Ask a GM: Part 18
#1

Yes folks, the much anticipated, highly exciting "ASK A GM" is back for it's 18th edition!

For the young ins out there, this works much like a regular press conference, but it entails the SHL as a whole, not just the Jets. This includes league rules, controversial events in the league, whatever your heart desires.

The rules are simple: I have to answer every question truthfully (which I always do in these things), but do not goat me into tampering because it won't happen jack.

Now, without further ado, commence...

I thought it was great and the people seemed to like it as well. It was a fun twist on free agency and definitely helped make it more exciting. It especially worked because you were open to whoever won it.

In fact, this season's free agent period was the best one in a long time. Usually it's filled with re-signings, but this season had genuine intrigue.

What's the reason behind having no Co-GM?

What is your strategy when building lines?

"...but do not goat me into tampering because it won't happen jack."

is gorlab tampering with jackcross?

Selfish ones. I like controlling my roster and doing my own lines. Some GMs like having a co-GM to help them with tasks I guess, but I never needed it. Not that I haven't gotten advice or scouting from my players because their opinions are important to me.

Balance, balance, balance.

Now that other GMs are starting to catch on to your line techniques and emulate the development cycles of your players do you have any tactics for staying ahead of the game?

Any amusing stories about contract negotiations during the off season?

You have always been the flagship GM of the SHL, a model of class and ability. You are a shrewd drafter, an excellent coach and have the hardware to prove both.

But, Jets after L4E?

Drafting the right players and looking more at player builds. There are a lot of high TPE players so there isn't as much difference between teams nowadays so having the right players is key. Gotta make sure they mesh well with each other.

Nothing too amusing actually. As you know I'm an easy negotiator with my players when it comes to contracts so I guess the closest to amusing I've gotten is when I accept my player's contract wants quickly and they get caught off guard. As for in free agency, with the few I've had, they've been more detailed and in depth as opposed to amusing.

I shudder at the thought. I just imagine ruin and destruction.

Seriously, though I do have 2 concerns when it comes to this.

1. The GM job becomes a revolving door. Lots of turnover in a franchise isn't good and if/when I step down, I'd want to see my Jets have consistency in the front office and not GM after GM.

2. The team getting relocated. The Jets started out in the SHL way back. The NHL Jets had been out of the league a long time and there was absolutely no sign of them coming back. I was drafted to the Jets, won cups with the Jets, and have never played for any other team but the Jets. I know the NHL Jets are back and some people find it weird/stupid that they exist here, but whenever I see the SHL Jets, I'm not reminded of the NHL Jets or even make a connection to them. To me, they are separate.

Speaking of high TPE, what are your thoughts on the current player development system we have in place? A lot has been done to cut down on Uncapped TPE through point tasks, but players who hit 1300 TPE is about to become a common place around the league. Would you propose any immediate changes?

So do I, the Jets in the SHL have always been the Jets in the SHL, helmed by Littleton and now Einstein (props on The Simpsons reference)

The revolving door in New England in the first few seasons after the Season 20 draft I can attribute solely to big miscommunications and it was unfortunate as it looked pretty bad. PB and Storm have been awesome though, so it's unlikely to happen again anytime soon. Having that reassurance is great as a player, so I imagine you'd feel bad leaving your players with anything but.

I think a lot of people would flip shit at the suggestion of the Jets being moved. I'd be one of them.

I think we've done a good job limiting the uncapped TPE. It only exists in the important tasks throughout the season now so that's a start. I think with the update scale there isn't much of a difference once you hit 900-1000, it's all about how you build the player. We're always going to have dedicated members who grab every available TPE, earn tons of money to train so I'm not sure what else you can do really. Increasing the update scale might turn away too many members which isn't something you want to do.

And we've heard as much from players in this league. Having stability at the most important position on a team is key to having success.

Interview Do you believe the sim is 'random' or is line-making and strategizing more important than people seem to think?

Interview Regina or Prince George?

Interview What would be your top 5 locations for potential expansion locations, if it was ever to be seriously proposed? (Not what you think the league would do, what cities would YOU like to see have an SHL fanchise?)
