Player Profile
Ryan Vas is an excellent two-way defenseman. He likes to hold the blue line and shoot off the blue line for rebounds/deflections rather than carry the puck deep but if he sees space or sees that his team is in the middle of a line change, he will do everything in his power to make sure that he doesn't turn the puck over and that his teammates can trust him to give them time to join the play without having to skate in full speed.

While Ryan Vas has the size to play physically, he is more inclined to use his stick and skating to defend as opposed to putting up big hits. He will also block shots when necessary but he likes to try and stop the play before it ever develops to the point of a dangerous shot.

Vas also possesses a good shot but as mentioned before, he'd rather hold the blue line than always go deep and out of position for a better shot. He has already scored big goals in his career, such as becoming the first 16 year in the Swiss League to score an OT game winning goal in the playoffs.

When he turned 17, he went to Finland to play in the Finnish Elite League where he excelled as a top 2 defenseman, playing 20-22 minutes every night and showing no signs of tiredness. All of his efforts paid off in the end as his team, the Tampereen Tappara, went all the way to the cup with the help of Vas (and Finnish star Patrik Laine) who also won the Jari Kurri trophy for his efforts in the playoffs and the regular season.

Ryan Vas has a good ceiling but if he truly wants to be elite, he needs to be more physical and utilize his shot more. Other than that, he has excellent vision, good skating, good stick play and good playmaking skills. Ryan Vas is most likely going to late in the first round or early in the second as more prominent goal scorers are likely to go before him but no matter where he goes, Ryan Vas is ready to make an impact in his first season in the SMJHL.

Questions

So RainDelay asks

What SMJHL teams' logos and colors do you like the best?
Personally, the Montreal Militia logo is badass but at the end of the day, what matters is the players, the coaches, management and people who want me to play for them. I'll worry about the colors later.

Which NHL player would you compare your game to?
My game most closely resembles that of guys like Duncan Keith, Seth Jones, Ryan Suter and Johnny Boychuk. I like to keep the blue line tight, keep the puck in, shoot off the blue line and join the play if I see space but I won't join rushes every time as I consider my game to be less active offensively compared to players like Erik Karlsson or P.K. Subban.

So Jenny asks

What mood do you bring to a locker room?
I try to bring in a positive mood but also a competitive and realistic one. We need to be in a mindset that we're gonna win and that we can do our best as a team, even if we can't as individuals, which would be really hard. But its all about positive energy that leads to a positive outcome.
