Because the name is what a team is primarily identified by. It's way more important than a team's logo or the color scheme and even if the team you are copying is from another sport, I think it's still a problem and something that would be easy to avoid by just giving it some more thought. It would be different if it were just be some beer league team that shared this name but from what I see the mammoths are a professional and somewhat well-known team.
I'm not a graphics guy so I can't really comment on the logos, I know that lots of our logos are at least heavily inspired by real world ones and just have a color change or something, I'm not a fan of that either but I guess there's a reason why most of our graphics guys are doing it. And "other teams have done it too!" is not really a strong defense in the first place, people reguarly bring up that they have issues with the Jets & the Impact and the only reason we don't change it is because they have a rich history in this league.
Colorado Mammoths -> Denver Mammoths
In order to avoid any relation to the lacrosse team.
Montreal Impact -> Montreal anything but Impact or Habs or Canadiens
This was plain silly from the beginning, I feel like we probably should've put a stop to it when we noticed the original logo was literally the MLS team's logo but instead of a soccer ball it had a puck.
Winnipeg Jets
Keep the name, the logo is very different, our SHL team has actually been around longer. Our incarnation was brought to life before the current Jets were. No issue here.
Portland Admirals
I see no issue with using a defunct team name and drawing inspiration off the logo. Keep it.

The blizzard took a teams name and logo, The Dragons took a teams name and logo, the Admirals, ect.. Would changing the name to Denver Mammoths make you happy?

Well the team that the logo is based off of was from Virginia :lol: So it wasn't about basing it off a defunct team, just the logo was altered from them. (like how the Blizzard are based off the Alaska Aces or something like). The name was in place before the new logo
Sarcasm. To rename them would be silly. If we were a major money making corporation we would probably be getting sued so hard everyone that has held a job within the league at any level would probably pay settlement money the rest of their lives.
But we're not. We're a fantasy hockey league. Lets keep it that way.
At the same time, lets not be idiots about it either. AKA the original Impact logo, aka the original Panthers logo. Don't rip off a huge team known to a lot of people.
Lets stick to using defunct/original/re-imagined logos and names.

I'm not gonna lie I actually like the name Colorado Mammoths name a little more too, but for me the fact that there already is a team of that name just disqualifies it. Maybe for some people that's not really important but I just think it would be better to avoid these problems from the start, when it is still easy to look for alternatives.
