Halifax Raiders Draft Steals

<div align="center">

The Halifax Raiders are fast approaching their 10th season anniversary in the SMJHL. The Raiders have enjoyed a lot of success over the seasons. Players such as Felix Herzog, Conall Macleod and Pietra Volkova were drafted high and became star players for the organization. In this article we take a look at some of the Raiders latter packs that went on to enjoy great success with the team.

Sekkusu Gan - Season 25 - 5th round, 37th overall

The Raiders landed a number of key players during their initial entry draft in the SMJHL. Conall Macleod would win multiple awards and be the first captain in team history, Brett Broadway stabilized the crease and led the team to their first championship, Carter Rosston led the team in scoring during his rookie season and is still the leading scorer in franchise history. Selected a few picks after Rosston, Sekkusu Gan was a high flying sniper with the Raiders for 3 seasons. A well rounded player, Gan played in all situations for the Raiders and was among the teams leading scorers in each season he played.

Reinis Aumeiesters - Season 26 - 6th round, 48th overall

Selected with the final pick in the 6th round, Aumeisters was one of the last players selected in the S26 SMJHL draft. Aumeisters was very enthusiastic about joining the Raiders right from the time he was drafted. Reinis played over 3 seasons with the Raiders scoring 49 goals and adding 69 assists. Aumeisters won the Macleod trophy as the teams MVP during season 28. The Latvian winger ranks 9th on the Raiders all-time scoring list and is currenty a member of the Portland Admirals.

Leif De Bruin - Season 28 - 2nd round, 16th overall

The Raiders were shocked that De Bruin lasted until the final pick of the 2nd round and were quick to select him. The draft was only 4 rounds long so finding a player with De Bruin's talent at this pick was a coup for the Raiders. De Bruin would go on to be drafted 3rd overall in the following season SHL draft but never really made it in the big leagues. De Bruin recorded 35 goals and 110 assists during his career with the Raiders. LDB is the franchises all-time assists leader and is second in points.

Toivo Kosonen - Season 30 - 5th round, 38th overall

Toivo Kosonen is undoubtedly the most dominant defenseman in Raiders history. After scoring at a moderate pace in his rookie season Toivo was a huge scoring threat for Halifax in his final two seasons with the team. Kosonen won the leagues award for the top defenseman to close out his career with the Raiders. A team first player, Toivo served as the teams captain and was always well liked by his teammates. Kosonen finished his Raiders career with 42 goals and 67 assists. Toivo is currently a defenseman for the New England Wolfpack.

Reed Laing - Season 30 - 6th round, 43rd overall

Reed was the center of attention in Halifax for all the right reasons. Laing was a key player during the Raiders season 30 championship run and was a dominating player for the Raiders the two seasons following that. Laing pretty much rewrote the record books in season 32, putting up the best season in Raiders history. Laing finished her Raiders career 3rd on the teams all-time scoring list, recording 67 goals and 72 assists in 150 games. Laing was the center of a tampering case involving the Buffalo Stampede, Reed ended up signing with Toronto after all of the dust settled.

Zander Rhys - Season 32 - 4th round, 32nd overall

The top defenseman in the SMJHL last season, the Raiders struck gold when Zander Rhys fell to them with the last pick in the 4th round of the season 32 draft. Zander has a bright career ahead of him and there's a strong possibility that he could return to Halifax next season. Selected in the 2nd round of the S33 SHL Draft by the Toronto North Stars, Rhys is viewed as one of the top defensive prospects in the entire SHL. Zander is already one of the top 10 scoring defenseman in franchise history and could very well become one of the best defenseman in Raiders history.

SO there ya have it,

It's not the end of the world is you slip a bit in the draft!

Great article but I think you're missing the 19th pick in the S25 SMJHL draft

You're right

Kolesnikovs was great for the Raiders! Huge part of our first championship and the type of center that makes any team better. 5th all-time in team scoring with 36 goals and 90 assists. Petr won multiple awards with the Raiders and would become a first round pick of the Winnipeg Jets.

Cheers

Laing being called a steal isn't really a fair statement considering he made is very clear pre-draft that he would only play for Halifax. Halifax normally would've had to use a 1st or 2nd on him to get that type of player but were able to wait until the 6th because nobody else wanted to waste a pick on a potential headache.
