Kelowna Knights (5) vs Colorado Raptors (6)

Despite all odds, and perhaps a little bit of luck, this game turned into a classic David vs Goliath story. The Colorado Raptors were able to bring down the mighty Kelowna Knights in a shootout win. The Raptors coming into this game with only 3/15 wins and the Knights with the reverse 12/15 wins. It was clear that the Knights have been a favorite all season long. Even looking at the stats of this game they had everything going for them. However, it was the perseverance and heart of Colorado that kept them in it.

Period 1

The period starts off hot Tye Maximo with a quick feed after the faceoff win by Andrew Martin at only 2:29 in. It seems like the chemistry is between these two rookies are really starting to heat up which can only be good news for the Raptors. In short order, the burning hot Cash Savage scores on a interception by Michael Fischer, making this game 1-1 just 3 minutes later. The battle continues but at 11:38 Matej Elias gets his 6th of the season for a beauty shot from the point.

Period 2

Starting the 2nd, the Raptors begin to implement their counterattack, which did not take long to take effect. At 1:28 after a missed shot by Tony Pepperoni ,Sulak O’Hritea gets the inside on the Knights defenseman and was able to put one home past Kata Vilde.

Despite being being wildly outshot, the Raptors are able to get another goal to tie up the game, this time coming from rookie Ignatius Blunt with a clinical set up by both Kazlauskas and McClure III. Unfortunately, the the nerves of the game have caught up to Colorado and with an unfortunate penalty by Vladimir Vaskov allowed for the Knights to grab the momentum back. 4 seconds into the PP veteran Kevin Maddox (12:54) was able put this game back on even ground.

Period 3

The third period the Knights still out shot the Raptors, 17 to 10, but that and the two penalties by Sulak O'Hritea and Jake Reid still did not put away the the tenacious Raptors. The period starts off similar to the past two, with a quick goal by Colorado . At only 1:45 Alex Winters for his 4th of the season. However, the vets of Kelowna stepped up and Daddy Mack was about to answer the goal with his own, less than 2 minutes later. With another Knights goal (Peter Walker 10:57) it seemed that their composure would hold onto this lead for the win. But Nate Forsberg had something to say about that and answered the call, with little more than 2 minutes remaining. Forcing the game to the eventual shootout win they would have.

Goaltending performance review:

Kata Vilde (Kelowna): This was a performance that Vilde would like to forget sooner rather than later. Even the most elite goalies in the world have off nights, and this was definitely one for the Knights star goalie. Coming up with just 15 saves on 20 shots, Vilde had a performance that allowed the plucky Raptors to stay in the game. While the Knights did still get a point for the shootout loss, they will certainly look for better performances from their last line of defense.

Scottey Crawfling (Colorado): Most of the time when a goalie posts as .875 SV% in a game, it is a safe bet to assume that that team lost. In what wasn’t a great performance for the Seattle Riot draft pick, he did just enough to earn his team the two points for a win. Not allowing a goal in the shootout after facing forty in regulation, the Raptors keeper earned the win for just the fifth time this season.

Analysis of the First Star: Peter Walker Knights

Now, it seems strange that a member of the losing team should win the first star and even more strange that Kelowna actually lost this game, but the Raptors have found some chemistry finally.

Despite their loss, Peter Walker takes the first star with an impressive performance of a goal and an assist and dominating the face-off circle whilst doing so.

He assisted the tying goal in the second period and went on to score the go-ahead goal in the third until those pesky Raptors tied it up again. A solid effort from a player who shone a little brighter than everyone else in an outstanding barn-burner of a game. Let the hay smoulder. There will be a re-match.

Tonight's: Was it really just a 2-min?
Jake Reid is back at it again whacking his stick

I wrote about Reid the other week, that time it was also a high stick infraction but in my opinion a faulty one.
The refs seem remember last week as this time he got a double minor for his antics.

The high sticking in this game is clearly a penalty, you can easily see Reid whack his opponent out of frustration after he lost a board battle.
Taking revenge on someone on the ice is a dangerous path and should also be reprimanded.
A double minor is justifiable here, maybe even a major pen could have been served.

SPECIAL TEAMS REPORT

Today we take a look at game 64 of the SMJHL, Kelowna Knights vs. Colorado Raptors.

First Period

There were no penalties taken in the first period. The period would end with the Knights leading 2 to 1.

Second Period

First penalty of the game goes against Colorado, when Vladimir Vaskov loses his cool and is called for hooking at 12:50. The Knights waste no time on this power play, 4 seconds into the man advantage, Kevin Maddox slaps one off the face off passed Scottey Crawfling. The goal would tie the game 3-3. Colorado would be down a man once again when Sachimo Zoidberg Jr is called for roughing at 15:03. The Knights come out strong on this power play, dominating the whole 2 minutes. They would record 6 shots on net all stopped by Crawfling.

Second period would end in a 3-3 tie.

Third Period

Colorado seems to be filling up the sin bin tonight as they take another penalty. This one coming from Sulak O'Hritea for interference at 4:47. Kelowna's PP unit is out once again, this time producing 7 shots, 2 of which are on net, before yet another penalty is called on the Raptors. At 6:12, Jake Reid receives a double minor for high sticking. Reid is seen getting up from the ice, after being checked along the boards, and jabbing the butt end of his stick into his opponents face. This is a really dangerous play and he could have ended someone's career. Thankfully the player will be okay and Reid will have a hearing in the morning. With a 5 on 3 advantage, the Knights would only have time to record one shot, which goes wide of the net, before O'Hritea is out of the box. The Knights would record 4 more shots on net but are unable to beat tender Crawfling.

Third period ends in a tie at 5-5, the game goes to overtime (no penalties taken) and then a shootout where Colorado would win.

Kelowna Knights PP - 1/5 (20%) PK - 0/0

Colorado Raptors PP - 0/0 PK - 4/5 (80%)

While Colorado took all the penalties, they still managed to win the game in a shootout. Not for the lack of effort to Kelowna's power play unit, they had a lot of shots but could not bury the puck behind a hot glove. If you are looking at this game stat wise, you really miss how well the Knights PP unit played, and how the Raptors PK unit relied heavaly on Crawfling. Jake Reid's double minor penalty should have a hearing tomorrow, we will wait and see how they turns out.

Welcome back to our Player of The Game show for the recent match between the Kelowna Knights and Colorado Raptors.

Our choice tonight was a little tougher than most nights, however we've decided on Nate Forsberg! Forsberg had a pretty decent night being a little under 50% on his faceoffs as well as scoring the game tying goal for the Raptors to bring the game to OT!

His first and only goal of the night came at 17:52 of the third period. Sachimo Zoidberg Jr was moving into the offensive zone when he was suddenly crushed by Darren McCarty. Forsberg was able to pick up the loose puck and put one past Kata Vilde with only minutes remaining in the period.

What happens on the dot with Mr. Faceoffs

Faceoffs takes up a big role in today's hockey. Everytime you win a draw you get possession of the puck. The more your team have the puck, the more scoring chance you get and vice-versa. Which is why Centers take pride in winning them draws and why coaches love center men who do win them.

Kelowna Knights: 49 wins on 84 faceoffs taken ( 58,3%)
Colorado Raptors: 35 wins on 84 faceoffs taken (41,7%)

Clear advantage for the Kelowna Knights once again.

Winner: Kelowna Knights' center Peter Walker with 17 wins on 24 faceoff taken (70,8%)
Loser: Colorado Raptors' center Andrew Martin with 5 wins on 16 faceoff taken (31,3%)

In the Dot with Buck Ranger

Hello everyone, and welcome to this edition of in the dot, featuring your sleaziest centerman, Buck Ranger. Today Buck will be talking about the performance of Kelowna and Colorado in the faceoff dot during game 64.

Overall, the stats favoured Kelowna fairly heavily with them winning 58.3 of all the faceoffs. This faceoff performance was led largely on the backs of Michael O'Dowd and Peter Walker who won 66.6% and 70.8% of their faceoffs respectively. The chunks of losses were largely from people stepping in for faceoffs.

Bad draws of the night has to go to Zakhar Turakov winning only a third of his faceoffs.

Game of the Week

Colorado escaped another close one with Kelowna here. This was a back and forth war and this is another one Kelowna will not forget any time soon.

Maximo scored early for the Raptors but the lead would be short lived thanks to goals from Knights Savage and Elias. The Knights outshot the Raptors 9 to 4 in the first.

The Raptors showed guts in the second as O'Hritea tied it up in the second minute. Blunt put Colorado back in front but Maddox toom advantage of a power play and tied it up again.

Alex Winters put the Raptors in front early in the third but the Knights weren't done yet. Daddy Mack tied it up and Walker put Kelowna in front once again, 5-4. Things looked to be over for Colorado but Forsberg refused to quit and put one in with two minutes to go.

Raptors win the shootout and escape with the W.

Kelowna outplayed Colorado but still came up short. Great heart from both teams.

Analyzing the Game-Tying Goal; Or, the story of a TANK

Most people look at an exciting game like this one and see a group effort highlighting the package. They focus on the goal scorers, the differences of the many. However, none really look into the driving force behind a specific play. In this case, the Colorado Raptors looked like they were entering the final two minutes of the game down by a goal. Instead, one man took it upon himself to drive the play forward and capitalize.

That man is Sachimo Zoidberg Jr.

You may think, wait, Nate Forsberg scored the goal. That's true, but lets look at the tapes:

From the face-off in the Raptors zone, Zoidberg looked prepared to drive forward. O'Dowd won it for Kelowna, active hands and feet from Zoidberg then locked down the middle-slot area of the ice and forced play around the back of the net to Izuku and over to James Dekens. The next pass was intercepted by Gvidas Kaslauskas and that's where it starts. Zoidberg immediately starts pushing up ice, breaking for the wall as an outlet. Kaslauskas banks it off the boards around the defense and Zoidberg is ahead on the rush with trailers coming to his aid.

Now is where Zoidberg goes from man to TANK. He takes a shot from Darren McCarty from Kelowna, and he stumbles a bit and the puck is knocked loose. Zoidberg then turns into the hit, boxes out McCarty from the puck and drives through him with pure power and energy. This also gave limited time for his team to catch up as well as Kelowna to start to recover. It wasn't enough though, as Zoidberg was able to get that one step by McCarty and fire a puck toward the net. Nate Forsberg gets it on his stick, settles it for just one second and bangs it home just past the outstretched pad of Vilde to tie this game.

While Forsberg gets the credit on the goal, this was all the work of Sachimo Zoidberg Jr. showing prime leadership skills and pushing the pace higher than ever every step of the way.

An old man's dream ended. A young man's vision of the future opened wide. Young men have visions, old men have dreams. But the place for old men to dream is beside the fire.
