Have we, here in the SHL/SMJHL, entered a new era of betting? This is the question I will attempt to answer today. I've done a deep dive into the bets made in the PvP betting thread since its inception in 2016. Here is a list of every serious bet made and accepted within.
36 bets in just shy of 3 years. 36 bets in 33 months to be precise, giving us an average of 1.09 bets a month. As per the list, however, the bets are not steady over time. There are many periods of rapid betting and then other periods where no bets are made. For instance, 7 bets were made in November of 2016, but 0 bets were made between October 6th 2017 and May 31st 2018. I believe there to be two distinct eras of betting. First was from mid October 2016 lasting until mid February 2017. In this period of time 15 bets were placed, almost half the total number of bets ever. An average of 3.75 bets per month were placed in this era, well above average. 12.4 million dollars exchanged hands, just under 21% of the total amount of 59.4 million dollars. I believe the second era to be much more recent and still ongoing. Beginning in February, 10 bets have been made in 3 months, averaging 3.33 bets a month. The first era had a slightly higher average, although it was four months in length. The money, however, it what stands out. These 10 bets have moved around 26 million dollars, over twice as much as the 15 bets moved around in the first era. 26 million is just under 44% of the total 59.4 million. If we match both eras to 15 bets, keeping the average money earned the same, the second era will earn another 13 million dollars. In between these two eras, there were 9 bets placed in 22 months, an average of .4 bets a month. Will we see another dead period of betting, before bets come back with even larger wagers? Betting does appear to be increasing, but at a very slow pace.

@prettyburn you may want to look into who processed those transactions for over the maximum allowed $1,000,000 bets.
