TEAM DACH ROSTER ANNOUNCEMENT
With the playoffs in both the SMJHL and SHL behind us, and the off-season officially starting, it is time for our younger players to hit the ice again in the World Juniors. After a successful run medal run in S51, where a strong Team DACH came in third and picked up the bronze medal, the team is now looking to build on that success and challenge the rest of the world for the gold medal. As GM’s we see two familiar faces: @Mutedfaith is returning after last season’s success, and @sve7en has joined the GM-team for Team DACH, after leading Team Prospect World through the tournament in S51. The roster for Team DACH is enormously stacked again, with loads of strong players in all positions. Unfortunately, we saw our two starting goalies age/cap out; but we’ve managed to find none other than British Isles third goalie Cillian Kavanagh willing to take the net for us in his, and our, quest for gold. His back-up for the tournament will be rookie Frankie Holz, who will probably be happy to just hand Kavanagh a water bottle from time to time and maybe help him fasten his legguards. In defense, we have 4 out of 6 of last seasons’ players returning, with Martin Nemo and Noah Andros being replaced by German rookie defense Erben Kasius and Swiss first-timer Bryce Turner. The top-4 core looks pretty strong, with Zimmermann, Kuster, Zhernov and Norris not only competing for Team Dacht in the WJC, but all four are valued members of Team Switzerland for the upcoming IIHF championship as well. The roster includes 14 forwards, just like last season. Luca Veccelli, Riley Kuse and Ricky Bobby have been replaced by youngsters Burlok Sulfurgold (Germany), Jimmy Wagner (Austria) and Steve Harrington (Germany). All three can look back on a strong SMJHL season and are hoping on a chance to show their skills and help Team DACH to a gold medal in this WJC tournament. GOALIES
#30: Cillian Kavanagh @takethehorizon – Ireland (on loan) With the Isles having 3 stellar goalies, and us only one, it made sense to bring him in on a loan for this year’s WJC. We’re happy to have the second year Knight in the ranks and we’re going to treat him to a plethora of sausages and drinks afterwards. He’s a great personality and an absolute vacuum, snagging pucks out of the air and seemingly never giving up a rebound. #30: Frankie Holz @Viperxhawks19 – Germany A young gun getting his shot. S54 prospect Frankie Holtz has really impressed in the youth leagues and we wanted to see if he can be Team DACH’s goalie of the future. Time will tell in that regard, but he’s got a youthful spring to his agility and has quick reactions so he could be the next big SMJHL stud. DEFENSEMEN
Fresh off winning the Four Star Cup with the Anaheim Outlaws, this play making defenseman will look to add more to his trophy case this summer with Team DACH. Despite only notching 15 points in S52. Ursin is always a threat with the puck on his tape and has a center-like eye for finding open players on the ice. Zimmermann is also playing in the IIHF championship for Team Switzerland this season, making his fourth appearances on the big stage. #13: Daniel Kuster @kuschy – Switzerland A near PPG defenseman for the Colorado Raptors this year, the S50 prospect is ready for another run at gold. A more technical defender than Zimmermann, Kuster is also a sure passer who is a notable threat in the offensive zone while more than holding down his defensive responsibility. Kuster is also on the Team Switzerland roster for the IIHF championship this fourth season. #09: Danila Zhernov @iOBESE – Switzerland The stay at home defenseman transfer from the Ukraine, Zhernov managed to put up over 40 points for the Kelowna Knights this season. The heavy hitting S51 prospect will bring some physicality to the WJC not commonly seen from high skill players. Like his adopted countrymen before him, Zhernov is playing for Team Switzerland in the IIHF championship this season. #10: Erben Kasius @Paq – Germany The lone shoot first Defenseman on Team DACH this season, Kasius has an absolute cannon, has the legs to get around the rink, and plays solid defense to boot. The Dutch transfer put together a solid 25 point season for the St. Louis Scarecrows in his rookie year and he’s looking to keep that production going in his first year for the central European powerhouse. #09: Lando Norris @BreDoubleT – Germany A Team DACH staple at this point, Lando is a well-rounded player who will look to use his experience and well-rounded game to mentor the two Team DACH rookie defenders and provide a solid foundation on whatever forward line he’s paired with each shift. Hopefully we can send him off with a gold medal. #11: Bryce Turner @Pandakazi – Switzerland The fourth and final Swiss defender for Team DACH, Turner put in a respectable -2 while only scoring 9 points on the Colorado Raptors second pairing this season. He blocked plenty of shots though, almost 1 per game, on his way to ensuring his reputation as a grindy up and down defenseman always willing to go the extra mile for his team. That grit will be key as he looks to lock down other top lines in the tournament. RIGHT WING
Coming in hot from a high scoring SMJHL season with the Detroit Falcons, Cal Labovitch will be looking to bring some of that energy to the WJC this season. In his third WJC tournament, everybody expects the young setup man to continue his point scoring rampage and help the team outscore their opponents. He'll also be a part of the IIHF squad for Team Switzerland, and wants to bring home the gold in both tournaments this season. #43: Mega Tron @"Jakub" – Austria The booming 6’4 Mega “Megatron” Tron quickly made a name for himself last year, laying the boom on opposing centers in his rookie year with the St. Louis Scarecrows, then following that up with booming at WJC last season, and the most recent season with the Scarecrows where he was good for 33 points from the second line. #76: Alexander Wachter @MP7 – Austria Finishing his season with a third best in the SMJHL +23 off of 38 points for the Carolina Kraken, Watcher is another Team DACH staple looking to go out with a gold medal. One of the Kraken’s lethal top 6 core, Watcher had one of the best shots in the J, but was also trusted to be responsible on defense, often shadowing opposing wingers. The Texas Renegades’ future sniper will be expected to shoulder a heavy scoring load this WJC and he’s definitely up to the task. #86: Burlok Sulfurgold @leviadan – Germany The eternal Burlok Sulfurgold is new to Team DACH, but is a welcome addition. As a rookie for the Detroit Falcons this season, he grinded his way to a healthy 12 points and spent a total of 37 minutes in the box on just 14 minutes of ice time a game. The heavy hitting, young winger was the team leader in hits from forwards with 71 and will be fully prepared to grind out games on the world junior stage. #72: Jimmy Wagner @sve7en – Austria The self-proclaimed “fastest skater in the J”, Wagner led a surprisingly dangerous prospect team to some favourable results last season. The somewhat vocal S53 prospect has a flashy game that didn’t transition as cleanly to America as he had probably hoped, and will look to learn from some of the J’s greats having now made Team DACH. CENTERS
Anchorage Armada’s second top scorer on the year, van der Heijden came over from the Netherlands and hasn’t stepped off the gas since. Mitchell is a stud on both ends of the ice, seems to never lose a faceoff, and has an absolute cannon for someone who sits down low in the slot a lot. He will also be playing for Team Switzerland in the upcoming IIHF tournament. #34: Daniel Bischoff @dylanjj37 – Switzerland Coming back for one more ride with Team DACH, Bischoff is a true gem for both the central European juggernaut and the Anchorage Armada. While he wasn’t able to repeat as a Four Star Champion, the offensive powerhouse will be a core force for Team DACH’s gold medal run again this year. Daniel is another of the Swiss playing both the WJC and IIHF tournaments as well, having locked up the A in the IIHF roster as well. He is also Team DACH's best Dylan. #83: Rocco Berni @Blues – Switzerland Rocco is another Knight on the young Team DACH squad, and he was an obvious inclusion. Berni amassed 22 points this past season from the third line, and it’s obvious how he did that when you watch him play. He’s a true point guard on ice, a threat to shoot, but always looking to set guys up with perfectly placed passes. LEFT WING
Vanice, one of the junior league’s true snipers, makes a reappearance for a final year in the Team DACH uniform before heading off to Austria’s IIHF team full time. He’s both a breakaway threat in transition, and a point shooter extraordinaire, with enough knowledge of the game to cover his role defensively. In his last season with the Newfoundland Berserkers, Thomas found himself 42 points, good for second on a team that many thought could be a Cinderella story. #14: William Hartmann @"thecanadiancanuck" – Switzerland More heavy hitting Team DACH-men from the S53 class, Hartmann was second in hits this season to the infamous LPLL, cementing himself as a threat to wingers with their heads down for the next decade. A responsible defender, Hartmann struggled to find points in his rookie year with the Vancouver Whalers, but will have plenty of opportunity to get experience on Team DACH as well as Team Switzerland in the IIHF tournament. #34: Steve Harrington @"NeonLime" – Germany Another new face for Team DACH, Harrington was a smooth consistent playmaker for the Newfoundland Berserkers, racking up 17 points and the “A” patch to boot. While he’s not the strongest winger to ever make the bottom of a roster, he’s a natural leader and has the technical skill to back up some of Team DACH’s immense physicality. #21: Cassidy Lhotsky @Kasterborous – Austria He’ll tell you he’s primarily a setup guy who doesn’t really play the body, but he’s just being modest. Cassidy is a grinder, who is just as comfortable dangling someone as he is laying the body on someone. He embodies what we love about our great collaboration. The culmination of skill, smarts, and strength, rolled up into a great product. #92: Andrey Barbashev II @RaiN – Austria The shot leader, and second leading goal scorer for the Kelowna knight, their alternate captain and S50 veteran is also joining us for one last ride. A scoring machine with a gifted mind for hockey strategy, Andrey has put up 130 points in his 4 years as a Knight and will once again be looked upon as a leader as he tries to add a second WJC gold to his trophy case before heading off to the West Kendall Platoon. #93: Theo Golury @HabsFanFromOntario – Austria Kelowna’s replacement for Barbashev in the future, you can see AB’s influence here. A slick goal scorer with a sharp eye and great anticipation skills, he’s looking to carry his special teams expertise to Moscow and add to the 10 points he acquired playing on the power play and penalty kill. One last juniors ride with his countryman, teammate, and friend will be the cherry on top as well.
