Raiders Draft Recap

The Raiders went into draft day with the 2nd, 3rd, 9th, 25th, and 41st overall picks. By the time the draft started, they had traded 9th overall and a conditional 1st round pick to the Vancouver Whalers in exchange for Chippy Chiclets and Matthew Rossi II.

"There was quite a few offers we were considering yesterday. A few of them feel through, a few we wanted a little more from the other team but weren't getting it. This one, we liked. It's a lot to give up. Vancouver got an early second in this year's draft and what will (hopefully) be a late first in next year's draft (it would become a second round pick if Chiclets is not sent down for S37). But we got an active, 350 TPE (almost) defenseman and a great depth player who's over 200 TPE. Chiclets has already met with many of the Raiders players and the team is getting along very well. He's a great guy and a very good player and we're happy to have him here", said Raiders GM Matthew Leetch.

Then, the draft finally started. Montreal selected Beaujeaux Biscuit first overall as many expected. Halifax now had the second overall pick and the third overall pick (which they acquired from Prince George for Zanarkand Abes). With the second overall pick, Halifax took Jordan Ryder.

"We had some great talks with him and his agent on draft day and we were pretty sure he was going to be a Raider, the pick just made it official".

Ryder will likely start the season on the Raiders second line with Dwayne Wyder and Chris Smulander (although the actual lines are not set in stone yet).

Then, the Raiders picked again at third overall, when they selected Hercules Rockefeller.

"Another guy we talked to early in the day, and we definitely had strong interest in. There were a few offers out there for number three, but in the end, we ended up keeping the pick and I'm happy we did".

Rockefeller will likely slot in on the third line with Eric Pelletier centering him and another player (yet to be determined).

The Raiders then wouldn't pick again until 25th overall where they selected defenseman Angelo Williams.

"At that point in the draft, you're kind of taking flyers on some players who might pan out for you. This guy has been around recently and has 161 TPE. Hopefully he'll stay active for us".

Williams could have a chance to play on the Raiders third pairing if he stays active. If not, he could be a replacement for Montek Ramrap on the bottom pair, who's going inactive.

Finally, Halifax selected goaltender Benjamin Blue with the 41st overall pick.

"He told us prior to the draft that he would be inactive until August 20th, so we felt it was a low risk, potential high reward situation if he comes back like he said he would. If not, it's not a huge deal".

This situation is kind of strange as Blue can't be signed until then, but the season will most likely have started. And the Raiders have a backup in Larry Enticer, but he hasn't been around too much and still has only 155 TPE.

To wrap it up, the Raiders front office is very happy with how the S36 SMJHL Draft went for them. They brought in some top talent and took chances on two potential steals in the later rounds. Only time will tell how good this draft really was for Halifax, but it looks pretty solid at the moment.

I'm still a little salty you didn't flip the order of your 2nd and 3rd overall selections to give me +1 TPE.

Good luck going forward.
