The Citadelles are going all out for their opening night celebration against their expansion rivals, the Nevada Battleborn. Posters containing depictions of Owls beating up Rams could be seen all over town. It was easy to tell how excited Quebec City was for the season, the Citadelles looked to be one of the top teams in the SMJHL and had a great shot of bringing the cup back. The day of the game, the streets around the Videotron Centre were shut down in order to make room for a huge party. There was live music from a couple of local bands, and the best restaurants from across town set up shop to bring their best meals to the people there for opening night. A huge blue carpet was rolled out for the players as they arrived, giving out high fives and signing autographs for the fans. QCC branded buckets hats were handed out to everyone in attendance, and the Citadelles kicked off their season at home with an exciting 2-1 win over the Battleborn.

For the Regina Elk's opening night match against the Newfoundland Berserkers, the team had one hell of an opening show planned. The opening ceremony started off with a synchronised figure skating show where all of the skaters had purple and gold fireworks on the backs of their skates. The heat from the fireworks actually melted the ice a little bit - however, this was all planned, and it actually melted it in the shape of the Elk logo. Next up, a physical representation of every other SMJHL team was brought out onto the ice - a small wooden boat for the Armada, a dinosaur skull for the Raptors, a bear skin rug for the Grizzlies, a wooden log for the Timber, a battleaxe for the Berserkers, a dead fish for the Whalers, a dead octopus for the Kraken, a dead pigeon for the Falcons, a cosplay medieval helmet for the Knights, a RAM truck for the Battleborn, a Harry Potter owl plushie for the Citadelles, a scarecrow for the Scarecrows and a dog toy for the Malamutes. Then, a herd of elk was let out onto the ice. Their handlers did some matador shit to rile them up, and the elk were absolutely enraged. They stampeded all around the rink, stomping all over the other teams. Eventually they calmed down and were taken off the ice, and the match began immediately after (the other debris on the ice wasn't cleaned up until the second intermission)

As the puck drops to signal the start of season sixty six for the Texas Renegades, Andreas Kvalheim reflects upon the past and ponders what's to come for this upcoming year as he sits on the bench. This is the start of his twentieth season of professional hockey, and he has experienced all the highs and lows that sports can offer. He has seen his Texas Renegades navigate through a long rebuild, going from bottom feeder to multiple time Challenge Cup Champions, just to see the team implode again and fall back down to the bottom of the league. However, Andreas still has the desire to play, to go out onto the ice and help his team win games, no matter how futile that effort may be. The Renegades will likely make the playoffs this season; not through any spectacular effort on their part, but because teams below them are tanking even harder. One just hopes that the Renes manage to win a game or two in the post-season this time around.

Zoltan the grizzled old man playing for the Tampa Bay Barracuda is back at it again. Playing in what seems like his millionth season in the Simulation Hockey League, his career doesn't have that many more seasons. A regular mix of excitement and nervousness lingers in his thoughts as he steps back out onto the ice for yet another season. Coming off his best season ever, losing in game 6 in the challenge cup finals. Zoltan is ready to get back out there and give it his all once again. Leading the team wearing the large C (that stands for captain) on his sweater, Zoltan is committed to helping out the team the best that he knows how. Leading by example, his no quit attitude and outward love for the team. He has the loudest chomp in the room. The anxiety is always there, how can we do better. Shoot more, pass better, get that puck in the net. His heart has never beat faster.

Wow, it is finally time to have a real Buffalo stampede! Steve Harrington has been collecting buffalo for many years, and storing them in a remote ranch for safe keeping. Now it is finally time to bus them all in and see them hang out on the ice before the game! You're gonna see slippin and slidin buffalo, probably a lot of poop, probably a lot of pissed off staff. Probably gonna be some sort of legal mess. But you will never again see like 30 buffalo crowded onto a professional hockey rink! And for good reason! Maybe after everything is cleaned up and the game starts, one of the buffalo decides to return for an encore. We would have to make sure we took a skater off... dont want too many men on the ice. Imagine trying to shoot through a giant buffalo blocking the goal. Talk about a brick wall defense!

Leading up to a new season can always be a little nerve-wracking; trying to get your mindset ready for the long haul after taking some well-earned time off, but starting your rookie season is an entirely different ball game. Heading into the season opener was a lot of emotion, something I've worked for over these years and finally getting my shot on SHL ice. I'd say it was a healthy combination of anxiety and drive, wanting to get out there and perform immediately but knowing it wouldn't happen like that. I remember getting ready to head down the Patriotes tunnel for the first time and Darzins saw me trying to shake some nerves off beforehand; he gave me a huge pat on the back and said "just play the game, kid". That has stuck with me this past opening week and it was really just solid advice; trying not to be in your head too much and just play the game we all know how.

CERTIFIED THREAD KILLER
MONTREAL IMPACT FOREVER

With the opening of a new season the budget coffers are once again filled up in Philadelphia and what better way to celebrate that a grandiose waste of tax payer money! If they don't like it we will just relocate elsewhere. Seeing as Michael Bay is a fan favourite in Philly we will be doing a lord of the rings (specifically the mines of Moria, being forge like and all) crossed over with the Gladiator. Goblins and orcs wielding blacksmith hammers go to battle with various gladatorial creatures such as bears, lions and tigers sourced from the local Philadelphia zoo. After which Julius Maximus fights Gabdalf in an epic one on one battle to the death complete with Michael Bayified explosions, pyrotechnics and fireworks arranged in various places around the arena. It is sure to be an absolutely banging start to the new season and hopefully it's a sign of the turbocharged start to the season that the Forge is going to make.

Written Task: What incredible spectacle do you plan for your team's opening night? Fireworks? Live music? Live animals? Your only goal is to make the most exciting and memorable opening night you can. Go as crazy as you like, but try to incorporate at least some elements of your team's branding or culture! (150+ words)

Being the Atlanta Inferno, there's got to be fire. And lots of it. We wouldn't want A Song of Ice and Fire, so at the beginning of the spectacle a retractable floor moves into position above the ice, creating the platform for a stage. The lights are dimmed, so that it's almost pitch-black, before fire is (safely) shot into the air around the stage. A group of firebreathers ascend the steps to the stage, swirling fire as they light up the stadium. Dramatic music plays from the PA, filling the air with the intensity of the fire and the music. One by one, the names and numbers of the S65 Atlanta Inferno team are displayed on the big screen. As they are displayed on-screen, stage lights pick out the players on stage and fire shoots from the floor around them. The fans cheer wildly as each name is announced and as the Inferno players are displayed within the inferno. (160 words)

The first thing that Tommy Thompson's mind goes to as he waits for the anthems to end and the opening draw to start is the end of last season, when the Quebec City Citadelles fell in the playoffs to the Detroit Falcons. It was the second year in a row a powerful Quebec City team proved unable to claim an underdog win against a dominant opponent. For some fans, it was a sad reminder that the SMJHL had entered an era of superteams: but for Thomspon, it was a personal failing. No matter how many analysts say that the outcome was certain before the opening puck drop, and no matter how seemingly guaranteed the loss was, a player can't help but run through all those missed opportunities in their head.

An open net missed here, a poke-check gone awry there. What if you had of skated to the left to take the passer rather than trying to take the man with the puck? They always tell you to do that, but in the moment, it's easy to have a lapse in judgment. Thompson can't help but remember each and every mistake he made during that run, and as the first game rolls closer to starting, he swallows his annoyance and makes a silent pledge to himself not to make the same mistakes again.

Moments before the first puck drop of the season, Rylie Versi stands aside his teammates in Quebec. As the lights go down and the anthems begin playing, Versi gathers himself by reflecting on his past and what got him to where  he is now. He pictures his mother, who took him to his first hockey game and instilled in him a love for the game. He remembers his high school hockey team, and the friendships he made along the way. He also remembers the amount of work he put in to get to where he is today. He thinks of his Quebec teammates and how much they mean to him, and how they have helped him grow not only as a hockey player but also as a person.  As the lights come back on and the crowd begins to cheer, Rylie's mindset changes. This is his last year in Quebec and he wants to leave with a championship.
