Winston Windsor: Off-Season Press Conference

Windsor experiments with gravity.
With the Scarecrow’s disappointing first round defeat, Winston Windsor played what many assume was his last game as a Scarecrow, with three junior seasons under his belt. This past season was Windsor’s best season, statistically, as he posted a career high 44 points (15 goals and 29 assists). Although a -5 on the team, Windsor continued to show his acumen as a power-play quarterback with a much-improved nose for the net over previous seasons - going over double his previous goals total. Still, the season has to be considered a failure for the Scarecrows’ captain, as the team was knocked out in the first round for the second year in a row. Barring unforeseen circumstances, Windsor is expected to make the jump to the SHL next year, meaning that despite three seasons in the juniors, he never managed to capture a Four Star Cup win - or even an appearance in the finals. Windsor is affiliated with the Minnesota Chiefs, where he will likely play in a limited role on a low defensive pairing while he continues to develop into a capable SHL player. His defensive play in particular will be in need of improvement as he transitions, but his play with the United Kingdom over the past few seasons has given him some experience in taking on the sort of talent he can expect to face in the SHL proper. With the season concluded for the Scarecrows, Windsor is holding an impromptu press conference to answer any questions the media may have for the departing captain. The floor is now open to any questions. There are a few guys who could step into the role, like John Wick for example, but there's always the chance that another great rookie will come through and reestablish the tradition of rookie captains in St. Louis. I think it just comes down to who the staff feel is going to be right to take the team into the future. Quote:Originally posted by TML99@Oct 2 2015, 11:43 AM
With you leaving and possibly Phil as well how do you think the Crows will fair in their own end? I think the team will do fine in their own end, to be truthful. Myself and Matthews leaving may be a bit of a hit, it's nothing that the team can't get through; depending on who else stays, you could have Cahill, Goode and Carl all holding up the fort. Then the team just needs to draft another defender to fill the void and you've got a solid defensive corps. The real loss, I think, will be in terms of power-play production, but I have faith that given the same minutes those guys can step up and do everything Matthews and I did, just as well. Quote:Originally posted by TML99@Oct 2 2015, 11:43 AM
What do you think are St. Louis' odds of grabbing a great draft pick to help fill the void of all the player going up to the SHL It's honestly a shot in the dark, sometimes; with the right scouting, I'm sure St. Louis will be able to draft some solid roster players, but it always takes a measure of luck to draft someone great. Someone might look fantastic and turn out to be just okay, and someone who looks like a throwaway late round pick could turn out to be a potential all-star. But I think that the hard work that Lahey and King are going to put into the draft will pay off, and any holes the team will have going into the next season will be patched up in due course. Quote:Originally posted by Dangles13@Oct 2 2015, 11:49 AM
Does joining the SHL alleviate some of the sting of missing out on a Cup? Not really -- from the very outset, I wanted to win that Four Star Cup before I made the jump into the SHL. I thought at the end of S24 that I'd missed that opportunity, but I wound up being sent down for a third year -- and the general managers showed faith in me by putting the 'C' on me. It was my last chance to get the cup, and the pressure was on to perform to the best of my ability to do it. We couldn't turn things around and we had our second consecutive first round loss, and it wasn't even that much of a fight. It sucks, and the fact that we couldn't get past a team I'm absolutely certain we should have been able to topple means that I failed as a captain. Quote:Originally posted by Dangles13@Oct 2 2015, 11:49 AM
Any advice for your teammates before you depart for the bigs? Work hard and don't listen to flak coming in from the outside. There's always going to be issues, like we had this year coming out of the draft -- having to trade two of our picks who wouldn't sign for whatever reason. That bothered me, and the notion of draftees picking and choosing like that really cheapens the entire draft, and letting that get under my skin was a mistake. Things happen, just ignore them and move forward or you're going to screw yourself over. Quote:Originally posted by BruinsFanatic100@Oct 2 2015, 11:59 AM
What do you bring to the table next season as a member of the Chiefs? I bring a solid set of offensive tools, a willingness to compete and improve, and I'm a team player. That's probably not the sort of claim you're supposed to make about yourself, but I'm willing to state unequivocally that at the very least, I'm not the type of person who's going to be causing locker room problems. I want the team I'm on to win whether I'm playing top line minutes and special teams, or going five minutes a game to give marquis players a breather. Quote:Originally posted by BruinsFanatic100@Oct 2 2015, 11:59 AM
Favorite Scarecrows moment from your time there? Probably when we got past the Impact in my first season here. Between Wert, Dambach, Buckley, Jagr, and others, I thought we had a genuine championship team and going into the conference finals I was confident we were going to go all the way. We ended up dropping to the Falcons, although we made them work for it, but I think that experience set the bar high for my expectations in St. Louis. It was also my first real taste of the playoffs. When things click, they really click, and I think our team has consistently had solid chemistry all around - what made season 23 special was just that we continued to click in the playoffs. For whatever reason, we haven't been able to since then, but I'm confident that King and Lahey will bring the team forward and reverse our fortunes. Quote:Originally posted by BruinsFanatic100@Oct 2 2015, 11:59 AM
Expectations for your first season in the SHL? I'll probably play relatively few minutes; it's a different game, even if I've played against some of those guys on the International stage. I don't expect to jump in and immediately be playing on the top line and carrying the power-play, and I'm fine with that. If my role is going to be sitting on the bench for most of the game and doing like, three or four minutes a game to cover for guys like Garbanzo when they need to text their girlfriends or something, that's fine. You always have to pay your dues, right? In my first season for the Scarecrows I was playing average minutes, and I didn't go anywhere near the power-play; I actually played a completely defensive role since that's what they needed. I imagine it'll be the same here; adapt to what the team needs. Eventually, I'll go up the ranks and end up taking a larger role, but those things take time. Quote:Originally posted by ArGarBarGar@Oct 2 2015, 12:12 PM
What are your thoughts going into next season for the Chiefs? The Chiefs are a great organization and I've enjoyed all my interactions with them, and it'll be good to finally have a chance to play alongside some of them. I know a lot of guys retired and the team's going to be kind of sparse compared to the past couple seasons where it really looked like a dominant power, but it's not like the reset button's been hit entirely; there's still a good group of guys there and sometimes a refresher does a team good. I think the next season will be pretty fun all around, and I think the team will do well too. There's too much talent, even with the retirements, to expect anything less than a 'good' season. <!--QuoteBegin-ArGarBarGar@Oct 2 2015, 12:12 PM With the exodus of Chiefs players, how do you think you will handle the big workload in your rookie season?
Well, if I really do end up taking on a big workload in my rookie season, then I'll approach it with as much vigor as I can. It's a new challenge, and a new opportunity, and your first season's always the best time to try to set the tone for your career, isn't it? I want to win, and I want to help the team win however I can. I personally hope a big workload will mean actual production on my end, since it's hard to be a small player in the league without offensive hands. So I guess the answer is I think I'll handle it well -- as well as I can. There are plenty of people on the team who can help me out if I'm not getting something, so that won't really be an issue. Conclusion I'd like to thank everyone that asked questions, first and foremost; obviously, without questions there would've been no article at all. I'd also like to congratulate King on his new position as co-GM for the St. Louis Scarecrows. Although I was also applying for that job, I feel he was the right choice; this past season I got to be captain when he would have been an excellent choice, so it's only fair he gets a spot this time around. He's an excellent guy in the locker room and is going to do great things for the team. Between him and Cuffy, I'm certain it won't be long before the Scarecrows are a serious contender once again. ~1550 words
