The problem (at least from my perspective) is the second half of the season typically is not all that interesting to me, and extending it to longer just makes it feel like it drags on even longer.

That's definitely a concern, having more of a mid-season lull would probablybe the greatest risk here. But I think there are lots of options we could explore to spice things up, from introducing more special events and building more hype around stuff like the ASG or our own Winter Classic/Stadium Series to additional activites centered around the fantasy or PT system. We could also simply introduce one off-day per week where there are no regular sims, which would both make the season longer even without adding any games and would take some pressure off the simmer, while not really costing the rest of us anything. I think we'd all be fine if Sunday (or whatever day the simmer chooses) was a rest day.
And btw I do agree that PGS need to die and that PbPs might need to be reformed, but that by itself wouldn't really speed things up much, if at all.

The way the SBA does it is also really nice. Opens things up for more back and forth between teams, without having people lost interest due to PbPs which drastically vary in quality.
Regarding shortening off-season, could you do pre-season with a copy of the league file so that once rosters are in, pre-season starts whether or not anything else is updated? Kind of like the IIHF where builds are frozen to what they were at the end of the season. I'm not sure if it's been suggested here already, or if it's even feasible, but it could be a way to give everyone something to follow while the rest of the league prepares.
You could even have someone else sim the pre-season to give the main simmer more of a break.
