Detroit Flies While Abioye Dies – The Struggles of Overhyped Blueliner Into Playoffs
#1

As the Detroit Falcons celebrate their breakout season, only one man seems to feel down about the situation. Ironically, it happens to be the most pleasant person in the locker room.

Offseason addition Izem Abioye, the Nigerian defenseman, said in a post-game presser that he “was extremely disappointed in the way [he’s] played this season”. The snake-bit D-man has put up a career low 6 points in 45 games, with a career-low +/- rating of 5. Though he’s made up for his lack of offense with career-year totals in hits [35 in 45] and blocked shots [41 in 45].

Abioye doesn’t seem to care. To him, said the defenseman, he’s let his team and his teammates, as well as the fan expectations down. Despite his personal struggles, Abioye added that he’s never been prouder of his teammates’ performance. The Falcons recently slipped back to 2nd in the league, back just a point behind the Kelowna Knights, but still hold a respectable 27-12-6 record, including an incredible 16-4-2 record at home in Detroit. Abioye hopes that the team can carry the good spirits and momentum into the playoffs, where hopefully, his luck can change.

Teammates have deliberated that, while his point totals may be disappointing, Abioye’s team spirit and well-natured wit keep any room he’s in light. Said team-points leader Savoli Tankovic; “Abby’s a great character guy, always laughing. A fun dude. Makes the whole team happier when he’s around.”

Abioye’s S49 season may be disconcerting to fans in Detroit, but take solace; Abioye has stated to Detroit and to his SHL team in West Kendall that he intends to stay another year with the Falcons. Here’s hoping he brings his A-game to the ice come next season.
