S29 Regular Season PGS Thread
#31

Welcome back to Sports Net live, where we have just watch a thrilling game, the 52nd game of the SMJHL season, between the St. Louis Scarecrows and the Kelowna Knights, where the Scarecrows edged the Knights, 4-3, in a shootout. For those that are just tuning in now, lets give you some highlights…

Synopsis/Highlights

The class of the SMJHL, two powerhouse teams like this can have epic battles to watch and this contest was definitely that. Kelowna comes into the contest leading their division, while the Scarecrows come in the same position, leading their own division. The two teams have played each other 5 times in a short span, with the Scarecrows winning 3 of those contests to the Knights two. Will the Knight be able to even the season series or will the Scarecrows be able to double up on the Knights?

One interesting thing to watch for tonight, is that both teams have put their back-up goalies in for this contest. It will be both net minders first start of the season, Kasper Haapanen for the Scarecrows and Max Smith-Frey for the Knights.

Let’s get to the action…

1st Period:

Though the period involves a lot of back and forth action, the main issue was the Scarecrows got into penalty trouble early and often:

“Back on the power play, the Knights Dominique, who already has a goal on the power play tonight, wins the faceoff in the Scarecrows end, back to the point to Justice, who moves the puck straddling the blue line, down to Leier who goes behind the net…the Scarecrow defenders both go for him, leaving Dominique wide open! Leier passes it out front, Dominique shoots…… Goal GOAL Goal !!! His second of the night, both on the power play and the Knights retake the lead, 2-1”

<div align="center">[Image: 7249b6941a7944a85ac799831f81af73.jpg]</div>

Luckily for the Scarecrows they were able to tie it up, 2-2 before the end of the period, but if they hadn’t taken some needless penalties they could have been up by 2 and in the driver seat going into the second period.

2nd Period:

It was evident the Knights smelled blood in the water because they came out with a frenzy dominating the shocked Scarecrows. The clinic the Knights put on was amazing and if it wasn’t for Haapanen standing on his head, this would be a very different game. The only costly flaw for the Knights in this period was a tripping penalty by star player Mikko Linna. We pick it up with the Scarecrows on the power play.

“The Scarecrows come out of their zone, setting up the play, but Bill Pickle is being harassed by Talo, so he takes it back into his zone as Talo and the Knights go for a change. Pickle see’s a streaking Feist and passes it to center ice, Feist comes steaming into the Knights zone…. Strange trying to catch up on the other side!! Feist drives to the corner giving Strange more time before passing it in front…. Strange tips it! Goal GOAL Goal !!! With only their 4th shot of the period the Scarecrows take the lead 3-2!”

<div align="center">[Image: hossa100th.gif]</div>

The Scarecrows owe Haapanen a beer after being out shot 13-4 in the period and with a lead heading into the third. Hopefully the Scarecrows can regain some composure and finish this game out.

3rd Period:

I’m not sure where the Scarecrows are right now, but it definitely isn’t in this game, as the Knights continued to pour it on, even more then the second period and the Scarecrows have no bounce back. It is like the Knights are playing a pee-wee team out here, it’s almost embarrassing.

Once again, the Knight are on the power play, their 7th of the night…

“In the Scarecrows zone, Haapanen already has faced 40 shots this game, but here we go again, another PK for the Scarecrows. Leier with the puck in the right corner, moving up and down the side, as the Scarecrows form the box. Leier moves down to the corner, and passes far side to Landvik, but Strange jumps up quickly and checks Landvik…but whats this, Strange falls to the ground, it looks like he’s lost a blade on one of his skates….Landvik moves it out of the corner to Shirobokov, who shoots top corner! Goal GOAL Goal !!! The Knights have tied it up, 3-3, with just minutes left in the game."

<div align="center">[Image: please_shoot.0.gif]</div>

That’s right folks, we are heading to OT and potentially a shootout, however at the end of regulation, the shots on net are: Kelowna: 44, St. Louis: 20.

OT/Shootout:

Overtime resolves nothing as there wasn’t a lot of opportunity, with Kelowna having a 2-1 shot advantage, so now we head to the shootout!

Code:
Penalty Shot by Mikael Talo for Kelowna Knights - Stopped by Kasper Haapanen
Penalty Shot by Eugene Feist for St. Louis Scarecrows -  Goal!
Penalty Shot by Dieter Dominique for Kelowna Knights - Shot Misses the Net
Penalty Shot by Alexander Charlyb'y for St. Louis Scarecrows -  Goal!

<div align="center">[Image: 1p0kF6P.gif]</div>

SCARECROWS WIN! SCARECROWS WIN! FEIST AND CHARLYB’Y BOTH SCORE IN THE SHOOTOUT!!!

Individual Player Stat Breakdown

This was a hard fought game, that honestly the Scarecrows shouldn’t have won, but lets compare the top lines to see if this dominating play was as evident, or if it was the Knights secondary lines that dominated.

Scarecrows:

Eugene Feist (Center) – 1 assist, +/- 0, 2 PIM, 2 Shots, 2 Hits and 18/28 (64.28%) in the dot
Harry Hans (RW) – +/- 0, 1 hit
Sebastian Strange (LW) – 1 goal, +/- 0, 4 PIM, 6 Shots, 1 Hit, 1 Shot Block
Totals: 1 goals, 1 assists, +/-0, 6 PIM, 8 shots, 3 hits and 1 Shot Block in addition to being 64% in the face offs

Knights:

Mikael Talo (Center) - +/- 0, 9 Shots, 1 Hit, 1 Shot Block and 11/33 in the face off dot (33%)
Mikko Linna (RW) – +/-0, 2 PIM, 6 Shots, 1 Hit
Anatoly Yanovich (LW) - +/- 0, 5 Shots and 3 Hits
Totals: +/-0, 20 Shots, 2 PIM, 5 Hits and 1 Shot Block in addition to being 33% in the faceoff circle

It is evident by the breakdown that the Knights top line had a heck of a game (20 shots), but just couldn’t get it past a hot net minder in Haapanen, you add the 6 minutes of penalties to the Scarecrows top line (3 of the 8 penalties they took), that means less opportunity to push back.

In the end it just comes down to an undisciplined Scarecrows team that relied too much on their goalie tonight for a victory, but luckily for them he stood tall.

To me this is the key to the game.

Most Valuable Player

You might think I would pick a Knight player for their dominance, or perhaps the shootout winner as tonight’s MVP, but you would be wrong, because tonights MVP is none other then St. Louis Scarecrows goalie Kasper Haapanen.

In his first every SMJHL game he faced 46 shots, 43 saves in that process for a sparkling .935 save percentage and for whatever reason wasn’t named a star in tonight’s game.

We all know Casey Holmes is the starter for the Scarecrows, but if this game is any indication of what the Scarecrows have for the future, it definitely looks good.

Welcome back to Sports Net live, where we have just watched an entertaining contest, the 57th game of the SMJHL season, between the St. Louis Scarecrows and the Detroit Falcons, where the Scarecrows overcame the Falcons, 5-3, even though they were outshot again, 32-21. For those that are just tuning in now, lets give you some highlights…

Synopsis/Highlights

This is the battle for the East Division, Detroit has been making a surge lately up the standings and this should be an extremely interesting contest, or at least a barometer of where Detroit is, when it comes to the powerhouse St. Louis Scarecrows, who currently sit at the top of the Eastern Division.

This is also Kasper Haapanen’s 2nd game in net, and if it is anything like his 43 save performance against Kelowna just a couple nights ago, then Detroit could be in for a rough night.

Let’s get to the action…

1st Period:

Both teams are defensive to start the game, with a lot of the plays being broken up in the neutral zone with not as many quality shots on either goalie, however that being said Detroit starter Sivy McSieve has looked shaky, allowing already 2 goals on 7 shots, alteast one he should have had, so we take you too about 3 minutes left in the period and the Scarecrows up 2-1:

“The Scarecrows are pinned in their own zone, but Feist, along the boards wrestles the puck free from Sarone, who has the lone Detroit goal tonight and passes it to Strange. Strange takes it through the neutral zone, and gets leveled by Sarone! That’s gonna leave a mark tomorrow. Luckily the puck squirts to Foster who skates it into the Falcons zone, fakes a shot and passes to Hans, who shoots…. Goal GOAL Goal !! Harry Hans with his second tonight and the Scarecrows are up 3-1 on only 8 shots.”

<div align="center">[Image: KcM5gAO.gif]</div>

Jari Ohvo the Detroit back-up just had a conversation with the coach…. I don’t think McSieve has much more wiggle room, even though you can’t blame him for the last one. We’ll keep you posted as things change, perhaps a new goalie will start the 2nd period.

2nd Period:

McSieve is still in net to start the second period and the Falcons definitely play more physical and dictate the play, much like Kelowna did to the Scarecrows a couple night again, however, once again, Haapanen is playing another strong game for the Scarecrows. Let’s take you to the one mistake Detroit made, which was taking a penalty (Edvins Berzins), so the Scarecrows are on the power play.

“The Scarecrows have their #1 unit on the ice, Feist wins the drawn back to Landry, over to Rivet, back to Landry, he looks like he going to wind up…no, pass to Strange. Strange cycles the puck to Feist behind the net, over to Hans, he Shoot! SAVE by McSieve, but a juicy rebound goes to Strange! Strange winds up, the Falcon defenders go down to block the shot!! WAIT! Strange slap passes it to Hans, off is skate, he controls it and shoots!! Goal GOAL Goal !!!! HARRY HANS with the HAT TRICK!! The Scarecrows are now up 4-1”

<div align="center">[Image: hawksg3.gif]</div>

That’s the end of McSieve’s night as Ohvo is coming in, McSieve had 11 saves on 15 shots and it seems like the coach wants to light a spark under his team and hopes this will do it, as time is running out.

<div align="center">[Image: goodbye.gif]</div>

3rd Period:

Detroit did not disappoint, as they continued to dominate the Scarecrows in play, however, unlike the second period they actually were getting to Haapanen, having already scored one, narrowing the lead to 4-2, we catch the play with them in the Scarecrows end.

“The second line is applying some pressure to the Scarecrows in the own end and have them running around. Sarone in the corner, Rogers is all over him, puck is pinned under the skates and Pickle comes over and digs it free, out to Belfour who gets to center ice and dumps it in the Detroit Zone. Daniel James picks it up behind the net, as the Scarecrows go for a change. James outlays a pass, but it bounces off a Scarecrows player right to Hippo…all alone…. he shoots!! Goal GOAL Goal !!! Hippo gets Detroit that much closer, 4-3 with 8 minutes to go!"

<div align="center">[Image: GrimyNearBarnswallow.gif]</div>

Unfortunately it wouldn’t be enough, as Harry Hans scored his 4th of the night with under a minute to go, to put the Scarecrows up for good, 5-3. Ohvo stopped 5 of the 6 shots he faced after relieving McSieve in the 2nd period.

Individual Player Stat Breakdown

That got a little close in the end, as once again the Scarecrows were outshot, but relieved on good goaltending to pull them through. Let’s compare the goalies to see how much of a difference good goaltending can make.

Scarecrows:

Kasper Haapanen’s - 29 saves from 32 shots - (0.906 Sv %)

Falcons:

Sivy McSieve - 11 saves from 15 shots – (0.733 Sv %)
Jari Ohvo - 5 saves from 6 shots – (0.833 Sv %)

It is clear by looking at the numbers that even though Detroit outshot the Scarecrows 32-21, they didn’t get much support on the back end tonight, specifically from their goalie tandem. Now Haapanen, wasn’t as spectacular as he was against Kelowna, but he kept his team in the game and with the Scarecrows high powered offense, being ok, was good enough.

To me this is the key to the game.

Most Valuable Player

This is likely one of the easiest MVP choices we have made so far on Sport Net Live, and without a doubt to anyone it is none other then 4 goal scorer Harry Hans.

With only 5 shots on net, 4 of then found the twine, which is simply amazing, this guy is having a heck of a season and is showing Seattle fans why they should be excited their team drafted this stud. Hans also had one hit in just over 21 minutes’ time on ice.

The only drawback from Harry’s performance was that he was a +/- 0 on the night, which means he was on the ice for all 3 Falcons goals, which isn’t ideal, but we all know even the veterans have stuff to work on, otherwise they would be in the SHL.

Congratulations to the Scarecrows on the win and Harry Hans on his 4 goals!

<div align="center">Knights VS. Whalers</div>
<div align="center">Game 17</div>

In Kelowna and Vancouver's first meeting of the season, the two teams clashed together in the renowned Battle of B.C. Both teams fought hard, but defensively excelled as only 21 shots were registered for the Whalers, and only 14 shots for the Knights. Laukkanen held strong however, backstopping the Knights to a 3-1 victory.

Starting line ups for the night

Kelowna Knights

Anatoly Yanovich - Mikael Talo - Mikko Linna
Beau Bent - Dieter Dominique - Nicholas Leier
Sven Bartok - Kyle LeBlanc - Denis Lever
Aronne Zamloch - Janis Mazmiesis - Lenard Ramsey

Mia Landvik - Ty Justice
Cara Hohenberg - Fedor Shirobokov
Dolph Ziggler - Bernard Frederic

Mikke Laukkanen

Vancouver Whalers

Diego Ramirez - Charlie Conway - Zach Zyvleski
Patrick Kilgore - Jon Ross - Conklin Owen
Bernie Sanders - Levi Kuvrak - Strawberry Blake
Lars Dahlstrom - Winston Porter - Thor Pederson

Alfred Holoday - Theodore Graham
Carl Farris - Pablo Biznette
Alessandro Fondente - Brandon Makarov

Triforce Link

In the first period of the game, no goals were scored but both teams wasted no time getting physical and rough. We seen Fedor Shirobokov take a roughing penalty and Justice and Ziggler take a couple frustration tripping penalties. Jon Ross, however was looking to get on the board early with a couple memorizing chances just 20 seconds into the game.

Zyvleski picks up the puck in the neutral zone, skates it in and he SHOOTS! It misses the net but Alfred Holiday's right on the doorstep to get the rebound, Holiday picks it up, shoots! Another missed net! The Knights are frantically trying to regain control of the puck, but Jon Ross quickly gains possession, skates it in front, shoots it in net, OH what a save by Laukkanen! He deflects the puck away with his pad and the Knights successfully break it out of the zone!

The second period was mildly uneventful as well, except the Knights were able to get on the board late, with just 1:48 left in the period.

Mikael Talo is taking the faceoff in the neutral zone, opposite Jon Ross. Talo swiftly wins it back to Frederic who skates it in. Frederic's waiting.. He's waiting... Oh he catches Linna open on the wing, he dishes it to him, Linna picks it up, he shoots! He Goal SCOOOOORES! Goal What a pass by Frederic, and what a finish as well!

In the third period, both teams turned their play up a couple notches. We seen both Vancouver and Kelowna players come out bringing a heated, fast game. Vancouver had trouble staying out of the box however, which led to Kelowna making it a 3-0 game, putting the win out of reach for the Whalers.

Theodore Graham rings the puck into the Knights' zone, just to knock some time off the powerplay clock. Shirobokov retrieves it, and stalls behind the net for a couple seconds just to weigh his options. He skates it up into the neutral zone, head up looking for a teammate and he sees Dieter Dominique on the wing, so he sends it over with a gorgeous saucer pass. Dominique skates it open, notices the Whalers defender pinching towards him so he sends it back to the middle to Shirobokov who skates it into the zone and posts up at the point waiting for the Knights to get into position. Shirobokov feeds it to Leier who's open at the top of the circle, and he shoots! And it's blocked by Graham! Cara Hohenberg picks up the loose puck in front, shoots! Goal SCOOOOORES! Goal What a great heads up play by Hohenberg! Leier and Shirobokov will pick up the assists!

After being down 3-0 with less than half the period to go, the Whalers weren't going to bow down. The Whalers second line came through heavy for them, with just over three minutes left in the game.

Ziggler takes the puck, and skates it into the Whalers zone. He feeds a pass through the middle of the ice and Fondente picks it off! He's coming down the ice, feeds a quick pass to Brandon Makarov who then feeds it to Jon Ross who's buzzing down the middle! Ross fumbles it, and Frederic gets it back and dishes the puck over to Ziggler. Ziggler skates in the puck, rings it around the boards hoping one of his forwards picks it up down low, but Fondente picks it off again! Fondente skates the puck up the ice, feeds it to Conklin who speeds down the middle and into the Knights zone. Conklin wires it to the net, Goal SCORES! Goal What a tip in by Patrick Kilgore who makes it a 3-1 game! Conklin Owen and Alessandro Fondente pick up the helpers!

That would turn out to be the final goal of the game, the Kelowna Knights picking up a 3-1 victory over the Whalers.

POST GAME INTERVIEW WITH Ty Justice!

"Hey Ty, great game out there I'm sure it feels great to pull a win in the Battle of B.C, what sort of things was coach saying in the locker room before you guys went out there and battled hard in the third period?"

"Yeah he was just telling us we had to relax. We were taking some bad penalties out there, so we just wanted to come out in the third and play the game we're good at. We weren't going to get too antsy or frustrated, and we did a great job staying out of the box."

"What was what you felt to be the turning point in the game for you guys?"

"Definitely when we started drawing some penalties in the third, we started to feel confident in our abilities again and it really translated. We stayed calm and collected, and the puck just started to go our way. Funny how that works, heh."

"What are your thoughts on the Battle of B.C so far?"

"I don't try too hard to get too invested in the hard emotional battles, I try to stay cool headed so I can play with a clear mind. I know how into it the fans get though, so these games always feel like must-wins. Not like every game doesn't, but you know... There's just more of an edge there."

Let's take a minute to acknowledge our Unsung Hero of the Game, brought to you by SMJHL Today.

Cara Hohenberg, from the Kelowna Knights had a fast paced, meat and potatoes game. She scored the goal that made the game 3-0, and really iced the game there. But scoring a goal is not what separated her from the rest, it's the way she held strong as the team depended on her to play a whopping 20:48, the fourth most ice time this game on the Knights beside Linna, Landvik and Justice. She registered three shots and managed to block two herself, showing that she isn't afraid to sacrifice the body to keep the team in the game. She also spent 5:40 on the penalty kill, so when the team depended on her the most she delivered.

In the two former instances of S29: A Look Back post game show, we covered games which have come in the midst of contrasting season series... one in which the Whalers had has little success, and one in which the Whalers had been dominant. Today's iteration, is of the former variety, for better or worse- as we took to battle against the Kelowna Knights in game 97... but the outcome was certainly for the better in the end.

The History

This particular match up would be the 6th meeting between these two squads, with Kelowna taking all of the previous 5. 4 of which came in regulation with the Whalers best effort coming in an overtime loss. The Whalers' negative goal differential in the series came in at 8-17, so they'd really struggled to even stay close in the previous games. In 3 of the 5 games they were held to 1 goal or less, so breaking the Knights' defense was critical. Certainly there must be a mental aspect to going into a game against a team whose beaten you 5 consecutive times... So it was on the leadership of the team to keep the collective attitude of the bunch focused come game time, if they hoped to garner their first win.

Highlights and Key Points
Period 1: 0:46 - Penalty to VAN
The Whalers opted to take a page out of the Firebirds' playbook early in the game: When you've historically been bested by a team; abandon discipline, get physical early, try and set the tone while surviving the PK if needed. Well, that unit was called upon early, as Charlie Conway gave a hard slash that caught the ire of the refs. He was sent to the sin bin in short order, and the PP unit for Kelowna stepped onto the ice.

<center>[Image: ovi1.0.gif]
Conway gets rowdy early, and the Whaler's 4th ranked PK unit was on the ice in no time</center>

Period 1: 2:23 - Goal by KEL
Just when it appeared the power play opportunity had been weathered, with :23 remaining, rookie Nicholas Leier would celebrate his second power play goal on the season, netting with assists to both Dolph Ziggler and Dieter Dominique. The Whalers had been hemmed in their own zone, with the Knights able to put up 4 shots (2 on net) in quick succession, the last of which finding its home in the back of the net.
<center>[Image: Minnesota-Boston004.jpg?w=662]
Kelowna was on the board early, as rookie RW Leier put in the PP goal, his 2nd on the year</center>

Period 1: 2:49 - Penalty by KEL
Eager to match physicality with the Whalers, the Knights chalked up a penalty of their own when Sven Bartok hooked Brandon Makarov moments after Marakov had intercepted a Justs Sirmais pass in the Whalers' defensive zone. As a Knights fan, you never want to see a penalty like that in the opposing teams' zone, where one must question if it's entirely necessary.

Period 1: 4:27 Goal by VAN
After an icing, the Whalers' Charlie Conway won the faceoff in their own zone back to Pablo Biznette, who carried the puck coast to coast, before passing off to Alfred Holiday who smashed the equalizer past Mikke Laukkanen. While the goal itself was impressive, it was the skating and subsequent assist by Biznette which was the most impressive aspect of the play:

<center>[Image: MacArthurPassBetweenOwnLegsTurrisWild.gif]
A slick pass from Pedro Biznette after skating the length of the ice set up Alfred Holiday to bring the Whalers back to even in the first period.</center>

Period 1: 10:56 - Goal by KEL
After 2 goals in the first 5 minutes, it appeared this would be a high scoring tilt. After about a 6 minute stalemate, which included a fruitless power play opportunity for Vancouver, it was Dieter Dominique racking up his second point of the game by way of goal, to put Kelowna back out front. After turning the puck over in the Whalers' zone, it was Dominique who created a turnover to get the puck back- which led to a shot by Nicholas Leier, who was looking for his second of the game. The puck was stopped by goal tender Stiv Dingles, but with a rebound which was collectd by Kelowna. The puck ended up back on Dieter's stick after a series of passes, and Kelwona was back on top when he struck home.
<center>[Image: 8203714.jpg]
Dieter gives KEL the lead 2-1 on his 10th minute goal. Rebound control by Stiv Dingles would plague him throughout this game</center>

Period 1: 11:16 - Goal by VAN
In following with the quick back and forth strike theme of the first two goals, Vancouver was one again able to capitalize on the "window of opportunity" which usually presents itself in the minutes following a goal. After receiving a pass in the Knights' zone, Charlie Conway was able to rip not one, not 2 (after retrieving his first shot's miss), but a 3 shots in quick succession after receiving a pass from Alfred Holiday- the third of which finding its way past Laukkanen.

<center>[Image: 870798_Blues-Stars-Hockey.JPEG-ac7.jpg]
Charlie Conway was able to slip the puck under the arm of Kelowna's Laukkanen in first period action at the Whaler's home ice</center>

Period 1: 16:25 - Goal by VAN
Adding the final tally of the 5 goal first period was Zach Zyvleski, who was able to reap the rewards of hard work by Alfred Holiday. Holiday had stifled a Knights' offensive effort in the Whalers' end, and distributed the puck out of his zone to Zyvleski, who had carried it across the Kelowna blue line. A pass was turned over by Charlie Conway, only to have Holiday again put his excellent anticipation to use, jumping a pass in the Kelwona zone to regain possession before racking up a second (and his second) assist via a Pablo Biznette set up for Zyvleski.

<center>[Image: wORman5.gif]
Rounding out an exciting 1st period, it was Zach Zyvleski's shot hitting pay dirt for Vancouver. This was the first time they'd be able to wrestle a lead from Kelowna in the game.</center>

So, to round out the first period, Vancouver had 3 goals on 16 shots to Kelowna's 2 goals on 9 shots. Vancouver came away 1/3 on the PP, with Kelowna netting 1/2. The Whalers were in the lead for the time being, but their lack of penalty kill effectiveness, and only a 78% save rate on their side, it wasn't a comfortable lead by any stretch.

-----
Period 2: 2:48 - Goal KEL
It didn't take long for Kelowna to yet again bring the score back to even for a third time in the game, managing to score a quick goal bringing us to 3-3. Yet again, Kelowna was allowed to shoot multiple times, collecting the puck after 2 missed shots, and regaining possession after a 3rd shot's rebound escaped Stiv Dingles. It was again the 4th effort that proved effective, with
Beau Bent on the receiving end of a Dieter Dominique shot which Dingles let free post stop.

<center>[Image: tukka-rask-stick-smash-750.jpg]
Things were knotted up yet again as Kelowna out worked Vancouver in their zone to collect several loose pucks and a rebound. Stiv Dingles looking distraught after another rebound results in a goal.</center>

Period 2: 15:36 - Goal by VAN
Nearly 13 minutes had passed since Kelowna evened the score at 2, and we had seen the longest goal free stretch of hockey up to that point in the game. Vancouver had failed to capitalize on 3 more power play opportunities, with Kelowna's 2nd ranked PK (84.68%) doing the dirty work effectively. Although, even if you're not surrendering goals, playing so frequently on the PK, where you're unable to attack can be taxing on the team's endurance. Constantly having to be reactionary is not a great place to be, especially in a close game.

The dead lock was broken when Mango Dollar found sunight, on assists from Levi Kubrak and Alfred Holiday. Yet again, it was Holiday who produced the turnover which led to the goal; intercepting a pass in the neutral zone, allowing him to pass into the Knight's zone, and finally, after 2 missed shots by Kubrak, allowing Mango to collect the puck and put a shot on net- which would ultimately make it in.
<center>[Image: capsgoal.gif]
Kubrak's shot goes wide, with Mango Dollar crashing the net and cashing in to ice the game</center>

The 2nd period saw only 2 goals, but no shortage of action with 22 shots, 12 to 10 in favor of Kelowna. In a game now with 7 goals on the board, 4-3 in favor of Vancouver, it seemed both teams were pushing hard, but getting tired.

3rd period: In the 3rd period Vancouver were playing defensively with a lead, in an effort to take home the win. The high amount of time spent on the PK (they picked up an additional 2 penalties in the 3rd period, bringing their total to 16 minutes) appeared to have caught up to Kelowna, as they were unable to create any scoring chances worthy of a goal.

The game ended 4-3 for Vancouver, with shots 34-29 in their favor. Finally!

Vancouver were finally able to the proverbial monkey of their backs, as they took Kelowna the distance to get the win in regulation. If they hope to move up the standings, they'll have to have more nights where they've got their competition cutting ruts to the sin bin, allowing them to take the pressure off themselves and dictate the outcome to their opponents.

MVP
Clearly Alfred Holiday takes home MVP honors for this game, his 4 point night proving pivotal in helping Vancouver get their first win against Kelowna. His defensive positioning and antcipation allowed him to create the opportunities for his teammates. His 3 assist night vaulted him into the top spot for assists on his squad, with 12.

Hello and welcome to The Round Table, the only official Kelowna Knights postgame show. What a home opener for the Knights, beating the Western Conference champions, the Prince George Firebirds, three to two in a thrilling, end to end race in which the Knights outshot the Firebirds 31-20.

Goals of the Game

Let’s take a look at some of the highlights of tonight…

The scoring was opened by Dieter Dominique, only 47 seconds in, who received a beautiful pass from Fedor Shirobokov, who had an outstanding pre-season, leading all Kelowna D in points. Dominique wasted no time in flipping the puck over McFadden’s glove easily, and the Knights are up by one!

In the second period, with the game tied at one, Knights rookie and first round draft pick in the S29 draft, Ty Justice, scores an absolute bomb from the blue line, assisted by last season’s giants, Mikko Linna and Mikael Talo, once again sporting the C and one of the As. It appears that partnering Justice with the other alternate, star defencewoman Mia Landvik, is only doing good things for his development, and he looks to be a star in the SMJHL very soon.

Tied at two, with less than eight minutes left in the third period, the game winning goal came off the stick of another Knights rookie, Nicolas Leier, as Dominique picks up his second point of the game. This draft class might be the strongest the Knights have had in years, and it’s already showing.

Player interview

After the game, we sat down with returning starting goalie, Mikke Laukkanen, fresh from his trip to New Hampshire for the New England Wolfpack’s preseason, where he went 4-2-0, including shutting out the rival Minnesota Chiefs.

Interviewer: How do you feel about the start of the season, since you weren’t able to be here for preseason?

Laukkanen: I feel good! I know the guys have been training hard, and I skyped with Mik and Deets basically every night, got snapchats from everyone else, so it was almost like I was here. It’s good to be back though, the Wolfpack guys are awesome, but I missed my team, you know?

I: Yo had a pretty good season last season, do you feel like you can improve from there?

L: Oh, for sure, I know I was pretty disappointed in how the playoffs went down, so that’s definitely something that’s on my mind going into this season, to not only have a good regular season, but also to keep it up in the playoffs. This is a really special team though, and there’s-- I don’t want to jinx it, but there’s a feeling in the room that we have something really special here. With all the guys from last season, and adding players like Ty and Cara, this is the strongest team I’ve played on in a long time. There’s definitely room for improvement, especially from me, but this is a good team. I think we can go far.

I: How was the game for you tonight?

L: I would have liked to be a little busier [laughs] But I’m never going to blame my D for doing their jobs and suppressing shots. It’s a hard job, and any time I face less than twenty shots a game, I have to thank the players in front of me.

MVP

The first Knights MVP of the season was potentially the most underrated player last season. German born Dieter Dominique opened the scoring for the Knights, and was a key part of the game winner, and looked strong the whole game. Expect great things from one of the quieter members of a solid Kelowna core.

Game Nine

Hello and welcome back to The Round Table!

The second game of the season for the Knights was another rivalry game, against the Colorado Mammoths, a behemoth team that beat them last season in the playoffs, and are always a formidable opponent. The Mammoths, however, put in a poor showing, only getting 11 shots to Kelowna’s 40, but pushing the game all the way to a shootout, where goaltender Mikke Laukkanen stood strong to get his second straight victory of the season, 2-1.

Let’s take a listen to the game winning goal in TSN’s Big Play of the Game…

The first shooter for the Knights, last years rookie phenom, Mikael Talo, steps up to center ice. He sweeps in slowly, taking a wide path, cuts in front of the goalie, brings it to his backhand, and manages to sneak it five-hole on Andrews, who think he has it, but no! It’s in the net! The Knights are up one to nothing in the shootout!

That ended up being the only goal scored in the shootout, as all three of the Mammoths shooters failed to score, and Talo’s quick backhand shot ends up winning the game.

Player Interview

We caught up with Talo after the game:

Interviewer: How good does it feel to score the first of the season in the shootout?

Talo: It was pretty cool. Would have been nicer to score in regulation, but I’ve always liked shootouts. Lauks says it’s because I like being the center of attention, but [shrugs]. I knew he had my back against their shooters, so I decided to have a little fun.

I: Any goals for this season?

T: I mean, there is one, but I don’t want to jinx it. Personally, it would be nice to recreate the success of my rookie season. I’m hoping to play for the Wolfpack next season, and it would be nice to show them they made the right choice for their first round pick.

I: Anything else you want to say?

T: Uh, go Knights, I guess! And I wanna thank the fans, there are an unbelievable number of Talo jerseys out there. It’s so cool to see the support the fans are giving us after the disappointment at the end of last season. We’re not gonna go out so easy this season.

MVP

The MVP this game is none other than the MVP of last season, Mikael Talo. He led the team last season, both on and off the ice, and he returns this season as one of the two alternates for the Knights. If he can recreate even a third of what he did for the team last season, he’ll cement himself as utterly irreplacable. He’ll be sorely missed in Kelowna next season.

GAME 20 - WHALERS @ MILITIA

The reigning champs played host to some some cross country rivals as the Whalers came to town for a game that promised to spark and sizzle from before the puck had even dropped. Would the champions have enough in the tank to keep away the young team on the rise trying to reach their former glory once again?

1. Highlight Reel

First period, 14:54

"Lewis-Flood will skate out and collect the puck, he plays it to Viatcheslav Orlov who will skate with it. Orlov looks ahead and finds Jean Chretien. Chretien fires one high on Triforce Link, and scores! The Militia take a lead in the first."

Second period, 9:36

"Viatcheslav Orlov has the puck for Montreal here, but he is hit by Thor Pederson! Pederson takes the loose puck for the Whalers and passes it to Lars Dahlstrom. Dahlstrom from close to the net shoots, but it's deflected off Winston Porter and into the net. Goal for Vancouver to tie the game"

Second period, 12:07

"It's Feta Fingers who will skate this one out of his own zone, he looks ahead to Johnny Watson. Watson shoots and Link saves it with his pad, but Rozentals gathers it and shoots again. Scores! Montreal reclaim their lead!"

Third period, 18:34

"After Vancouver's last goal we're all tied up here. and less than two minutes to play! Vancouver win the face off, it's played out by Brandon Makarov to Thor Pederson. Thor Pederson skates it a little, perhaps waiting for the pass to become available. Lars Dahlstrom moves into position and Pederson finds him, Dahlstrom shoots a one timer straight into the net! Goal for Vancouver and they take the lead with less than 90 seconds left!"

2. The interview.

After a disappointing conclusion to the game for the Militia, we caught up with their usual star rookie, Nolan Angello to get some reaction to what went on.

1. Nolan, a tough loss for the Militia with the game winning goal being scored against you in the game's dying moments. Where did tonight go wrong for the team?

"It's tough to take. I think I didn't really play the kind of game I would have liked to, the team didn't get enough puck on net to test their goalie and we just weren't sharp enough. We need to be at our best to win and that wasn't the case tonight."

2. How much personal responsibility do you take for the loss tonight?

"I mean I obviously was a long way from where I need to be. The team has some great players but I'm the leading point scorer so a lot of responsibility ends up on me, and when I have a bad game like this and don't manage to score at all I feel shitty. I think it wasn't solely me responsible for not finishing the job tonight but yeah, I could've done a lot more."

3. What have you learnt today that you can apply next time you come up against the Whalers?

"They're a very tough team to play, very physical and gritty. Their top guys on defense like to hit and throw their weight around, so if we get caught up trying to take them on it can get rough. We usually play a very quick game and I think if we go back to that style in future we should see the results improve."

Thanks for your time Nolan.

3. Three Stars

3. Thor Pederson

Despite playing on the Whalers' 4th line, Pederson delivered a star performance tonight. Picking up 2 apples, being a +2 rating and getting a pair of hits when you were only on the ice for 7 or so minutes is a very solid night, and were it not for Pederson's assist, the game winning goal for Vancouver may not have happened.

2. Winston Porter

In a similar style to Pederson. Porter proved himself vital to the team despite playing very few minutes. Porter scored an important game tying goal for the Whalers that helped to keep the Militia and their lead in check.

1. Lars Dahlstrom

Mr. Clutch, aka Lars Dahlstrom made the game all about him tonight. Scoring the game winning goal with little time remaining was obviously his main achievement, but another assist and two hits gave him a solid all around game. A well deserved first star.

It is interesting to note the effectiveness of Vancouver's 4th line in this game. They provided 2 of the team's 3 goals and all 3 of it's members earned "star" honours, despite only 7 minutes on the ice for the entire game.

In conclusion

Vancouver's 4th line dug deep and managed to outmatch the Militia, and the team's clutch factor came into play in the dying moments. A enjoyable match up between two teams who will be very much worth keeping an eye on later in the season.

Final Score:

Whalers Detroit Falcons - 3
Militia Montreal Militia - 2

This time we're taking S29: A Look Back into the present, as we're here on site after the Vancouver Whaler's most recent game against the Colorado Mammoths!

Quick History & Tonight highlights
This is the second time these two teams have faced off, and it's been a matchup which the Whalers, especially goal tenders Stiv Dingles and Triforce Link, have loved- Colorado has yet to score a single goal against our boys!

Let's do a quick recap of the scoring in today's game, along with some other notes:

We didn't know it at the time, but just past half way into period 1 this game was a done deal. 9:56 in, it was Brandon Makarov creating a turn over in his defensive zone, which would ultimately get things going the Whaler's way. Marakov passed to Winston Porter, who skated coast to coast before unleashing a shot which went just wide. Marakov had hustled down to the offensive zone, and put himself in position to collect the rebound off the boards, and stuff it in the back of the net, as Jacob Andrews was slow to respond after the close initial miss.
<center>[Image: 1J5z56S.gif]
Marakov's excellent level of effort led to his scoring. Created a turn over, followed the play, gathered the rebound and finished cleanly.</center>

The second, and final, goal came again in the 1st period, with Vancouver on the power play. After a series of crisp passes put the Whalers' in the Mammoths' zone, it was none other than Marakov who yet again was in position to stuff a rebound past Andrews off a Diego Ramirez shot which Jacob couldn't haul in.

<center>[Image: CfYhCGt.gif]
Marakov yet again was the beneficiary of his teammates' hard shots. This time Andrews was able to get a leg on the first shot, but his inability to control the puck cost him, as Marakov finished the play in style.</center>

That would wrap up the scoring for the game, with the final score 2-0. The shot count was Vancouver: 31, Colorado: 9, as Link got the easiest shutout a goal tender can hope for tonight.

Another thing we've got to cover is the PP for the Whalers... Colorado found themselves on the PK 3 times in the first period, a trio of McGraw, Sludge and O'Dooley whistled for 2 instances of interference and one call for tripping. In the second, McGraw was sent to the box on a major for boarding. During the third period, which saw one additional power play for Vancouver, a fight erupted between Jon Ross and Evgeny Yakikov. Yakikov was able to best Ross, but the important thing was the statement Ross made- showing that you can't cheap shot the Whalers without feeling the heat in some way. If they won't score on you (they were 1 of 5 today), they'll make you throw fistacuffs. Vancouver absolutely needs to get their PP percentage up... they sit dead last at just over 11% on the season. Opposing teams really have no reason not to get as physical as possible with the Whalers so far this season...

Post Game Interview
A little earlier we were able to catch up with Conklin Owen, and get his thoughts on the game:

A Look Back: Conklin, good to see you- Tell us about the game tonight, After getting that 2 goal lead, did you guys dial it back at all?

Conklin Owen: Honestly, we did. We've been having a real rough go of it lately, trying to keep pucks out of our net, so we've really been focusing on the defensive aspects of the game in practices. We got 2, and we knew Colorado has had a lot of trouble scoring on us from our first meeting, so coach had us keep them to the outside, not take too many risks, and it paid off. I think they had what, like 10 shots all night?

ALB: 9, to be exact. That's really pretty impressive. Did Triforce thank you guys after the game?

CO: Nah, he doesn't have to. Honestly, the way we see it, it's up to us to keep them to so few shots each night, and when we don't, we should be apologizing... not him thanking us for doing our jobs.

ALB: What'd you think of Marakov's 2 goals? Both rebound opportunities... is he relying on others to make space for him, or is it just good hustle?

CO: It's great hustle. He was in position both times, and that's entirely up to him to control. It's not easy controlling rebounds either, it takes a lot more skill than most people give credence to. Both good goals, and good for him.

ALB: You haven't scored in a while... what's up with that?

CO: You guys noticed that? Oh, I didn't realize it at all. Oh wait... I'm in a slump, man. Kind of a dick move to bring it up. I'm doing all I can to work myself out of the rut, and I've probably been trying too hard, truth be told. Gripping the stick a little tight, and missing opportunities I know I should convert on. The goals will come... all I care about is the winning, which we did tonight. Let's keep it about the team.

ALB: Fair enough... who's your MVP for tonight?

CO: Jon Ross. The guy went to bat for all of us. He took a whooping doing it, too. But it isn't about winning the fight, per se... it's the fact that he was willing to lay it out there for us. It's not an easy fear to face, I've never been in a fight at this level, so I can't even grasp the full nature of it. But I do know one thing, those are real punches, and he'll feel 'em tomorrow. We've gotta make teams pay on the PP to keep things under control, I think.

ALB: What strategy do you guys need to tweak to score more on the power play?

CO: If I told you, I'd have to... well you know the rest. Look guys, I've got a cold one waiting for me in the locker room, and I can't keep 'er waiting any longer. I'll talk to you after the next one, hopefully another win!

ALB: Alright Conklin, have a great night, and congrats on the win. Score one for us!

CO: Oh I'll try!

MVP
As much as we too admire Ross for going toe to toe with a big guy in Evgeny Yakikov, we've got to give tonight's MVP award to Marakov, whose hustle, offensive awareness, and ability to finish carried the day today, as he was the only one to get on the board, beating Colorado with his production alone.

Game 14 Prince George Firebirds vs Colorado Mammoths

Game 14

The 1-2-0 Prince George Firebirds playes the 1-1-1 Colorado Mammoths. This game being so early into the season made this game so unpredictable. Colorado being the younger team however made Prince George a heavily favourite to win this hockey game. They also won their first game between these two teams by a score of 4-2 and they outshot the Mammoths 26 to 11.

Prince George went down by 2 goals early in the 1st period in the first 9 minutes of the hockey game. With goals by BJ Subban and ZzJack's Robot Janakowski
Dolorado looked to go to win a their 2nd game of the season. However Nicolas Winter scored 26 seconds afterwards, which cut the lead in half and ended the potential push from Colorado to make it 3-0 and make the game into a blow out.

A 4 on 3 power-play for Colorado which lasted for 3 minutes late in the 2nd period was another key point in this game as the firebirds killed it off, it looked like they had a chance. The lack of a goal in the 2nd period for Colorado lost all the momentum that they had going into the 3rd period and really need to deliver a goal to make their fans happy.

Then the 3rd period started which the firebirds dominated and dominated with the shots being 12- 5 in this period a goal was bound to happen to tie up the game as with 15 seconds left in the hockey game. A firebird found the back of the net sending this game to overtime. 4. Prince George Firebirds , Casper Jakobsson 2 (Hunky Monkey, Leo Yakimov) at 19:45

No one scored in overtime so there is an shootout. The first two firebirds shooters missed the net and firebird netminder Michael McFadden
Stopped the first two shots on net. The 3rd Firebird shooter came down and he sniped one behind the Mammoths netminder, putting all the pressure on Evgeny Yakikov, A rookie which was stopped and the firebirds won their second game of the season.

Three Stars of the game were

1 - ZzJack's Robot Janakowski (COL) with Colorado second goal of the game
2 - Casper Jakobsson (PGF) Scored the Game Tying Goal and won the Game in Overtime
3 - BJ Subban (COL) Got things going into the first period with the first goal of the hockey game.

The final score was 3-2 for the Prince George Firebirds in the Shootout. Colorado got the loser point :(

Game 18 Prince George Firebirds vs Colorado Mammoths

Game 18

This is the third time this season that these two teams have played against each other, a rivalry has started a little bit as eventually in a physical sport like hockey if you play a bunch of close games against each other, you start to hate the other team. Colorado is 0-1-1 against the firebirds and are hoping to not start a three game losing streak against them as they try to get their 2nd win of the season. Hopefully this isn't another game that goes into overtime too.

Ser Duncan goes to the box and Colorado gets the 1st powerplay of the game, they end up not scoring.
Casper Jakobsson shortly pots the 1st goal of the game and his 3rd of the season which were assisted by Gabriel Belmont and Karl Hertzberg. Then Colorado gets into penalty trouble as Sim Browski takes two stupid penalties and well Firebirds get two power-plays to end the 1st period well they failed on them and the 1st period is over as the firebirds have an early 1 goal lead.

Frontdoor McGraw scores within the first 3 mins of the 2nd period to tie the game up at one peice, this was his 2nd goal of the season. Ben Dover and Jacob Andrews get the assists. Dean Banger goes to the box for a penalty and well Colorado fail to score and the game stays at one a piece.

BEN DOVER INTERVIEW

Code:
:interview: thoughts on the game?

Dover: Its tied right now, we need to start creating more chances, defensively we have been good but to beat this team we need to create more chances and try to find the back of the net. We have lost the last two games against prince geogre to due the lack of goals.

:interview: thoughts on your assist:

Dover: Nice simply breakout, if McGraw didn't finish I wouldn't have that assist right now. I am happy with it, I need to start get some more points to help my team win.

:interview: What are you hoping to do today?

Dover: Help my team win and maybe get another point for myself. I would love to be a difference maker as a rookie.

Dean Banger (PGF) for Delaying the game (Minor) at 0:24

Colorado gets an early power-play. 3. Colorado Mammoths , Frontdoor McGraw 3 (Maverick O'Dooley, Steven Stamkos Jr.) at 0:34 (PP)
McGraw scores his second goal of the hockey game giving his team the 2-1 lead, this is the second time that the Mammoths have to protect a 2-1 lead against the firebirds this season late in the 3rd period hopefully they score another one soon.

well fuck,

Davis scores his 1st goal of the season, making it a 2-2 game and the game heads to overtime AGAIN! :(

This game went to overtime which no scored. Firebirds second shooter Nicolas Winter

Michael McFadden stops the third Mammoth shooter and well the firebirds are now 3-0 against the Mammoths. :((

Three Stars:

1 - Frontdoor McGraw (COL) scored two goals for the Mammoth
2 - Casper Jakobsson (PGF) Gave his team a 1-0 lead in the 1st period to work with
3 - Gabriel Belmont (PGF) assisted on the two firebird goals.

Game 41: Detroit Falcons vs Halifax Raiders

Welcome on behalf of Off! Brand Bug Spray to the Murder City, Detroit. The hometown Falcons come into this game 5-5-0 on the season, but winners of 3 of their last 4. They face a Raiders team who has dropped two in a row and have come out of the gate slow, posting a 4-6-0 record behind starter Richard 'Dick' Chocolate. Rookie netminder Carter Fleury will get his first SMJHL start tonight, as Falcons starter Sivy McSieve will start his 11th straight.

Detroit jumps out of the gate in this one. Just over 90 seconds in, Matthew Shea blocks a shot, Falcons Nucky Toohoots regains control and gets it out to the point where Clive Stonehands finds Kalid Dermot. Dermot puts his 9th past Carter Fleury and gives the Falcons an early lead!

Raiders on the Penalty Kill now with Matthew Shea in the box for Holding. Raiders killed their first penalty without surrendering a shot, but this time it will be Sarone taking advantage of a quick turnaround to cath Halifax on a bad line change. He takes the puck all the way in and beats Fleury to give Detroit a 2-0 advantage.

The lack of discipline contines as Banning takes a tripping minor moments later. The Raiders would manage to kill the penalty without giving up a shot, but right after Banning leaves the box, Maverick Mitchell finds Hans Moleman bursting into the zone alone and Halifax is down 3 just over halfway through the first on back to back defensive lapses.

A few minutes later, Aumeisters is looking for a pass through the neutral zone and is picked off by Sarone. Sarone hits Moleman moving in and he's going to be all alone and puts his second of the night past Carter Fleury. Halifax seemingly abandons Carter three times in a row and that'll be the end of the night for the rookie after 4 goals on 5 shots in 16:08. Tough outing for a guy who got the defensive equivalent of forcing the rookie to take his first pre-game lap by himself.

A little life for Halifax before the end of the first, Banning, Herzog and Rosston come in on the rush, Banning moves the puck to Rosston who finds Herzog for his 5th on the year. Halifax stops the bleeding and goes to the tunnel down 4-1.

First shift of the second period, Prince Daniel James is picked off by Victor Lindstrom who shifts the puck up to Aumeisters. Aumeisters moves to Porter who snaps his first shot wide, but lands on the loose puck and finds a hole in McSieve to give Halifax a little momentum to begin the period. 4-2 Falcons lead, 36 seconds in.

Raiders on the penalty kill again, Chocolate with a big save, kicks out a rebound, puck comes back around on a wide James shot but Lindstrom is there to block the shot and keep it a 2 goal game!

Just past midway, everyone is scrambling in front of the net at the loose puck in the Falcons zone. Svahn misses the net, Eaves takes a swipe and it goes just wide, but Porzingis finds the puck and tosses it at the net and it finds it's way in through the mess. Halifax closes the gap and finds themselves down only a goal.

Late in the period, Halifax is in the box for the 5th time - they would go on to take 9 penalties while Detroit drew a clean sheet - this time McCardle for roughing. Thorvaldsen shot is kicked out by Chocolate, a Berkis shot misses but Moleman pounces on the loose puck and Chocolate slides over to catch it, keeping the game close!

Into the 3rd, and the Raiders are - get this - killing a penalty. With Battle off 35 seconds in for Elbowing, Novastar has a shot blocked by Reflieux, but retrieves the puck and gets Chocolate to kick a rebound out to Rising Hippo, who lets a bomb go from the slot and the Falcons get a safe 2 goal lead back!

Off the ensuing skirmish, James breaks in and starts getting past Porter, who takes a hooking call and sends the PK right back out. Beating up on an exhausting PK crew, the Falcons PP get a cycle going and involve all 5 skaters before Sarone finds the right opportunity, and doesn't miss! A gorgeous passing play following total domination by the Falcons power unit.

The Raiders would not find time to come back, putting up one more on a Jean-Luc Reflieux rebound to end the scoring at 6-4. Sivy McSieve would take the win for Detroit, saving 21 of 25 and in a cruel twist, Chocolate would take the loss for giving up the Game Winning Goal. He would put up a very impressive 25 saves with 2 goals allowed in just under 44 minutes.

Final shots in favor of Detroit 32-25, with Detroit winning the faceoff game with 55% of the draws coming in their favour. Halifax went to the box 9 times and surrendered 3 goals, including the game winner and the insurance goal.

Off! Bug Spray 3 Stars of the Game
3 - Felix Herzog 1G1A
2 - Hans Moleman 2G
1 - Maximus Sarone 2G1A

Special 4th Star for Underappreciated Game goes to Dick Chocolate, who gave Halifax every chance they needed to come back after a disastrous start. In the end, the real story of the game would be the Raiders complete lack of discipline, something that will get you beat by teams far worse than the Falcons. Have to imagine that this will be something they'll focus on improving through the season.

Thanks for tuning in!

Kristians Rozentals celebrates after scoring the game winner against Vancouver</div>

Game 42, Whalers @ Militia, will be brought to you by the SMJHL Today Podcast, featuring contributor mpc. The highlight reel mentioned in the podcast can be viewed below, thanks for listening, and come back for updates or subscribe to the feed!

PGS Game 42 here!

HIGHLIGHT REEL

1. Montreal taking advantage of offensive faceoff wins

Nolan Angello takes a pass from Vladimir Lenin for the shot on goal, but [color=maroonJason Forbrookcolor] is there for the Goal deflection goal Goal past Stiv Dingels

2. Dingels gives every shot his best

Dingels wasn't there for 3 shots, but he was there to leave a soft rebound for, surprisingly, a ton of Militia players. It's not really mentioned that much in the podcast, but Dingels didn't do himself many favors with his 10 rebounds, as all of them went to the opposing team, and Rozentals' game winner was off one. Still, proves he was in the right place at the right time, and is what Vancouver should keep constant.

3. Oh yeah, Rozentals scored twice

Look at him deke past SHL draft prospect Carl Farris for the beautiful start to the Goal Militia's 3 goal night Goal. That isn't to say Farris is a bad defender: he blocked 1 shot and the Rozentals goal was his only minus of the night. Overall, a good night defensively, but not enough to help when it counted. Rozentals was definitely the MVP of the game.

Hello and welcome to SMJHL Post-Game Live, presented by SportClips!

Do you want your hair to be as soft as the Mammoths’ fur? Need your flow to be as strong as the Mammoths’ penalty kill?

<div align="center">[Image: parros_george.jpg]</div>

Well, come on down to SportClips, where we won’t really cut your hair much, but we’ll shampoo it and give you a nice head scritch for twice as much as you could’ve paid on a grocery store bottle of Head and Shoulders. We won't even comment on your dandruff. It’s our Just For Men guarantee!!

Tonight's recap looks at one of the league’s first East Vs. West matchups, Falcons @ Mammoths. Tonight was Colorado’s home opener, and they looked to come out hot. Shovel some more microwave popcorn in your face while we blow your mind with some recent history.

<div align="center"> A LOOK BACK
</div>
Season 27 ended with the Colorado Mammoths as the Four-Star Cup Champions. Meanwhile, Detroit was a second-round exit after making it past the Halifax raiders, only to fall to the Montreal Impact, who would go down to the Mammoths in the finals. At that point, there were a few teams who had credited a Colorado win to the team’s relative ease of schedule prior to the final, but after having won the Cup over Montreal handily with a 4-2 victory, the stirrings were only murmurings.

Season 28 was the true beginning of the East-West controversy. After the rebranded Montreal Militia dominated in every possible statistic, the Detroit Falcons finished second overall in the SMJHL, and a whopping 12 games ahead of the top two Western conference teams, the Vancouver Whalers and the Colorado Mammoths. Understandably, Detroit fans (and other fans of the league) thought the playoffs would be more interesting if, rather than geographical location, conferences were seeded by regular-season standings, potentially giving more depth to postseason play. However, with the bottom-seed Firebirds eventually making it all the way to the final for the second year in a row, perhaps that isn’t the only adjustment that needs to be made.

However, as we’ll see tonight, Colorado was back and ready to prove that they could do mammoth things with a relatively small roster...

<div align="center">Highlight Reel
</div>
1. Jacob Andrews makes four-count series of saves

Despite three separate minor penalties by Colorado in the first period, two of which created a 3-player PK situation for Colorado within the first minute of the game, Colorado goalie Jacob Andrews kept his cool and frustrated the Detroit offense to no end. This particular save came just under three minutes into the first period, Andrews denying a Maverick Mitchell goal a scant two seconds after blocking Nucky Toohoots’s shot on the other side of the net. While the puck rebounded out for the second time, Toohoots got two more opportunities, but his first hit the post and his second was pounced on by Andrews, denying further scoring chances.

2. Sivy McSieve lets one in off a Frontdoor McGraw deflect

Though this may be more of a lowlight goal for Detroit fans, Frontdoor McGraw is credited with the first goal of the game, putting the Mammoths up 1-0. Colorado was feeling confident after killing off what would be the only penalty of the period, and after getting the triple-penalty defenseman Sludge back on the ice just after twelve minutes in, he was able to wrest the puck away from the Falcons and feed it to Joey DiNino, who took it all the way up the ice. With a scrum in front of Falcons goalie Sivy McSieve, the right place, right time McGraw is able to deflect it in such a way that with a lucky hop, skip and a jump, the puck ends up finding the back of the net.

3. Noted goon Sludge redeems himself with the game-winner

With the McGraw deflect and after, the Mammoths seemed to be following the old adage ‘stay in front of your opponent’s net, and eventually it’ll go in,’ and it seemed to be working for them. The Mammoths came into the second up 2-0, and the frustrated Falcons did the one thing they couldn’t afford to do—they began to take penalties. After allowing a William Goddard power play goal under two minutes into the period, the Colorado crowd was going wild. This game-winner, scored by Mammoths defenseman Sludge, ended up being the final nail in the Detroit coffin as the brown and orange crowd roared behind him.

Now, let’s turn our attention to the ice for our…

<div align="center">INTERVIEW INSIGHTS</div>

Tonight we’re on the ice with Jacob Andrews.

Interview Jacob, 10 of your 23 stops were made in the first period alone, Colorado taking three minors and leaving your Mammoths on the PK. Heading into the locker room before the second, did you have any feeling that your stellar night was going to continue?

JA: It was a normal routine, since Rudd got the call-up I've been on my toes 24/7 never had a break. I'm hoping that by next season my defence will be developed and I won't have to think to myself " Can I sit down now, or are they going to walk through my defence again?".

Interview Your name was in the conversation for the SMJHL goalie of the year. Do you think you should have another shot at it this year, and who do you think your competition will be?

JA: I think I will be in contention again, this season. As for my competition it'll be McFadden and Lewis-Flood. At least, that's what I think.

Interview Two seasons ago, you were drafted to the Manhattan Rage. Have you spoken to them about when you're going to get the inevitable call-up?

JA: I haven't been in contact with the managers and staff lately, so I doubt I'll be getting a call-up next season. The season after I think I stand a good chance of getting called up.

Interview Thank you, Jacob. And back to you!

With one last segment before we wrap, we bring you the…

<div align="center">Cascade Scrub of the Game – Rising Hippo, Falcons</div>

Falcons forward Hippo was in the wrong place at the wrong time today. Both of his undisciplined penalties, a roughing and a high-sticking penalty, led to two Mammoths PP goals in the third period. To make a bad thing worse, Hippo’s passing was particularly inaccurate, with 9 of his passes intercepted by Mammoths players. When combined with his -2 plus/minus, he is the Cascade Scrub of the Game!

If Hippo wants to get off the scrub list, he’ll need to throw out the flashiness and get back to disciplined, accurate passing, and use Cascade to get those dishes squeaky clean, every time.

That will do it for tonight! Thanks to all of our viewers for tuning in, and we’ll see you next week!

<a href='index.php?showuser=2143' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-17'>akamai</a>, that's a beautiful head shot to choose lol. But small roster? How can Colorado still have a small roster with the infinity number of players they signed as UDFAs? It all good, great PGS
