The great NEW/SEA shitshow saga of S41

There's always a risk when you don't pick your player with the first available selection your team has.

Nike's was pretty rough though, he wasn't even top 5 TPE wise in that draft and was pretty much forced to get the first overallpick. It didn't even come cheap, he had to give his best player up in spidey who had been really loyal.

It doesn't mean he wasn't trying to extort him.
If the majority of people think it was extortion, perhaps the rules need to be looked at. But wasn't the delay before his player could be auto-drafted put in place to prevent this very problem from occurring? A team really wants someones recreate, but also wants to use their picks to bring in new faces, so they make the recreate the GM to get them for free.

The system can always be exploited. Is that what happened here? No, and I don't think samee was purposefully trying to game the system either. Unfortunately, he took a risk by not selecting his guy early and got burned. From my perspective, the other GMs agreed to give him the first round to select his player before proceeding to select the best player available. I think that's pretty reasonable considering he could have been selected freely with the top pick.

NEW left some great players on the board to do this... I just don't understand and I applaud samee for sticking to his guns and not dealing with this. No reason he shouldn't have been allowed to just take himself with his second. The rule is in place to prevent draft circumvention and I think it's clear it was never Seattle's intention to do that in this situation.

It's pretty remarkable that a lot of people seem to think samee should have been gifted his player. The rule made him eligible for the draft. The fact of the matter is that there was very little available at this point of the draft. I'm sure there were some teams that still valued some of the players available. But obviously others didn't. To expect GM's to not try to recoup at least some value in a draft pick, so that another team doesn't have to give up proper value is unreasonable. If samee wouldn't have flipped out right away he could have probably found a better solution.

That's not different than this draft though, people are treating it differently because it's samee. NEW wanted to pass up actual prospects to hold Samee hostage because it was Samee. No one wanted to hold TDW hostage because it was TDW.[/b]
It's kind of different not saying there weren't prospects, but star players were taken in the 3rd round of that draft and picks 27-39 got skipped today.

The rule is not to prevent this situation, it's to prevent players who aren't serious about being GM from being temporarily named to get a free player. Samee has been GM all season, he's clearly actually the GM, it's not a case of Seattle trying to circumvent the draft.

Most GMs agreed to give him the 22nd pick - his earliest 2nd - as is the rule for drafting co-GMs. He was not trying to circumvent the draft, so most GMs had no issue with him using the co-GM rule to take his player. I don't think it's all that reasonable, considering there's no benefit for other teams.

It doesn't matter who went after him.

There were 20 picks ahead of TDW, and 5 solid busts. Flower, Brennan Kennedy, Alex Reed, Waters, Eichele, even Selich.

It doesn't change that if he was a free prospect he would have gone 1st round, as a great recreate, but he didn't because GMs respected him.

I wouldnt call Selich a bust, man. He's been a solid 40-50 player most season.

I did list him 6th on a list of 5 busts

He's still been inactive for 5 seasons and only reached 1100 TPE, no team exactly a strong case for 2nd overall

I don't feel bad for Samee or Seattle. And, honestly, he made the right move, granted, after not reading the rules correctly. However, samee literally said he would retire if drafted by someone else before 22nd a million times in the GM Discord. I just don't understand what kind of horrible lack of thinking caused NEW to do this.

Fair enough yeah, that tpe level hurts looking at it. Still plays like one though, thanks simonT.

I honestly feel that there wasn't anybody they wanted to draft. Now that you can't trade cap space it will be more risky to add players who are semi-active and could potentially bail and eat up a chunk of your cap space. Why not try to trade for future assets? I was prepared to do the same thing at #20 if he was available. I told samee this before the draft so he knew it was a possibility. We would have passed on the pick if not for finding a last minute trade. I think Samee just assumed that people would let him select his player even though there was nothing of value left to some teams.

Obviously it's not worth this whole shitshow and I feel bad for Toivo and New England, a great person and an organization that has proven to be one of the best in our league for years.

Because you were never going to get future assets? Samee was clear, he told everybody, more than once, before the draft that he would retire on the spot if he was picked by someone else. Why would he give up assets to his team, when he could just retire, keep all his assets, and get his new player next season, for free? NEW was never going to get anything out of this, you never would have got anything out of this.

I don't feel bad in the slightest for New England, and no one should. They knew what they were doing, they knew this would only reflect badly on them, and they still brought it on themselves. They deserve every bit of backlash they get for it. They were fully aware of what they were doing.
