WFT's: Make the Case (S46)

Scoring in the juniors is way down this year due to all the top level talent leaving to the SHL this season

Have you ever heard of Johnny Sins? The pornstar turned hockey player? He's still pushing hard in the SMJHL, making sure to grind players into those corners and making sure they don't leave without being worked over hard. Talent has not left. Plus 'talent' doesn't mean scoring wingers only.

This might have been a good take if they had continued their early season ways but their 11 game losing streak shot them back down the rankings and they closed out the season being forced to fight in the first round by completing the slip from 1st to 7th. If they had really changed their ways I don't think they would have fallen so far. A good playoff performance would prove that wrong but I think Colorado might pull out the first round upset. Overall I think they are on an upward trend but not enough to say they have turned the corner. Right now this season is something akin to the Detroit Lions, Start hot and fill the fans with hope. Then the crushing reality of who you are rooting for sets in as they slide down the standings.

BS

Hey I've grown up in Michigan, I was raised a Lions fan.

It's nothing but pain I wouldn't wish on anyone. I hope Halifax doesn't become this, but we'll have to wait and see.

Against... sort of.

I don't believe that all of the top-level talent left last season. If all of the top-level talent left, new roles would be filled and everything would balance out to normal. The distribution of which talents left last season is more influential, as defenseman and goalies are more likely to cook longer in the SMJHL. Goalies especially are the most likely to spend additional years in the SHL. Due to the low bar set for backup goalie games, teams really only need one active goalie. With only 16 consistent jobs for goalies in the SHL, and fewer defensive jobs than forward ones, strong defending/goaltending still remains while many forwards cycle into the SHL much quicker

- After 7 seasons straight of missing the playoffs, the Manhattan Rage move into the S46 post season as 1 of the favorites to win a title.

For. Manhattan deserves this and they are the epitome of a rebuild. Though, with JayWhy behind the bench, no one should be surprised at all. He knows what makes a good player and he is a good leader. A visionary. Congrats to Manhattan on a great season.

FOR. I'm for this in the sense that is WAS complete shock, and BS to be honest. Texas is clearly the better team in every aspect.

- The Buffalo Stampede will go from last place in the East in S45 to Challenge Cup champions in S46

Against
While I'd certainly want Buffalo to go from last to first in one season, I can't help but feel that SimonT has other plans. I hope I'm wrong but I can see them making the finals, but fall just short. I think S47 they'll probably win it all.

Against.

I wouldn't call making it outta the bottom 2 of the standings in one season only to plummet the next one turning the corner. Halifax has made trades for a supposed playoff run that doesn't exist, and for players that'll be leaving them the upcoming season - once again leaving them gutted at the bottom of the standings.

This is utter BS.

One can argue that the Winnipeg Jets in their prime had far better lines than this one. Visser - Evans - Volkova is far better and could beat this line to a pulp (not to mention Lombardi couldn’t do SHIT with Minnesota)

BS! On a technicality.

Evans-Visser-Volkova was never a line. Before Volks signed in Winnipeg, I was firmly entrenched as 2C after moving from wing to center.

With that said, this question is pretty subjective and Blues makes a good point in that regard. While the numbers put together by this Minnesota line *this season* are probably unmatched, in terms of talent I would have taken Visser-Bearss-Volkova out of my Winnipeg years. Hell, even I was once on a line with three league MVPs alongside Kane and Luke Fleming, and that wasn't even the top line in Winnipeg at the time because of Visser-Bearss-Volks.

You also have to consider lines like Edmonton's Theo Kane-Pedro Sarantez-Ivan Koroviev in S33, IMO, and I'm sure I'm missing some others.

That was the most Homer response you could have fielded.

You expect to win top spot in the West with the 21st leading scorer and the 13th leading goal getter?

Look at the competition of Minnesota, they are the team to beat in the West. Straight up in Goals and Points they get consistent point production from their line up, but most especially from their top scorers. Minnesota's top line combined for 220 Points this season. New Orleans top line barely cracked 130. Further to that how many games did your goalie steal for you? At least 4 confirmed because he posted 4 shutouts which is tied for most in the league. New Orleans has a hot goalie but lacks the offence.

I am not denying New Orleans has performed well for an expansion team but lets not pretend like they are the team to beat, after all you don't make friends with salad.

To tie into my last response, out of those examples I provided for possible alternatives to "best line EVAR," guess how many Cups they won? Zilch. I won't say you *can't* win a Cup with just one strong line - see Season 34 Manhattan, Season 37 Winnipeg - but it's definitely more difficult than it was with the rule changes since that time.

New Orleans compares very similarly to the Season 42 Calgary Dragons. Calgary didn't have a single player over 53 points, but had balanced scoring throughout the lineup (I would say New Orleans is more balanced). Calgary was middle-of-the-road offensively but had one of the league's top GAA.

Again, not saying New Orleans *will* win or Minnesota *won't* win. But to seem so confident it will play out the other way based on the dominance of that line is pretty misguided.

For: The Better Conference is now.. the Eastern Conferance

The eastern conference has benefited from the addition of 2 more teams. The expansion draft seemed to have hit the west slightly harder, and the growth and records of the East show that teams there we able to play the expansion draft and free agent market smarter than others were, allowing them to increase their presence in the league

Scoring in the juniors is way down this year due to all the top level talent leaving to the SHL this season

Against:
Scoring is down because we use SimonT who everyone knows is a fickle bastard. The cap holds everyone to the same standards and I really haven't seen that many less capped players on quite a few teams. I just don't think the current setup for the SMJHL is condusive to scoring period.

- After 7 seasons straight of missing the playoffs, the Manhattan Rage move into the S46 post season as 1 of the favorites to win a title.

FOR:
Maybe I'm a bit biased, but I think the Rage can truly be considered a favorite to win the title (or at least make it to the championship). If you look at the bracket, they first play Toronto, whom they are 3-1 against this season (one SOW). Then, we'd play either Buffalo, Tampa Bay, or Hamilton. Against those teams this season, we have gone a respective 2-1-1, 3-2-1, and 2-1-1. It's fair to say from those that we have a good shot at winning any o those matchups. I won't go through all of the possible matchups in the final, but let me just say don't count out the Rage!

- West Kendall Platoon missing the playoffs marks the end of a great run of prosperity.

Against. I'm not saying this because I just joined the team in the past off-season. Our team was great until the last few games of the season where our sim luck started running out and the Simon T. System went to favor for other teams in that race for the final playoff spot. That's how the simulator works in my eyes. And plus now we have a chance to have a lottery pick in a very promising draft, while having more points then most teams in the West.

yeah it is. See, the East has all star defenseman Jules Watt coming up. Jules Watt will single handedly destory everyone in the West. Like you could put a bunch of buts in the East and just cause they have Jules Watt makes them automatically better

Agree, The Stampede had too many egos and puck hogs on their team. As soon as they lost two of them in Luke Atmey and Fredrich Koenig they solved their issues an became the best team in the league. I would be shocked if they aren't the champions this season.
