Early FA Rankings for Benson
#1

Previously we talked about how David Benson is a possible Free Agent candidate this upcoming offseason. We also mentioned in our next release we'd talk about possible destinations for the right winger. So we have taken all fourteen teams (including Toronto of course) and put them into three categories: Very Likely, Somewhat Likely and Not Likely. For the teams that fall into the Not Likely category it's more the fact that there had to be somebody there and there's just nothing currently swaying me to consider it. Closer to offseason of course this can easily change as there is currently no team I won't consider. This is not a 1-14 ranking system, just sorted into three categories. Come playoff time I will likely re-release this into actual rankings. Reasoning for each team is listed.

HIGHLY LIKELY:

Stars TORONTO NORTH STARS Stars
There's no bad blood between Benson and management in Toronto and it's very possible he doesn't leave the city. While his ice-time will always take a hit on this roster there's no denying the team atmosphere is excellent and it's becoming a winning culture. Depending on his asking price come offseason though it could be likely Toronto won't have the finances to retain him.

Platoon WEST KENDALL PLATOON Platoon
This one is surprising but at the same time it isn't. The Platoon are easily Toronto's #1 Conference Rival and it would be heartbreaking to lose another player to them. However, Benson has more friends than enemies in WK and would fit in nicely. His undeniable chemistry with close friend Ales Smirnov would go a long ways and previous Kelowna teammates Slappy McDoodle and Dr. Timeturner Whooves as well. They have a well respected management team as well. The Platoon roster is pretty loaded right now and it would be interesting to see how Benson would fit in there.

Blizzard EDMONTON BLIZZARD Blizzard
Benson's former SMJHL General Manager is now in Edmonton and that's an argument enough to convince people this is a good destination for him. Good relationships as well with guys like andybj, Lunaro, Kel, wikiplaysgames etc also helps.

Panthers LOS ANGELES PANTHERS Panthers
Again this comes down to relationships and respect for certain players. While LA isn't currently looked at as a cup contender they aren't far away from being one and Benson could be one of those puzzle pieces. He has a great history with Valterri Bottas and a lot of respect for Wastlund. Also former linemates in Kelowna with Tanner Carter. Guys like ragnar, ems, r1c3 and former swede Skarsgaard make this attractive.

Renegades TEXAS RENEGADES Renegades
General Manager Deener hasn't hidden the fact that he has always wanted Benson on this team as the two have been friends for a very long time. Texas would be a great fit and Benson would become teammates with former draftee Asbjorn Alexandersen. The LR would certainly be interesting to say the least and the team will no doubt contend. Texas will certainly have Benson at the top of their list this offseason.

SOMEWHAT LIKELY:

Riot SEATTLE RIOT Riot
This is a destination that doesn't belong in this category but isn't quite yet in the above category. Seattle is an attractive city and the team colours are tremendous. Also while Benson has never played with star winger Sean Leonidas they have a great relationship and were both former Knights. The biggest thing that puts them on this list is that Benson doesn't have a lot of familiarity with the management or most of the players on the team outside of Leonidas and former SMJHL teammates Pavel Bursyuk and Ivar Ogorodnikov.

Chiefs MINNESOTA CHIEFS Chiefs
Chiefs barely make this list but the fact that they have some solid young players on their roster mixed with some experienced vets makes them a bit attractive. Benson was teammates and draft mates with defensemen Viktor Svensson and seeing guys like Merica and stevo on there helps as well.

Wolfpack NEW ENGLAND WOLFPACK Wolfpack
The Wolfpack can definitely contend for a few seasons and have some solid repcected names on their team. Management is good as well. TNGO, lil, Baelor, prettyburn, storm, nuck etc. makes this seem like a fun group of people to share a LR with. The only knocks they get is being in the same conference, being in New England and may not have too much roster depth.

:admirals: PORTLAND ADMIRALS :admirals:
Portland is more likely than one would originally assume. There's roster space and a good core of guys already in place. While they're far from being contenders, Benson could see a lot of ice-time and has a bit of familiarity with some players. He's been teammates with both Beau Ballard and Hans Ponsen in the past

Jets WINNIPEG JETS Jets
The Jets have a lot of well respected members and the league's longest serving GM. They are always contenders and you can't go wrong playing for them. While Benson doesn't have a lot of familiarity with the bulk of the members there's no denying they're a good group of guys to play with. The locker room I would assume would be lively. The city however is dull and extremely cold, everyone knows Benson likes excitement.

NOT LIKELY:

Stampede BUFFALO STAMPEDE Stampede
While I love the look of this franchise: jersey, logos, colours etc. I don't see anyone for the most part on this roster that would attract Benson to come here. Also it is likely that Benson favours those in the Western Conference for a change of scenery. Buffalo isn't an attractive city as a destination right now.

Steelhawks HAMILTON STEELHAWKS Steelhawks
Again this ends up a lot like Buffalo. It's also hard to imagine Benson leaving Toronto to go play down the road essentially for a rival. I have respect for a few guys on this roster but again don't know a lot of names.

Rage MANHATTAN RAGE Rage
Looking at the roster of Manhattan they don't seem poised to contend in the next few seasons and that is definitely something Benson will want to continue doing. There are some guys on this roster he has some familiarity with which helps but ultimately it's tough to see him going here.

Dragons CALGARY DRAGONS Dragons
Calgary isn't too far-fetched to think about but there aren't any convincing arguments to be made. While they have a talented roster it's hard to imagine where Benson might fit in, he could make a good replacement for McZehrl is he were to leave Calgary.

So there you have it. That puts a mark on the David Benson saga and for now we leave it as...to be continued!

Understandable. As much as I appreciate you as a person, we don't really have room for you anyway :(

Best of luck wherever you end up, though!

Glad to see the Chiefs as a possible destination, even if not an ideal one.
