14. Texas Renegades
Edit: take this with a grain of salt. Im canadian.

For me Texas is known as a very sketchy state in general. Mainly people who are ultra protective of guns and are super racist. Not as racist as other states (looks at Alabama) but fairly racist. I am not really sure if it is true, I am assuming that the city parts are somewhat reasonable so I turned to other sources. So for states like Texas I found a ranking system that USNews put out because I do not know the quality of the state as I am a Canadian who has never lived in the US. For Texas, they were ranked 36th out of 50. Funny enough the one thing I thought would be the worst was actually not. Their crime rate is around the middle of the pack (27th out of 50) which I found quite shocking and interesting. Their infrastructure is also quite solid although I do not know if it is anymore since Harvey but I am sure the relief effort is underway and made great progress. That may be a bit lower right now because of that but overall Im going to take USNews’s word that they actually have nice things. This is where things go VERY downhill. Quality of life is some of the worst at 46th in the country. That is despite their economy being one of the best at 8th. The death warrant was signed when their healthcare was 38th and education was 37th in the country. The US healthcare and education system are already quite awful… Imagine being among the worst in the country. They are last because of those and a very poor quality of life. Did learn some things about Texas though!

This is one of the stupidest things I’ve ever read on this site. Many things are wrong about this. I’m also glad to see you took an opportunity to shit on my home state in some unrelated sidebar. If I wasn’t on a spring break vacation right now, I’d love to explain how idiotic you are

Apparently it’s also wrong to like guns. String me up now, ladies and gents.

I just find it interesting that when I was working with an office of approximately 15-20 Canadians in the states that all said our health care was way better than Canada. Because you can actually see a doctor when you go to the doctors office as opposed to being put on a waiting list where you would more than likely be over the illness before they got to you the waiting list. They could not believe that you could see a doctor the same day that you made the appointment.

Although I will just have to take their word for it as I cannot speak to Canada's health care as I have never used it. I would not want to make judgements on something I personally never experienced.
Dislocated my knee in october and I had to wait until last saturday at 10:30 PM for an MRI so they are definitely right about the speed or availability of our health care up here. I still cant complain too much because I dont have private insurance and didnt pay a dime.

Canada's healthcare is better in that it can serve everyone. So if you are lower middle class (like my family growing up) and you don't have health benefits, you still get coverage. While in the States it is likely we would have fallen into that medicaide gap that exists

If you were working in an office with people it is likely they would have had benefits or a higher wage that allowed them to be able to pay for healthcare. Or could afford insurance anyway so it was better in the States because there wasn't that backlog of people without insurance or benefits clogging the system. It depends on where you look at it from, but yeah Canada has a ton of wait times and ER's are constantly full even for minor injuries and stuff because it is free. We also don't have enough doctors, but I'd still rather have Canadian healthcare because of the situation I grew up in and knowing that we would have been left out in the States and that would have seriously sucked

I said office to be generic. I worked for a small company, marking trees in the woods. The pay for marking trees in the woods, is what it sounds like. Although we did process the data into the computer the office. There is no way that income neared middle class but I was just out of school and paying my dues. And that statement about health care was what I was told by Canadians doing the same job I was doing. But they (the Canadians) were just do it with dipping weepy poison oak, coughing and hacking or dealing with whatever ailment they had everywhere in the workplace until they found out or were told that they could just go to the doctor. Our company did provided the legal minimum insurance requirements and if I remember right that might have been the only benefits offered except for maybe borrowing the company truck to move over the weekend. Thank god my time there was brief, Although I worked with some great people and made a few fantasy sports friends that I still chat with today. Again I have never used the Canadian health care thus I would not want to comment on it. I was just saying that I have differently from Canadians that have used both systems.

Edit: Although a few of them were Newfies.

I know, just explaining what the possible reasons they preferred American healthcare. Especially if you're in a profession that requires you to get a lot of medical aid (I was when I worked construction, probably got stitches in my hand 3 times) it can be frustrating, because, while it's free, the waiting times are ridiculous

So just kind of allocating the pros and cons of each and why they might have felt that way, especially since you haven't really seen the Canadian healthcare system in action. It's actually not that great in the grand scheme of things, and we rank very middling

First of all, if you need to see a doctor right away, that's called the ER. Sure, you'll have to wait a long time, but you'll get seen some time that day. A big issue with wait times is because people go in there when they don't need to, and that slows people down.

If you need to see a doctor but don't think it's ER-worthy, you can also go into one of the plenty of walk-in clinics that are available. Again, you'll have to wait a bit because tons of people go there for whatever reason.

If you don't need to see a doctor right away, and wanna see one anyway just to "make sure you're fine", then schedule an appointment for the next day. Not a big deal, they'll accomodate.

In all cases, a lot of people will be visiting the doctor because everyone can. That's why Canadians prefer their health care. Everyone's able to get in no matter what background you come from, how much money you have, etc. Flick of the wrist, show your health card and you're good. It's not about wait times, or equipment, or any of that. It's just the fact that you can see a doctor whenever you want without being scared of it breaking the bank.

Also, if you get benefits from work or whatever then that helps out a lot too. But also now, at least in Ontario (I'm not sure about other provinces), you can get generic brand prescription meds for free if you're.....25 and under? I don't remember what it is, I haven't needed any meds lately, thankfully.

This is correct. Everyone 25 and under in Ontario is covered for generic brand prescriptions by the government. There are even special cases where they will cover real brand names as well. A lot of "brand name" companies also offer what is called a smart card which allows you to get the brand name at a seriously discounted cost. When it comes to medication we are quite fortunate.

I'd like to get mad at your write up of Hamilton, but I can't muster up the energy to write a rebuttal. Just know you are mostly wrong.

The knowledge that the writer is a moron perhaps. Not sure what else can really be gleaned from it though.

Daily reminder that fencing off an arbitrary chunk of a large metropolitan suburban area, only referring to that part as the actual city, and then getting confused whenever someone tries to talk about the entire metropolitan area "because those are other cities" is really weird.
