Top 3 Season 30 SMJHL Goalies
By Jeff Kirkstone

Finally, I’m going to shine the light on my favourite position: goalies. For the sake of fairness I have resisted the urge to place myself at 1, 2, and 3… but rest assured I would put myself 1, 2, and 3 if it wouldn’t make this article much less humble. Anyway, It looks like we’ve got the best crop of goalies in SMJHL draft history so let's have a look at who I picked as the 2nd, 3rd and 4th best goalie in the draft.

#1 Kyle Wahlgren – Hybrid Goalie
5’11”
185lbs
Catches Left

If I had to say that any goalie in this draft was almost as good as me… then for sure I would pick Wahlgren. This kid wants to win and you can tell from the hunger he shows on and off the ice. He’s proven to be a man of many skills and is obviously a natural talent. He is an undersized goalie, and while that may get listed as a weakness elsewhere, I can tell this has been an indirect strength of his. He has obviously worked very hard to cover up his size with his ability, and put in a lot of time proving critics wrong. While we may have the son of a famous SHL goalie in this draft, I’ll take the hard work and determination that Wahlgren possesses any day of the week.

Overall Prospect Rating: A

#2 Ben Waters – Butterfly Goalie
6’3”
216lbs
Catches Left

I actually got to meet Ben the other night at the hotel and the guy is definitely a presence, both on and off the ice. I’m not going to make this post a personal one though, so on to the grading. A pure butterfly goalie who stands 6’3” is definitely one to keep an eye on. Waters can flash the glove or stick out the pads; either way he can almost always do that faster than you can shoot the puck. And once you take the first shot, you likely won’t get another chance at the puck before he smothers it. We share a common flaw in our ability to skate, but while I’ve been spending time working on my skating this summer, Ben has only managed to find the time to buy a new pair of skates. Let me know how that works out for you, Ben. #sickburn #stillfriendsIhope

Overall Prospect Rating: A

#3 Maximilian Wehner – Hybrid Goalie
6’6”
205lbs
Catches Left

Last but certainly not least on my list is Maximilian Wehner, a hybrid goalie hailing from the land of beer and chocolate… I think that’s what they’re famous for. If I asked you to guess the strongest aspect of a 6’6” goalie’s game, you probably wouldn’t guess agility first. Wehner possesses some of the best agility I’ve ever seen, and on top of that his reflexes are phenomenal. So what holds his game back? His skating is some of the worst in the draft, and it would appear he hasn’t done anything to address this. This guy could be a legend someday but he really needs to take a few laps around the pond, if you know what I mean.

Overall Prospect Rating: B+

Getting your friends to write articles about you. Tsk tsk tsk.

As for my skating. Yeah the weakness is pretty glaring but it's in my sight of something to improve. But my other stats are going to make up for that while I work on my skating weakness. My TPE was distributed like a skater before because I am dumb. So my skating is not nearly as bad as it was. Now sitting at 55 instead of 50.
