Team USA celebrates their gold medal in the IIHF this past season

IIHF vs. SHL: Top Goalies</div>
Part 1 looked at skaters. We now tally results and extrapolate the IIHF results to see whether the best goalie on every IIHF team was playing better than, at par with, or worse than their SHL playing level. This article does not include the medal rounds to keep the sample size of 10 games consistent for every top goalie, and the same goes for 50 games in the S31 SHL regular season. All IIHF stats and SHL stats (yay backups) listed are those extrapolated to 50 games linearly, no curves, just fun.

<div align="center">Usa Team USA: Earnest Ciarelli, Steelhawks <a href='index.php?showuser=1174' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-3'>Storm</a> Usa
IIHF Stats: 35-15-0, 105GA, 1230SA, 91.5SV%, 2.09GAA, 0SO
SHL Stats: 29-15-6, 124GA, 1372SA, 91.0SV%, 2.44GAA, 0SO</div>
Playing behind a gold medal team sure helps your stats, doesn't it? Earnest Ciarelli had a magnificent international game, stopping pucks at a slightly higher click than usual and winning more games (duh). Maybe it's that Challenge Cup veteran experience that did the trick. Sure wasn't the Renegades not advancing past the Blizzard. Ciarelli moved on to Hamilton and the Steelhawks to hopefully become a better goalie behind youth sensations on the blue line, and if the Steelhawks want to see their future and current draft overload truly succeed, Ciarelli needs to be standing on his head like he did for the Americans.
<div align="center">ADVANTAGE: Usa for multiple reasons

Germany Team Germany: Timo Haas, Panthers <a href='index.php?showuser=2297' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-54'>InciteHysteria</a> Germany
IIHF Stats: 30-20-0, 150GA, 1270SA, 88.2SV%, 3.07GAA, 5SO
SHL Stats: 32-16-2, 123GA, 1409SA, 91.3SV%, 2.45GAA, 7SO</div>
DISCLAIMER: This is the first SMJHL player turned SHL player I ran into, so these stats are using S32 Preseason numbers for the Panthers. Needless to say, Haas plays better in warm weather and when the net is his own. While most feel that competition helps breed a winning culture, most goalies like to own the pipes, and Haas is no exception. Even though splitting time with Selena Bauer did end up with Germany winning the silver, there has to be something in Haas' mind saying that he can take the net all his own next season. Los Angeles looks to have finally solved their netminder issues and can compete in the West fully.
<div align="center">ADVANTAGE: Panthers but be wary of preseason stats

Norway Team Norway: Brett Broadway, Blizzard <a href='index.php?showuser=51' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-8'>Toast</a> Norway
IIHF Stats: 30-20-0, 110GA, 1310SA, 91.6SV%, 2.25GAA, 10SO
SHL Stats: 29-14-7, 109GA, 1330SA, 91.8SV%, 2.15GAA, 7SO</div>
Broadway always seems to be one of the 8 goalies taken during SHL Fantasy, and for good reason: he's good. Edmonton and Norway both have solid defenses to help the veteran tender, and it seems that he's in the peak of his prime with the consistency shown between pro play and international play. Broadway does seem to have a slightly better rhythm with his boys in Edmonton, stopping more pucks, but it's Norway that provides more defensive support with less shots on goal. This may be why Norway had the higher shutout tendency of the 2 teams, and if Edmonton can play defensively like Norway, Broadway will only get better.
<div align="center">ADVANTAGE: Blizzard but it's by the skin of a grape

Sweden Team Sweden: Robert Andersson, Chiefs <a href='index.php?showuser=1929' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-3'>SwegKingu</a> Sweden
IIHF Stats: 30-15-5, 95GA, 1270SA, 92.7SV%, 1.88GAA, 5SO
SHL Stats: 30-19-1, 138GA, 1545SA, 92.3SV%, 2.34GAA, 1SO</div>
Robert Andersson has been the backstop for Sweden for a decent amount of time, and playing behind your SHL teammate in Alonzo Garbanzo doesn't hurt anything either. Unfortunately for the fans in Minnesota, it seems like Andersson and Garbanzo would be going to the playoffs with a higher seed if Andersson kept up his international play to the paying job. Less shots on goal seems to be a key difference, as the save percentage is close to the same going between international ice and entertainment. Robert needs to get that form (and the rest of that Swedish defense) in Minnesota for the Chiefs to win a Cup.
<div align="center">ADVANTAGE: Sweden because there's more than Garbanzo defending in front of him

Czechoslovakia Team Czechoslovakia: Christoffer Bjornsson, Renegades <a href='index.php?showuser=74' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-62'>Tylar</a> Czechoslovakia
IIHF Stats: 30-20-0, 135GA, 1250SA, 89.2SV%, 2.97GAA, 0SO
SHL Stats: 23-24-3, 138GA, 1622SA, 91.5SV%, 2.72GAA, 1SO</div>
Bjornsson has been an interesting goalie to follow, backstopping the growing Admirals for most of his career and doing sort of the same thing with the Czechs. Unfortunately, one team has defense, the other does not, and that is evident by the shot count against Christoffer in the SHL. Granted, Bjornsson was doing a better job of snatching the puck out of the air, but a better save percentage can't save everything, and even with this increase, the Admirals goaltender let in more pucks than the Czech. Now that Bjornsson is on the Renegades and has a solid top 2 defensive pair, support will come and Bjornsson can have a breakout year.
<div align="center">ADVANTAGE: Czechoslovakia but not for long, if the Renegades can keep pucks away

Uk Team United Kingdom: Michael McFadden Riot <a href='index.php?showuser=11' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-13'>Abdeezy</a> Uk
IIHF Stats: 20-20-10, 150GA, 1505SA, 93.0SV%, 2.08GAA, 5SO
SHL Stats: 25-20-5, 134GA, 1369SA, 90.2SV%, 2.66GAA, 3SO</div>
The UK made it to the medal rounds off the insane performance of Michael McFadden, the franchise goaltender for the Seattle Riot. In a ridiculous display and with the 2nd best save percentage of the tournament, McFadden was able to overcome the shots, but was unable to put pucks in the back of the net for his team, and even his 2 goals against a night wasn't enough to lift them up. Meanwhile, Michael hasn't been as sharp in Seattle, getting better defensive support and doing less with it than he does overseas. The UK is lucky to have McFadden, and Seattle should be too, if he ever carries his international play to the SHL.
<div align="center">ADVANTAGE: Uk but the Riot could change this if McFadden gets going

Finland Team Finland: Mikke Laukkanen, Wolfpack <a href='index.php?showuser=2104' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-17'>jjaybs</a> Finland
IIHF Stats: 30-20-0, 120GA, 1485SA, 91.9SV%, 2.44GAA, 0SO
SHL Stats: 36-10-4, 118GA, 1315SA, 91.0SV%, 2.35GAA, 5SO</div>
Laukkanen has been studying under the tutelage of the winningest playoff goalie in SHL history, and it looks like Mikke is bringing that consistent game over to the Finns. The Wolfpack defense is solid a keeping opportunities away from the then-rookie goaltender, and Mikke was hoping for similar treatment in Finland. Not so, as the focus was toward goal-production and not losing with bad offense. Laukkanen himself seems more comfortable in Finland, and maybe that's due to the Finnish GM placing him in the starter role the whole tournament as opposed to 60% of the SHL season. Wolfpack need to ride their workhorse.
<div align="center">ADVANTAGE: Wolfpack and the gap will only widen from here

Canada Team Canada: Colin Schmidt, Platoon <a href='index.php?showuser=1075' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-3'>Schmidt</a> Canada
IIHF Stats: 25-15-10, 120GA, 1770SA, 93.2SV%, 2.36GAA, 0SO
SHL Stats: 17-25-8, 123GA, 1409SA, 89.1SV%, 3.25GAA, 0SO</div>
Colin Schmidt has been the backstop for a long time, and it seems like his career in Canada should be coming to a close. With Colin completely checked out of the SHL and his locker room presence in Canada empty, there needs to be room made for Jeff Kirkstone, and he's going to face a heavy challenge if the Canadian defense is a porous as it was this tournament. Schmidt stood on his head for the last time, and gave Canada a fighting chance at one last gold medal. Sadly, this has to come to an end due to IIHF activity eligibility rules, and Schmidt will shuffle to his retirement home in West Kendall. You will be missed.
<div align="center">ADVANTAGE: Canada for the last time

Russia Team Russia: Mark Harter, Stars <a href='index.php?showuser=1432' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-63'>Mark H</a> Russia
IIHF Stats: 28-17-5, 150GA, 1500SA, 90.0SV%, 2.98GAA, 5SO
SHL Stats: 31-17-2, 117GA, 1416SA, 91.7SV%, 2.34GAA, 7SO</div>
Harter came to Russia under unusual circumstances and has made a name for himself as the main goalie presence in Russia, with Ekaterina Rudnikova as his protege. Harter's tournament was not the best, with a relatively bad save percentage and not much help defensively. This may have been due to the GM tinkering with defensive strats too much (shameless self-deprication), and Harter suffered. Surprisingly, Harter's had more success in Russia despite these conditions than he ever has in Toronto. The rest of Toronto needs to figure it out for Harter so he can win a Cup with better play than his international game.
<div align="center">ADVANTAGE: Stars, but he's got 1 gold medal, 0 cups

Latvia Team Latvia: Matt Lewis-Flood, Platoon <a href='index.php?showuser=2060' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-3'>RainDelay</a> Latvia
IIHF Stats: 20-25-5, 120GA, 1270SA, 90.9SV%, 2.44GAA, 5SO
SHL Stats: 30-18-2, 118GA, 1333SA, 91.1SV%, 2.38GAA, 2SO</div>
Matt Lewis-Flood has done wonderfully for Latvia since joining the SHL scene. A nation proud of their goalie heritage (Lauris Prikulis), the Latvians needed a backstopt that would provide solid goaltending for seasons to come, and now the Latvians need to form the team around their beast between the pipes. MLF didn't take as many shots against, but didn't seem as up to form as he was in West Kendall. The maroon of the West had been keeping the offensive pressure higher than the maroon of the East, and if Latvia can find more solid defense, MLF could be feeling the gravity of multiple gold medals.
<div align="center">ADVANTAGE: Platoon because they have a contending team ready to go

Austria Team Austria: Lukas Berger, Jets <a href='index.php?showuser=2038' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-17'>TheLastOlympian07</a> Austria
IIHF Stats: 15-30-5, 130GA, 1265SA, 89.7SV%, 2.80GAA, 5SO
SHL Stats: 13-30-7, 167GA, 1593SA, 89.5SV%, 3.32GAA, 2SO</div>
Berger hasn't gotten the luck of the draw when it comes to teams. With the exception of one playoff series win against a stacked Renegades team, Berger has been on a consistently rebuilding Jets team and has been dragging the Austrians to some of their wins. With a guy like Lord Vader in front of you in Austria, you face less shots, and it seems like Jets defenders need to spend less time in the sin bin and more time on the ice, taking pucks for your stone wall in net. This is the only real difference in play, since Berger's still saving at the same clip and the record are close to the same. Less SOG = better for Berger, Jets.
<div align="center">ADVANTAGE: Austria thanks to Vader and his defensive presence

Ireland Team Ireland: Jakob Tanner, Wolfpack <a href='index.php?showuser=1269' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-8'>Tanner</a> Ireland
IIHF Stats: 10-40-0, 130GA, 1600SA, 91.9SV%, 2.62GAA, 5SO
SHL Stats: 25-18-7, 125GA, 1415SA, 91.2SV%, 2.48GAA, 8SO</div>
Retiring with a Challenge Cup and the most playoff wins/Cup Wins in SHL history would have been nice, but no, Jakob Tanner had to play in the IIHF tournament behind a bad Team Ireland. The recruitment famine has hit them hard, and Tanner had no support on defense. Tons of shots on net still ring in goals, even with a great goaltender, and that's where Ireland falls short. New England, however, used their Friendship is Magic shield to block some of Tanner's shots against, and that helped them win the Cup. Ireland could do something similar in future years with a new goaltender, maybe the Rainbow Guard or something. Who knows?
<div align="center">ADVANTAGE: Wolfpack because Cups.</div>

Thank you for all the kind words <a href='index.php?showuser=1322' rel='nofollow' alt='profile link' class='user-tagged mgroup-45'>mpc</a>. I still don't know what to think about Timo but I hope I get to the chance to be the goalie that takes Los Angeles back to the cup.
