S47 is about to kick off the season. Tonight, we’ve got the defending champs, St. Louis Scarecrows, who after defeating the Kelowna Knights in the finals last year, are at starting their third straight title defense. They are up against the Anaheim Outlaws, who lost out in the second round of the Four Star Cup playoffs last season. Can the Crows make it an un-precedented four Four Star Cups in a row, it all starts now…
1st period Both teams take the ice, they look hungry to start this season off right. The #1 lines for both teams take the ice for the opening face-off. Westbroek won the first faceoff of the season for the Outlaws. The Outlaws came out of the gates hard, and tested the Crows netminder Billy Sorokin with some decent shot attempts. Eight minutes into the 1st, the first goal was scored. It was by Nicolas Flemming of the Crows, the assists go to his linemates, Tougard and Wawazat. The versitale Crow, Fork Spoon, adds another goal a few minutes later to make it 2-0 Crows. Right after the Crows second goal, a hooking penalty is called against Corey Kennedy of the Outlaws. The Crows capalize on their first PP of the year with Tougard making it 3-0. Tough start for the Outlaws. 2nd Period An early highsticking call against the Crows has the Outlaws on the PP early. Sorokin is sharp in net and the score remains 3-0 after the Outlaws first PP. Another PP for the Outlaws, they really need to connect on this one if they want to get back in the game, but they fail to register a shot and not too long after the PP expires, Tougard tips in his second of the night, which was the last shot that starting goalie Tibuk Soonika will see. Michal Burzawa comes into the game in relief. Nicolas Flemming spoils Burzawa’s debut and puts the game out of reach with 5 minutes left to go in the 2nd, netting his second of the game, making the score 5-0 for the Scarecrows. 3rd Period The Outlaws take and early penalty, but kill it off nicely. They however find themselves in the sin bin a few minutes after, this time they are not so lucky. St. Louis defender Charlie Serpe cashes in on the Crows third powerplay of the game, giving them 2 PP goals on the night, and a commanding 6-0 lead. The Outlaws have two more opportunities with the man advantage, but they are not able to find the back of the net. The period ends, with Sorokin earninig a well deserved shut out, stopping all 29 shots he faced. The #1 forward line for the Crows dominated this game, with Flemming and Tougard both with 2 goals, and their linemate Wawazat (who before this game, demanded a trade for more playing time???) chipped in with 4 helpers. It was a great start to the season for the reigning champs, both on the defensive and offensive sides of the ice, the Outlaws on the other hand, are going to be looking for some answers after a disappointing opening night in St. Louis. ![]() ![]() 0 - GOALS - 6

Comment 1
Unsung Hero: With 4 assists in the game to start the season, Taisei-Tiikeri Wawazat put on a passing clinic. Using a combination of his fluid skating, silky puck handling, and amazing on ice vision he was able to dice up Anaheim’s defense with relative ease. Whether it was even strength or on the power play, every time Wawazat stepped on the ice he was dangerous and put the Outlaws on their heels. While his offensive contributions were certainly the focal point of the night, his defensive contribution was just as important. Logging the most penalty kill time of any forward for the Scarecrows, he was able to shut down any hopes of Anaheim getting back into the game. Comment 2 MVP: Nicolas Fleming potted two goals and added two assists to his stat line with a wonderful performance. Fleming only had two shots on goal all night and made the most of both of his chances placing each with precision. Half way through the second period, Anaheim tried to shake things up by going to their backup goaltender Michal Burzawa. Fleming wasn’t fazed, however, beating Burzawa for his second goal of the night late in the period. Fleming looks to continue the red hot start to the season with the top line that seemed to instantly click in the opener. He is poised to have a career season ahead of him and surely will be an MVP recipient more than this one instance. Comment 3 Key Factors/Stats: Tonight’s key factor was the impressiveness of St. Louis’ dominating special teams play. Multiple times in this game momentum was kept on their side as they killed penalties and buried power play goals with remarkable efficiency. Going two for three on the power play with both power play lines contributing while not allowing a single goal on four penalty kills is an absolute recipe for success. Being the first game of the season, you’d expect a team to perhaps have a bit of a slow start to their special teams play. That wasn’t the case tonight. Let’s look to see if the Scarecrows can continue the special teams success they put on display here tonight. ![]() Registered Posting Freak
EFFECTIVE SHOOTING AND POSSESSIONS
With a 6-0 blowout being registered in the opening game for the S47 season of the SMJHL, the Scarecrows made sure that they had the best possible opportunities taken in the game. They registered only 28 shots, 1 fewer than their opponents the Outlaws, yet they won the game by 6 goals. Taking high quality shots in a game count a lot, and thats indeed what they did. They were able to control the game, registering 3 of their 6 goals off of faceoff wins in the offensive zone, keeping the possession in Anaheim's end and eventually running a goaltender out of the net. ![]() Registered Senior Member
The Scarecrows really came out flying here. One of the top teams in the league and they showed it right from game one. This isn't to say the Outlaws got outplayed, as they had more shots than the Scarecrows. But when you have a goalie as good as Sorokin in net, you can get away with giving up a lot of shots. Generally in a 6-0 game you wouldn't really look at the goalie as the player of the game but I think in this circumstance it's warranted. Really good job by the 'Crows at spreading out the offence too, a few big games. Wawazat wasn't even named in the three stars but had four assists, huge game from him and definitely flew under the radar in this one.

Unsung heroes:
Charlie Serpe was the best player on the defensive side of the game. The Scarecrows offense destroyed the Outlaws but we are not giving much credit to their defense. Anaheim wasn't able to score a goal that night because Charlie Serpe and the defense were able to shut them down easily. He scored one goal and had 3 shots blocked. He was an important player on the penalty kill. Anaheim had four powerplays during game but they were not able to put the puck on the net. Charlie Serpe played for four minutes on the penalty and he didn't give any chance for the Outlaws's offense. ![]() ![]() Registered Senior Member
Brick Wall Alert
Man, this is just the first game of the season? Scarecrows goaltender Billy Sorokin is in mid-season form for this one. I mean, when you log a shutout in literally your first start in net of the year, what a confidence booster that has to be. It's not really like he had it easy in this one either. Anaheim logged twenty-nine shots on the Crows net minder and he managed to get in front of every single one. When you look at the final score, 6 - 0, he really didn't need to be as on his game as he was, but he really came out of the gates this season with an impressive start here. Unsung Hero In a game where one team wins by such a wide margin, it may be hard to pinpoint someone who is "unsung", but I think I did. That man is Basil Magnicotta, Scarecrows defenseman. His stat line certainly wasn't the flashiest, but he really had a rock solid game. Not only did he tally an assist on a second period goal by Nicholas Fleming, but he also blocked three shots and had a positive three plus - minus rating. That's a really great game from one of your defensemen, especially one who isn't on the top pairing. Getting that kind of performance from a guy who plays minutes on both the powerplay and the penalty kill is a boon that any team would be pleased by. The Science of Failure When you look at the game that the Anaheim Outlaws played in this one, there really isn't much good to say here. First, look at the goaltending situation that they had going for them. They played two goalies in this blowout and neither one of them was overly successful. Tibuk Soonika only saved 13 of 17 shots and then replacement Michal Burzawa only saved 9 of the 11 shots against him. Moving past the in net woes the Outlaws faced, they were also out hit by the Scarecrows 8 - 15. Literally the only place that Anaheim dominated the game was in the circle, where they won 46 faceoffs compared to just 29 for the Crows. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
