I’m not exactly sure what this is going to be. It’s not a pitch, that’s for sure. I’m not here to make any promises, but rather explain my frame of mind with my new player Mercer Church. I’ve been in this league a couple other times, and during those times I’ve had various experiences. Returning here I’ve seen a lot of familiar faces from my other runs, but also a lot of members who are a part of other leagues. In addition to that, there are a lot of new faces, and faces that have a bigger role here than they did when I was relevant for a few seasons here.
For them, and for others, I suppose this is an introduction and/or a re-introduction.
Past Players
When I first joined the SHL it was around the same time I joined VHL. I created a player named Vinny Chezno, which for many seasons was a depth defenseman for the Edmonton Blizzard. I gave the SHL a decent shot, but the VHL was more suitable to my needs and I connected more with the members on that site. That’s why Chezno really was just a player who I updated infrequently, and was more of a favour to Corc and Tez. In saying that he won multiple cups, and was actually a fun player to have. I spent a lot of time in the Blizzard locker room during that time, and couldn’t have a bad thing to say about my experience there. The league just didn’t draw me in, and my full concentration was on my first-generation player in the VHL at the time.
I swore with my second player that I would give the SHL my full attention. I actually took a break from the VHL after my second player (GM Player) retired, and gave it a real shot with Jhonas Skarsgaard. I actually had a lot of fun. I felt invested in the league, I took on jobs, did PbP, was active in the SHL LR to the same extent I was in the VHL. Admittedly I was in the mode of maxing my player out to it’s fullest with Skarsgaard. I eventually went first overall in the S18 Draft to the Panthers, a pick that in the long term might not have been the best decision. In saying that, I did get over 1000 TPE with him, and signed long term in LA, so I don’t really feel I was a bust as a 1OA. But things dropped off after I hit 1000, and I did lose interest. I love the LA LR, and I do hope to return to the team again, as many of those guys I enjoyed playing with. But there was something that just wasn’t challenging. I was able to auction of sigs and make 50 Mill in an offseason, after that I was just posting in threads to claim - I didn’t find myself really that invested in sim results.
Skarsgaard went inactive, and until this season, was hit with regression year after year, as he devolved from the hard hitting Swede with the scoring touch, into what Vinny Chezno was, a depth defense player.
The Other League
I feel like I should talk about my time there, and now what could potentially be a transition from one league to another.
I mean let’s be serious my reputation there is a big reason Skarsgaard was selected first overall in S18. It’s probably a big reason why Church will go high. I worked very hard on my players there, and I’ve always been very engaged with the community at that site. I mean I’ve created three players and they are all HOFers (my last player is playing out his final year but is already Top 25 in Scoring History).
But I have found myself a little bored over there, and I do think it’s because of the success. I’ve kinda accomplished everything I can over there. Other than being a successful GM, but I’m not overly interested in that when you have 3 competing teams per year, and you really only have enough cap/members to ice two full lines (if you’re lucky).
I ran the Magazine over there for over 160 issues, over the course of five years. That became very boring, and it was a very underappreciated job. But I saw that as one of my biggest accomplishments there. I created some added value to the league, and was a very consistent contributor to the community. After a minor run-in with management about it, I realized that all that effort was just not worth it, and I stepped down as Editor - and ultimately have been collecting welfare since. I’ll be playing out the rest of my career(s) there and will likely take an extended break from that league.
Mercer Church
So what can you expect from Mercer Church? What can you expect from STZ this time around?
Well, like I said previously, I’m not going to make any promises. I’m here to try and see if a change of scenery is what I need to keep me interested in Sim Leagues. There are a lot of things about this league that I love, and I want to re-engage and see if this could be the right fit. I’m at a stage in my personal life where I quite simply don’t have the same amount of time and drive to play video games like I used to. However, I enjoy this shit, and it does itch a scratch I have.
As for Church’s potential… Well, I certainly can say he will be better than Chezno. I wouldn’t say he would be into the mid-point of my two players, as I see myself earning more than the midpoint of those two players. I aim to be a productive member of a team, and go from there.
The player’s potential will most certainly correlate with my interest in the league. If it sparks the same way as Skarsgaard, maybe I’d even be willing to take on a job or a higher role to add value to the league. If it doesn’t, well at least I have a decent starting bankroll to fill my need to see those TPE numbers increase each week.
Thanks to those who read this far. I look forward to reconnecting with the members I knew before, and meeting new ones that I didn’t come across during my other players.
