(First time posting, hope this is done correctly!)
Recently, Eli Dunspar sat down with the newest member of the Montreal Militia, Stephen Wormster. The 6' 3", 150lb, right-handed defenceman (drafted 67th overall) sat down with the Montreal Gazette to introduce himself to the town, establish his goals, and set out on a search for the best poutine. Eli Dunspar: First thing's first: Welcome to Canada and the organization! Stephen Wormster: Thanks! It's a honor to be here! Montreal has a rich history, both inside and outside of the hockey world, and I'm excited to see where things go from here! ED: So you were drafted 67th overall. Was that higher or lower than you expected? SW: You know honestly? I had no expectations coming into this. I just wanted to be drafted. I knew I wasn't going to be the big name in the first round, and that's fine by me. I like flying under the radar a little, y'know? I'm not the flashiest of players, I'm not the fastest, I don't have the hardest shot, etc. But I'm at a point where I'm still enjoying every game and just going out there trying to be better than the last game I played. ED: You talked about your game there a little. What "label" would you give yourself, position wise? SW: I like to think of myself as a two-way defenceman. I like to get up on the plays a little, and I'm not the biggest of guys, so a stay-at-home, shutdown guy just isn't me. I don't find myself taking a lot of insane risks; I like to just play solidly in both ends. ED: You were born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, now playing in Montreal. How's that going for you so far? SW: Oh it'll be an adjustment don't worry! I still need a passport honestly! But in regards to hockey, I'll always have a spot in my heart for the hometown boys. I've bled orange and black all my life, and now I'll just have to open up and let some new colors blend in here. ED: Let's do some rapid fire questions. Whatever comes to your head first, yeah? Reason you chose 33 as your number? SW: Patrick Roy, which Montreal should know quite well. ED: Favorite color? SW: Green. ED: Favorite food? SW: Toss-up between Cheesesteaks and seafood. Poutine might be added to that list shortly with a little help from the locals. ED: Favorite type of music? SW: I'm an all around rock guy. I like everything from paramore, to Iron Maiden, to My Chemical Romance, to Metallica. I've seen close to 200 different artists live. Im a big concert junkie honestly. ED: Guilty pleasure? SW: I don't know if this counts, but I'm saying Gordon Ramsay. I love all of his shows and can't get enough. I still suck at cooking, but maybe I'll start taking that a bit more seriously to impress the new teammates! ED: What's your main objective in your first season? SW: To not get booed off the ice! Montreal, like Philly, has a dedicated fan base. I want to play well enough to get, and stay, on their good side. ED: Do you have a celebration planned for your first goal? SW: Nah, I'm not a big "celly" guy. By the way: I hate that wording! But no; nothing crazy is planned. Probably just a solid fist pump, y'know? Act like you've been there. ED: If you get a big pay raise, what would you spend the money on? SW: Stability, mentally and financially. I didn't grow up poor, but I didn't grow up rich either. A lot of sacrifices were made and I honestly just want to give as much to my family as possible until everybody can live a more comfortable lifestyle. Family is a big thing with me, for sure. ED: Any parting words for the Militia fans out there? SW: I'm looking forward to being on the positive end of the "Ole`!" chants so don't let me down! I'm really excited to get camp started, and even more excited for the season. I'm still a rookie, so bear with me as I adjust. There's going to be rough patches. Just be patient, and I won't let you down in the end. |
