With the prospect showcase well under way and the draft order decided, I thought this would be a good time for a bit of a media scrum. Any and all questions from GMs and fellow players alike are welcome!

Who is one fellow S29 SMJHL prospect who has impressed you so far?

My honest and admittedly biased opinion would be Darryl Landry. He joined the tournament at the last minute but he has managed to be an impact player and a power play specialist for his team. He has a clear understanding of his strength, weaknesses and how he would like to grow as a player. He plays a strong two way game and is just as efficient in keeping the puck out of his net as he is putting them in. He may be flying under some GMs Radars, but I think he would be a valuable pickup for any team come draft day.

What would you consider a successful rookie season?

Being a rookie means that there are a lot of players out there with much more experience than me. I think that first and foremost I need to be able to learn from those who have been there and done that. I would consider my rookie season successful if at the end of the season I can use the guidance and tutelage provided by my team and management to improve my game as well as my teammates. This means having the knowledge to make the best available play to contribute to my teamâ€™s success. Getting a ton of points would obviously be nice, but getting a ton of Ws would be nicer.

Do you think youâ€™re going first round?

The short answer: Yes. I think my commitment and skill will be recognized by SMJHL GMs.

Are there any teams that stand out to you? Where do you want to play in the SMJHL?

To be perfectly honest, I would be happy to play for any team in the SMJHL. Obviously the coveted first overall held by Kelowna is my ultimate goal. That being said, they arenâ€™t the only stand out teams on my list. I do apologize for keeping this response vague. I would rather bite my tongue at the moment than regret saying the wrong thing about the wrong team come draft day.

What are your goals for year 1?

This ties in to one of the previous questions. While I have described my â€œsuccessfulâ€ season, I do have some concrete goals. First would be to solidify a position in the top 6 of my team. I want and can be an impact player and I intend to take every opportunity to prove it. Second would be to finish in the top 4 of team scoring. Again, this ties in to proving my effectiveness as an impact player. Last but not least, make the playoffs. Itâ€™s nice to be a great player, but even nicer to have a great team.

How do you want to build your player?

I want to be a strong, defensively reliable playmaking forward. Creating open ice to make a play with strong skating and puck handling would be the foundation of my game. I want to be able to differentiate good play opportunities from bad ones. This means making the right pass at the right time, skating up with the puck when room is available and making safe plays in the defensive zone.

What kind of legacy do you want to have?

I like this question. It really isnâ€™t something you think of until youâ€™re asked. When my career is done and all thatâ€™s left is a (hopefully) massive highlight reel, I want people to recognize my team first mentality on and off the ice. I want to be the player that made his teammates better and kept the locker room light. Itâ€™s nice to be remembered and appreciated by the fans, but getting the same recognition from my teammates would mean to world to me.

Which areas of your game, if any, could you improve on?

My game isnâ€™t perfect and I think there will always be room for improvement. I want to get a little stronger to help give me the edge a little more in the faceoff dot. I would also like to improve on my scoring a little bit. While passing will remain my priority, I think I and my team would benefit from a slightly more accurate shot, if not only to create more rebounds (best pass in hockey! Wink

What do you think of the prospect showcase? How do you feel youâ€™ve performed?

The prospect showcase has been a blast so far! Iâ€™m thrilled and honored to be playing amongst the best in my draft class. In terms of my performance, I really canâ€™t be disappointed. I believe that I have successfully showcased my ability to put up points and play my game. I have also managed to stay competitive in the faceoff circle which is very important to drive possession. With two games left in the books, Iâ€™m looking forward to seeing how far the Stingrays can make it!

Is there anyone you model your game after?

Iâ€™m a huge fan of Mark Stone. He is exactly the kind of defensively reliable, team first playmaker I want to be. He sees the ice better than most and can fit anywhere in the lineup. He makes his teammates better every shift and gives his all 82 games a season.

The season can be long and off season even longer, so what is going to keep you motivated and active?

This honestly has not been a concern for me at all. Hockey is my passion and Iâ€™m always looking for ways to be more involved in hockey based communities. I fully intend on writing articles which will help the activity. I would also be very interested in taking up a management position with a team in the future. I have the time, knowledge and drive to be an integral part of a management team and I would undoubtedly let such a position consume my free time.

What does being a teammate mean to you?

I think being a teammate means a lot of things both on and off the ice. Obviously on the ice it would mean playing your position and role and trusting that your line mates will do the same. It also means recognizing your strengths and weaknesses as not to overstep your boundaries. Off the ice itâ€™s simply being an upstanding guy, keeping the conversation going and keeping spirits high. Itâ€™s important to stay positive even when things may not be going the greatest. Negativity spreads like wildfire and no one wants to be in a negative locker room.
