resulted in a breakaway for Tommy Pickles. Ranjan looked sharp early stopping Pickles and turning away all 12 shots from St. Louis in the period. Montreal only managed three shots on goal in the first 20 minutes but it was enough to come away with the lead as Arrowny scored in the final five minutes of the period to give Montreal the fist goal of the game. Things got a little rough in the second, as Montreal began to take exception to James Ryan and his late hits. Emotions ran high until Peter McBuff posted his second of the season to make it a 1-1 tie. Montreal seemed to regain their focus following a timeout and took it to St. Louis who had appeared defeated despite the tie game. To start the third period, Scarecrows defensemen Ryan Sullivan seemed possessed, hitting everything in sight. Montreal kept their composure and stuck to the game plan. It didn't take long for they regained the lead after a Pettyfer laser found the top corner. Montreal continued to control the play but despite their strong play St. Louis continued to get their chances. With 3:32 remaining in the third Issac Severin picked up the puck after a missed shot by McBuff to beat an unsuspecting Ranjan to make it a 2-2 game. This game would head to a shootout where George Costanza would score giving Montreal the edge in the shootout. Following two unsuccessful attempts by his teammates, it was up James Ryan to put keep St. Louis alive. Following a triple deke, Ranjan was left on the opposite side of the net, Ryan shot the puck and put his hands in the air, but Ranjan rolled over and managed to get a glove infront of it t give Montreal the win. <div align="center"> ![]() George Costanza helped Montreal to victory </div> ![]() :impact: 3 Goals: Arrowny (2) Pettyfer (2) Goalies: Ranjan 18 sv, 4-1-0 :force: REGINA FORCE (1-2-2) vs DETROIT FALCONS (4-0-0) ![]() This matchup marked the fourth time that these two teams have met so far this season. Detroit won all three matchups, one in regulations, another in OT and the last being in a shootout. Colin Schmidt looked to lead his team to a 5-0-0 start while Kostur and the Regina Force planned on getting in the way. Detroit got out to the start they wanted. Kalash would give the Falcons a 1-0 lead at 7:03 of the opening period. Things quickly went south for the home team however when Vitols took a double minor. Regina capitalized on the ensuing four minute PP with goals 32 seconds apart by Guest and Marushin. It wouldn't take long for Regina to add to that lead as Zerchai would score his team leading third goal of the season to make it a 3-1 game. A penalty three seconds into the period by Regina defensemen Niklas Svensson gave Detroit the momentum they needed despite not scoring on the powerplay. Mikko Kalash scored his second of the game by deflecting a Showron shot past Kostur to make it a 3-2 game. Regina continued their parade to the box which allowed Detroit to get back in the game. Connor Lemeul II would score his first career SMJHL goal to even it up on the PP late in the second period. After forty minutes the score was tied despite the Force outshooting their opponents 32-15. Regina continued dominating the play into the third only allowing two shots on goal in the final frame. While Colin Schmidt kept his team in the game, it wasn't enough as Brosen Zerchai would score his second of the game late in the third period to give Regina the go ahead goal. The goal would hold up as Detroit was unsuccessful in tying the game with an empty net. :force: 4 Goals: Guest (2) Marushin (2) Zerchai (3,4) Goalies: Kostur 14 sv, 2-2-2 ![]() ![]() Registered S35 Challenge Cup Champion ![]() Registered Posting Freak
