S45 SMJHL Draft Review: Expansion Teams

Now we come to the final part of this series, the expansion teams. First the Eastern conference was covered, then the Western Conference and now the expansion teams. This draft is most important to these teams as each only had 4 players going into the draft.

Lethbridge Lions

9. Eva Lykke Aparjode
With the first pick in franchise history, the Lethbridge Lions select long-time member jogurtaa’s player Eva Lykke Aparjode. Jogurtaa’s last player had a very good career and jogurtaa is well-liked on the servers. Jogurtaa rocks a 52 million dollar bank and has a proven history of success. When making the first pick in franchise history, it should be someone who can is proven and can be relied upon. Jogurtaa is a solid foundation to build this team upon.

19. Brennan Kennedy Jr.
Lethbridge returned to the proven commodity of re-creates by taking Brennan Kennedy Jr. bk1689 is another proven user with an extremely deep bank account. Kennedy has been updating for a couple of weeks so he has a good base amount of TPE. No complaints at all about this pick.

29. Monkey D. Luffy
Lethbridge grabs their first new user on the site with Monkey D. Luffy. TnlAstatine has been very active on the site in his first few days. He has over 16 hours on the site, over 40 posts leading up to the draft and created a sig before the draft. I like this guy, because he reminds me of my friend who says he hates One Piece, but he’s watched over 300 episodes. You think by episode 20 or so you’d give up on something you don’t like, but 300 episodes? There’s something fishy about that. Sorry. TnlAstatine made media right before the draft, that and  his activity and posts on the site are what put him over the top.

39. Jøln DuBølk
With Pick 39, Lethbridge brings in ther 2nd first-gen player in MCP_’s player Jøln DuBølk. MCP completed all IPs leading into the draft, had 8 hours on the site and 17 posts prior to the draft. While MCP seems like a quality active user, I think there were players who had shown a little more commitment to the site. MCP didn’t complete a mock or early-bird PT when I had last checked, and didn’t have anything that stood out to me like a signature.

49. Donny McMasters
Donny McMasters is user Mantroll’s first player creation. Mantroll has shown commitment to the site early by completing the majority of pre-draft tasks. I don’t believe he completed the early-bird PT which is the only knock against this prospect. Mantroll has spent 7 hours on the site and while he didn’t have a graphic sig, Mantroll did go and make a drop-down signature before the draft. With 19 posts, there were still steals available at this time in the draft, but this is around where Donny McMasters should have gone in the draft

59. Patrice Nadeau
Patrice Nadeau is another new player created by Fluw.  I had him in the same grouping as a player like Jøln DuBølk, and at this point there were still players in the groups above them. Nadeau did complete the IPs, so it’s quite possible Lethbridge had some good interactions with this player. At this point in the draft some teams have been a little unpredictable, so the Lethbridge probably just wanted to make sure they got their guy. Fluw has 6 hours on the site and nothing that really pushed him apart. This pick is fine at 59 but maybe a little earlier than what I would like.

69. Dickens Makeout-King
Well with the announcement that one King is leaving the site for a bit, Lethbridge brings in the new King. A Makeout-King to be more exact. I don’t know why someone would brag about being a makeout king, let alone the makeout king of Manitoba, but maybe that’s the intrigue that caused Lethbridge to go after this player. In all seriousness, Dickens Makeout-King was very active leading up to the draft and completed the majority of his tasks while spending 7 hours and 27 posts on the site. He also has 2 upreps already in his early career. Finally, I don’t think there are many better uses of the 69th pick than to pick this guy.

79. Sami Kärppä
Sami Karpaa fell right about where he should have in the draft. He was active and had completed a few pre-draft tasks. There were some steals still available at this pick, but this wasn’t an unreasonable pick as I had Karpaa in the 70-85 range for being drafted. Ais6000’s time on the site was hidden, so that’s unknown, but they did make 12 posts and the last one was on the day of the draft. Good pick for Lethbridge

89. Jordan Joestar
Not much to really complain about when you’re in the late 80s. Joestar was active, had made updates and was at 163 TPE before the draft. Honorary_Weeb had spent 3 hours on the site prior to the draft and made 6 posts. There were players like Lem and Cant Eykhil who were still available and very good potential picks.

99. Cant Eykhil
Speak of the devil. I like the Cant Eykhil trade. This is linsangeles’s recreate and to be frank, even I missed out on this player. I’m not sure why he fell through the cracks on my scouting, but I believe he hadn’t completed any tasks when I had last checked, and there was a big gap between when he created and when he ended up coming back right before the draft. When I checked, he only had 10 earned TPE that was earned in December, it seems like he was doing ACs and Trainings and not posting them. I still don’t believe he did pre-draft tasks, but I’m not 100% sure because I don’t know much about him.

109. Mack Martin
We’re getting to the point where I know very little about these prospects. While sorting through I had Mack Martin as inactive, but I may be wrong.

119. Matias Kunzle
Same story as Mack Martin.

129. Jared Myton
Another player I thought was inactive.

139. Junebug Langdon-Wray
I believe Junebug is a re-create, but I’m not certain. Langdon-Wray was on the site the day of the draft, so they very well might be an active player which would be a steal at 139.

149. Joaquin Rodriguez Herrara
Finally, another player I thought was inactive. It’s very possible that these are just roster-spot fills at this point, but maybe there’s something more to it.

Final Verdict and TL/DR
Lethbridge had a good draft. They didn’t do anything that surprised me and they made a couple good quality value picks. I honestly think I’m just gonna stop giving grades because everyone had a sweet draft. It’s not going to be until a couple seasons from now that we can really analyze this. I’ll rate this draft 15 picks out of a quality S45 draft. That makes no sense, deal with it.

Anaheim Outlaws

10. Jerry Mander
With Anaheim’s first pick in their inaugural draft is Gcool’s re-creation Jerry Mander. With your first pick you’ve gotta take your guy, and there’s not much that separates 1-30 in this draft, so Anaheim felt that they wanted Gcool and they got him. I don’t know much about Gcool personally, so I can’t speak to his personality or locker room presence. Hopefully Anaheim gets a quality player to build its new team around!

20. Collin Gibbles
Spartan Gibbles is a new user who has been very active leading up to the draft. While only spending 10 hours on the site, Gibbles completed IPs, the mock and early-bird PT. He also created 2 pieces of media before the draft. He only completed 6 IPs when I checked, but it’s quite possible he went back and finished the rest afterwards. Looks like a good pick for Anaheim at this point in the draft.

30. Osbert Whacker
I think this was a reach at 30. BWIII was one of the earlier first-gen players to join the class, as a result he had more than 170 TPE before the draft started. However, He did miss quite a few tasks (it looks like he did IPs but I’m not sure if he claimed them). From a pure potential standpoint BWIII did spend 18 hours on the site before the draft started, but as someone who created in late November it’s not a sign of someone who spent a whole bunch of time at once, but rather a user with consistent time on the site. This might be a better sign in the long-run, but still I think this pick was a little too early for me.

40. Tibuk Soonika
Another reach in my opinion. chetib got in the early-bird PT, but I didn’t see any interested prospect threads or a mock draft. They only had 10 posts on the site in 6 hours. Chetib might end up being a very good active player, but at 40 there were people who had built up much more impressive resumes available.

50. Anthony Banthony
Rumour is Nebula spent hours in deep thought thinking of the best player name of all time. Anthony Banthony is a quality prospect who is looking to make an impact in the SMJHL. Nebula spent 7 hours on the site and made 17 post prior to the draft while finishing the majority of tasks prior to the draft. I think Banthony is going to play a big part in the Outlaws future.

60. Mike Hunt
Atlas Hunter’s player Mike Hunt is a quality pick at number 60. Hunt completed the majority of his tasks, spent a whopping 21 hours on the site and made 43 post prior to the draft. Atlas Hunter already has a sig and completed media before the draft. I really like this pick at 60 and I believe Mike Hunt is going to go on to have a great career in the SHL and SMJHL

70. Mathias Seger
Seger is a first-gen player created by Segi. Segi completed 10 IPs before the draft, but did not complete the mock or early bird PT. This Is an acceptable pick in the 70s, there were steals still available, but this is where you’d expect a player of this calibre to go. Segi spent 9 hours on the site and posted 18 times prior to the draft. I think Anaheim’s got a good player here at 70.

80. Clifton Outlaw
I honestly wonder is Anaheim took this player just because his last-name is outlaw? Maybe there’s more to this prospect, because he was quickly traded for the 82nd pick which still has value in this draft. Obviously in my opinion there were better options available at 80, I didn’t have Clifton Outlaw as an active player going into the draft. I won’t penalize it too much because they got another pick for him just 2 picks later.

82. Thornton Opperman
Thornton Opperman is Copperm’s first player. I really like this pick. Copperm completed the IP and the mock prior to the draft. He had only spent an hour on the site but made 18 posts and completed enough tasks to show he’s serious. I really like this pick at 82 and I think Thornton Opperman is going to be a quality player for seasons in Anaheim.

90. Alexei Ivan
Ivanov was active at the time of the draft and was a prospect that probably should have been picked in the 90s. There were better players available, but this pick is perfectly acceptable at 90. A plus with Ivanov was that he did have a sig made which is a big plus out of a prospect picked this late. He spent 3 hours on the site and made 6 posts in his time prior to the draft.

100. Johnny Kokihoki
I didn’t have this player listed as active. I think there were still a couple players available at this point who had been on the site the day of the draft who may have been better suited at this pick, but at 100, it’s not a big deal. They may even have some info on this prospect that I don’t.

110. Sean Watson
Similar situation to Johnny Kokohoki.

120. Jaune Attend
Finally, we’ve got another player who I believe is inactive. I really do hope I’m wrong with any three of these players though!

Verdict and TL/DR
I wasn’t a huge fan of Anaheim’s draft, they had the worst position of any team in the draft which put them at a large disadvantage. I still don’t think they did their best, but it’s difficult when you get a team only a few days before the draft. Hopefully I am wrong and Anaheim has a great future in the SMJHL.

Well, that’s everything. I’m sure there’s a ton of people who disagree with a lot of what I said, so feel free to question my idiocy. If you really want to talk about it, I’m itching to get another podcast in so we could do it through that. Thanks for reading these if you did!
