Well what do you know. Surprisingly the best team on the SMJHL by a landslide originates from Detroit. Yes, Detroit. The Detroit who brought you the McChicken Red Wings in the NHL and who proudly fields the glorious Lions in the NFL /s.
Now the Falcons however lead the league with a whooping 46-3-2, earning them 94 points, shadowing even Quebec's absolutely respectable scoreline of 37-11-6, 80 points who also are 3 games up on Detroit. This is even more impressive when you look at the Mayfield Division which the Falcons currently lead. Newfoundland actually is 3rd overall in the league with 75 points by now and even the Malamutes with 50 were still doing reasonably well. Only Anchorage kind of got the short end of the stick, earning them second-to-last place overall. Still, placing themselves on top of that Mayfield division, let alone first overall, was no piece of cake! But how? How can this team be that good and this more or less unbeatable colossus? Well look no further than to their offense. A tremendous 5.08 GF places them firmly at the top of the corresponding leaderboards and probably makes seasoned Goalies all over the SMHJL cry. These guys are fast and will absolutely spam you with accurate shots. Just look at their last games for reference: 8 goals against the Scarecrows 10 goals against the Kraken 5 against the Raptors, Citadelles, Timber and Battleborn (nearly all of them Top 5 teams aswell, I might add, three of those games were Away games, too) Actually they haven''t even lost an Away game in regular playtime, unreal. The only blunder here was losing against Colorado in their rematch at home, an uncharacterstic loss, perhaps exhaustion played a role there. However, after beating the Whalers in the game after, nothing leads me to belive, that there will be a break in their magnificient offensive games. Okay, you might say, best offense in the league, I can see why they dominate this hard...BUT THERE IS MORE. Not only do they have the best offense, they also have the 2nd best defense with just 1.98 GA. Such a one-two punch proves to be too much for the other teams to handle right now. With the Falcons entering the post-season with a comfortable scoreline I already pity the team that has to face them first. Overconfidence is a slow and insidous killer though, this is where they have to stay on their guard. If they can iron out the last kinks, which are there, like the recent loss vs Colorado demonstrated, they will be the team to beat for the trophy. And damn, you better park the bus in front of your goal vs these guys. I think I can confidently say that I would be shocked if Detroit doesn't bring home the trophy this year after this dominant regular season. Either them or the team that beats them will raise the cup, quote me on this. And maybe, maybe, this will be the year for Detroit. The lions are looking better now aswell and the Red Wings have some amazing prospects that developed fantastically. Happy times in Motor City for once? 551 words according to the site.
