Hello, and Welcome to the first installment of Rookie Talks. There may not be another one. (also my first article)
Across from me today is Artem Mozgov, the 6’6” Russian giant of a Whaler. A rookie, Mozgov ended the regular season with eight goals, three assists and a solid twenty-five hits. Mozgov also enjoyed some playoff time clocking in an average of eight minutes a game and earning himself one goal and assist for the trouble. Hey Artem, Great to meet you! How's the league treating you? Hello there, thank you for having me. The league has been great, met a lot of great people this season and looking forward to taking the next step and get drafted by a pro team. How would you describe your first season? Did you set out any goals for yourself that you met? Any you failed to meet? “It went quick, we won a lot of games and the dressing room was fun to be part of and that's probably why it felt like I joined the team yesterday. I wanted to be on a winning team and was very successful with that, winning the Four-Star Cup, my second goal would be to complete enough TPE tasks to be considered a top pick and I was successful with that too. Didn't really have any big goals though, just wanted to play hockey and have fun and overall I had a blast.” Being part of the S48 Four Star Cup Champions must be an amazing feeling. What do you think was the key to your team's success? Why? “Amazing doesn't describe the feeling, I'm on cloud nine. Definitely our overall skill, the forward core was scary every time they dashed into the offensive zone, our defense could shut down a highway and the Braulin Wall frustrated the opposition every night. add in our depth players that stepped up when they were needed, and you got a recipe for a championship team.” I've been reading the reports, and I have to say, you have shown so great growth week to week. What's your secret? “Just continue to work on my game, daily. Rest isn't an option and if I want to see results, I have to put in time at the gym every time I get a chance” With the announcement of Arnost Holub's retiring from the Whalers, how do you think this will affect team morale? “It will only make it better, I know that might be odd and it's sad to see him go but he left a legacy nobody will forget. Learned a lot from him too and I'm going to be a better player because of it, he got me more involved can’t say enough good things about him.” What do you think of some of the S49 Draftees you've met in the Locker room? “I'll start things off with Jan Zacha, the guy is a beast, only player to put in more hours than me at the training facility and we haven't had many conversations due to both of our busy schedules and eating habits, laid back and nice though, I can see him doing big things in the SHL. Mikas Bieksa is smart and that's what will help him succeed, he knows how to play his position and doesn't take him long to learn a new play. My boy Jean-Paul Boivin is the funniest guy in the room, he plays the same and we get a lot of reps in together since we play the same position. Other rookies Lammi, Richard and Janorksson haven't really spoken much yet, they come to practice every day and I can respect that.” Last little thing here, (Hypothetical) Gun to your head, rank the teams you want to get drafted by: #1-#8 --> #9-#16 --> Good Stuff. I would like to thank you for your time, Mr. Mozgov, and that wraps it up for this installment of "Rookie Talks."
