Hi and welcome to a review of the S45 SMJHL entry draft. I haven’t tried to do one of these since the S42 entry draft and that one was a struggle and a half and some of you may remember I did not complete it. So, I’ve changed the organization of this draft review and have taken a different approach to it. For this draft review I will be doing it by round instead of by team like I did last time and each round will be a separate article. I think the last time I did this it was too hard to go team by team and that was in a smaller draft, so it would be much harder to do it that way this time around. It is also highly unlikely I get to every round before I burn out and can’t type another word. Separating the rounds into different articles means that I will not have to worry about the article ending abruptly and it will also take some strain off the graders. I remember I busted out like a crazy long article last time and Zoone wanted to kill me. All of this said I’m going to be working diligently on these articles until Monday evening trying to get every dollar I can without going insane. To my Detroit boys, I’m thinking on Christmas day I will write an article highlighting any of you I couldn’t get to in my other draft rankings and will do something fun with our players even though it won’t be doubles week anymore :( . So without further ado here is a review of the first round of this year’s SMJHL entry draft.
1.) Nikolai Evans
Username: ztevans
Position: Defense
Shoots: Left
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 210 lbs
Player Type: Offensive Defenseman
My good friend Zachariah Tevans went first overall in the largest draft in SHL history (as far as I know). Zach has that charm you’d expect of someone with a southern drawl as thick as his and I’m not surprised he went first overall. Unfortunately he had to go first overall to stinky Montreal, boo. Zach was in deep with the Montreal-Detroit rivalry on the Detroit side for years. Some really stinky players went through Montreal, and there were some really good playoff matchups too. Now Zach resides on the wrong side of the rivalry and we will be holding a service December 27th at noon est. Please bring a 40 to pour one out for your home boy. Seriously though Zach is a great pick, before he wrote any media for this doubles week he already had $70+ million in the bank. Zach has a good pedigree with a player who won multiple cups on a very strong Winnipeg team. I don’t think Zach has ever built a defenseman in an STHS league, but his starting build looks really great for an offensive defenseman. He has a strong emphasis on defense and skating which we all know are some of the most important attributes for a defenseman, it also looks like he is going to be a shoot first defenseman as he has a strong scoring skill already. There are obviously room for improvement in multiple places since this is just his original build, but most noticeable is strength. You would really like to see him up that strength to have better puck control in the corners. All in all, an excellent pick here, but you really couldn’t go wrong with many players in this draft.
2.) Karlstraße Scholz
Username: karlssens
Position: Defense
Shoots: Left
Height: 6’2”
Weight: 220 lbs
Player Type: Offensive Defenseman
Karlssens is a long time member in the SHL but, I’ve honestly never spoken a word to him and know nothing about him except he is the Edmonton GM. Taking a GM who has a bank account of $32 million is pretty much never a bad pick, but I don’t have much to say about the guy because we have never associated. As for Karlstraße Scholz he appears to be a very balanced offensive defenseman. He has a strong defensive nature but is also a very good scorer. His main weakness is checking but beyond that he at least has some skill in all of the main attributes important to a defenseman.
3.) Olivier Cloutier
Username: Jenny
Position: Right Wing
Shoots: Left
Height: 5’7”
Weight: 165 lbs
Player Type: Sniper
Disclaimer: I noticed Jenny was updated past her 155 TPE build, not sure how many of the other people will be and how many I might miss because of timing writing this. Please do not get upset if your build is different than what your current build may be.
I’ve had enough interactions with Jenny to know she is a cool person and someone I would probably enjoy talking to and being on a team with. That said we have never been like crazy great friends or anything just casual acquaintances. I do know however, that she is beloved on the site especially by anybody who went through Kelowna while her and EJ were GMing. I also know that she will help out anyone who asks as I’ve seen her help a bunch of rookies back when GMs were allowed in the rookie discords as well as in this seasons rookie discord. All in all she is definitely the kind of person you want on your junior team. She is well versed in the SHL, has had a successful player, willing to help out any rookies, and part of the SMJHL PT team? Definitely a great pick up by the Anchorage Armada here. As a player Olivier Cloutier is a sniper who isn’t totally inept when it comes to passing. He has strong puck handling and solid defense which are both really important attributes for success in the junior levels. Checking is Cloutier’s only glaring weakness. He also low skating for a sniper of Cloutier’s caliber and that is definitely something I would look into working on in practice time.
4.) Kalvins Zvejnieks
Username: Gobbles
Position: Center
Shoots: Left
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 216 lbs
Player Type: Power Forward
Gobbles was the first, first-gen taken in this years SMJHL entry draft and he went a crazy 4th overall. That means he surpassed the likes of some legendary SHL members, but we will get to them later, let’s focus on Gobbles for right now. I had never heard of Gobbles before and when Detroit traded up I thought yes they might go for pris. Nothing against Gobbles I just am good friends with pris and never been on a team with her. Anyways I DMed Tig and he was like were going for Gobbles and I was like whomst is that and he told me he was a first-gen who did a ton of media and had a huge bank account. So I was like Gucci, love that. But when I went and slid into that bank account section he only $8.7 mil. Now that does not mean he does not have a larger bank. Graders have been swamped with doubles week and let’s all just take a second to be thankful for a graders. They do a lot for us every year around this time but never as much as they are doing right now. So I asked Gobbles himself how much he thought he had earned and he said by his count $35 million. That’s pretty bad ass for joining less than a month ago. As for his player Kalvins Zvejnieks he is a very strong defensive minded forward. Great defense and face offs and a real strong skater. He will find himself on the PK a bunch I bet. The biggest problem I have with his build is his scoring weakness, because that is something very difficult to over come and be a successful player in the SHL. If you’re looking for a defensive guy, look no further.
5.) Anastasia O’Koivu
Username: Pris
Position: Defense
Shoots: Left
Height: 5’11”
Weight: 165 lbs
Player Type: Defensive Defenseman
Pris is a wonderful human being that I thoroughly enjoy talking to. She has nurtured many of the members of the SHL as she was the long time mentor head. I honestly believe that mentors are the most important job in the league. If you can’t make people feel welcome and want to stay in the league then the league has no future. Pris is one of the best at making people feel welcome and helping them understand the difficult parts of the SHL as it is confusing when you join new. Shout out in this section to TDZ because he really impressed me as a mentor this season in the rookie discord. All of you guys are doing a great job and the league would be nowhere without you. Pris is a generally well liked member of the league by almost everyone, I know there are some who are still a little bitter about her going first overall but to those people all I have to say is “and what about it?” Pris was also head of the SHL PT team for a while so she is no stranger to the dollars having held several jobs. She has a very reasonable bank account of $38 million plus. Now Pris is just now returning from some inactivity as she had to step away from the league for a while due to the fact that some people in the league act like they are 8 years old and do things just because someone says not to do them. Anyways, I bring this up because I truly believe that if she had remained active this entire time she would have challenged for a spot in the top 3. Top 5 is no schlub though, and she is going to a Colorado Raptors team who has a very ugly color scheme (sorry not sorry). As for her player Anastasia O’Koivu, she is a very strong defensive defenseman, who plays nothing like her mother. Pietra Volkova was a sniper with a very strong offensive presence. The only thing offensive about O’Koivu is that ugly jersey she’s wearing. O’Koivu is going to be a very strong stay at home defenseman, the type of player all teams need.
6.) Tyler Tougard
Username: Durden
Position: Right Wing
Shoots: Right
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 237 lbs
Player Type: Sniper
Durden is another member who has been around for a long time and also another member I’ve never really spoken to. He is well respected in the league however and I believe he has held several positions in the past. His bank account is significant with 28 mil stored up. Durden also did a ton of research on his mock and walked away with the most TPE of anyone on the site. His player Tyler Tougard is a right wing sniper who is already serviceable as a player in my opinion. Tougard has high defense for a young sniper and has very few weaknesses besides checking. Would love to see him get that puck handling and skating up, but overall a really great build so far and I’m sure he will preform well in the J.
7.) Borromini Cannellini
Username: ArGarBaGar
Position: Center
Shoots: Left
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 210 lbs
Player Type: Sniper
ArGar is a very well respected member of the community and has been for a very long time. I don’t speak with him much but I do usually peep the Top 100 Players he does every season and his bank account is freaking ridiculous with $118 million plus. It may be the largest bank account in the league, but it certainly is the biggest of this draft class. I was very surprised he fell this far because he is such a well known and respected member of the league with good player history and a crazy astronomically sized bank account, but he did. ArGar’s player Cannellini also has the highest single attribute we’ve seen yet with an 80 in scoring. His defense is great too but after that his attributes fall off and are kind of mediocre. Still ArGar will surely be a very good player in the SMJHL, the only question is how many seasons will he remain in the J.
8.) Jimmy Slothface
Username: slothfacekilla
Position: Right Wing
Shoots: Left
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 200 lbs
Player Type: Sniper
Slothfacekilla is relatively active in the rookie discord. I have had conversations with him, and I believe he will stay active but he is a first generation player so not a lot of history to tell about. His bank account is only $900k right now, but I’m not sure if that is up to date. He does have a really really cute dog though. That said his player Jimmy Slothface looks like he is on his way to a solid sniper build and career. He has a solid 70 scoring and skating. The only alarming thing about this build to me is he has 3 TPE in discipline. Boy if you don’t redistribute that shit. Keep taking build advice and stay active and you can be a great player.
9.) Eva Lykke Aparjode
Username: Jogurtaa
Position: Left Wing
Shoots: Right
Height: 6’3”
Weight: 190 lbs
Player Type: Offensive Forward
Jogurtaa is also someone I never have spoken to ever in my life but I know she (?) has been around for almost 5 years. I think she is part of the Latvian gang. What I do know is that she has $51 mil in the bank and a good head start on this class for TPE. As for her player Eva Lykke Aparjode has a very good balanced build even though it looks like she is going to be a shoot first forward. I will say that her endurance is her biggest weakness but if she is out there on the 3rd line this season it shouldn’t be a big deal.
10.) Jerry “The Snake” Mander
Useername: GCool
Position: Right Wing
Shoots: Right
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 245 lbs
Player Type: Power Forward
I was on Hamilton with GCool for a while there and he is a pretty chill guy, He was always decently active in discord even when he was beginning to grow bored with his player. He has also been around the SHL for a long time and has a 20 mil bank account. As for his player Jerry Mander, GCool has made another player who knows how to finish his check. He also seems to be a good scorer although his passing weakness is a rough one, if you want to be good at hitting you have to give up something else.
In the end the first round was filled with some surprises but mostly some great picks. I only got to the first round in time for the media bonus but I may do the others anyways and I may decide to highlight the 4th round so I can talk about myself. If you read this whole thing I want you to reply with your favorite color. It is an odd request but it would make me very happy. Also to my Detroit boys I may wait until mid-season to write up something on us because Finn already wrote something and I want to keep the content fresh. Thanks please like and subscribe and leave a comment below!
"I don’t think Zach has ever built a defenseman in an STHS league, but his starting build looks really great for an offensive defenseman."
I have a pass-first OFD in GOMHL. I built him basically to experiment ahead of SHL recreation. He's been decent if unspectacular, but it gave me a way to confirm some thoughts and disprove some others before creating Nikolai.
