Toronto North Stars Rebuild: S49 -> Present
#1

Taking over in S49, with a team that the season before got swept in the first round. A team with an severely aging goalie, a poor offensive core, and an aging defensive core, it makes sense for ML to come in and blow everything up and start from the ground up.

There are a couple checklists a team needs for a good rebuild

A goalie of the future
Luckily in the S47 draft in the 2nd round Toronto found their future goalie in Harry Carpet, which is a great sign as a goalie is always one of the hardest thing to procure, and takes time to develop a good one at that.
A good source of prospects
Usually their GM and Co-GM are also recreating or high enough TPE to help carry the team
Tank to their hearts content

So lets see their checklist in S49

Already got their goalie
Prospects: (and where they are now)
Ja'Aj Coitus-Wagg - No longer apart of the team now
Knox Booth - Traded away
Derek Bohne Jr -Traded away
Mika Kandinsky  - star player on their team
Jan Zacha - decent 3rd liner, semi active to inactive
Jared Lammi - No Longer part of the team now
No Co-GM, and ML is still one of the best players in the league, and entering regression
4th last in the league, did not win any lottery

What happened in that season?

Well first lets rewind back to right before the S49 draft, as they trade away Bob Bergan to NOLA

7/31/19
TOR - ML
NOLA S49 1st[Knox Booth], NOLA S53/S54 2nd[TBD]*whichever is reddit draft, NOLA S53 2nd[Toki Wartooth], NOLA S50 3rd[Andrei Petrikov]

NOLA - JoeK
Bob Bergen, TOR S53/S54 4th[Traded to LAP]*whichever is the reddit

Now in Hindsight we get to see the lasting effects of this trade, as ML picked Toki Wartooth in NOLA’s 2nd round pick. Bergen became a very effective defenseman for NOLA, and ML drafted 3 prospects from it.

8/1/19
After the draft, believing in Harry Carpet to be the starter, ML traded away newly acquired Knox Booth to LAP

TOR - ML
MAN S50 2nd[Ursin Zimmermann]

LAP - wasty
Knox Booth

And ML later on drafted his future Co GM and defenseman Ursin Zimmermann.

8/3/19
2 Days after, continuing with the rebuild, they also parted ways with long time defenseman Jordan Von Matt to Edmonton for a future 1st

TOR - ML002
EDM S51 1st[Stracimir Petrović]

EDM - Keygan
Jordan Von Matt (50% Retained)

9/22/19

The day of the S50 Draft, the reddit draft.

There is a trade to be made before the draft starts:

TOR - ML002
TBB S50 2nd[Daniel Kuster], MIN S50 3rd[Jay Reeves]

TBB - JSS
TOR S50 2nd[James Ronlain]

To a GM that wanted to move up in the draft, ML chose to move back to secure another pick.

And with that

Toronto Picks

Bobby Lane
Daniel Kuster
Ursin Zimmermann
Jay Reeves
Andrei Petrikov

Along with that he send down all of them along with Jan Zacha and Derek Bohne Jr. He also calls up Mika Kandinsky.

In the S51 Season, there was a trade that happened

9/25/19
TOR - ML002
Cal Clucker
TBB - JSS
TOR S52/53 3rd[James Manzi ]*S52 3rd moves up if S52 is a r/hockey draft

So ML gota semi active for a non reddit 3rd from that trade.

In that season as well, they made the playoffs actually, and lost in the 2nd round of the playoffs, which is good for 9th in the draft order.

And via the trade they got in the Jordan Von Matt Trade, they drafted

Ruslan Zaporozhets
Stracimir Petrović
Joakim Ohlund

In that draft.

Now in his prospect pool he has

Stracimir Petrović
Jan Zacha
Bobby Lane
Daniel Kuster
Ursin Zimmermann
Jay Reeves
Andrei Petrikov
Cal Clucker
Ruslan Zaporozhets

In the offseason.

Also in the offseason he trades Bohne to the Rage for

11/17/19
TOR -  ML002
  MAN S54 2nd[TBD]
MAN - JayWhy
Derek Bohne Jr.

As Bohne Jr. wanted out of Toronto, and Toronto got a 2nd out of it.

He also aquired a player and a pick from San Francisco as well

11/18/19
TOR  - ML002
Bobby Bobcalf, SFP S53 2nd[Traded to MIN]

SFP - Grapehead
TOR S53 3rd[Trevor Johnson]

Which is very beneficial to Toronto.

Along with the a lot of send downs, to go along with the rebuild he already has a few key contributing members on the roster like Harry Carpet and  Mika Kandinsky, which should be their starting goalie and #1 C moving forward.

With the S51 season coming, and Toronto coming into last place in the eastern conference, and 13th overall, they will get 4th OA in the S52 draft. Another Major thing that happens is that ML player retires, in order to help the rebuild in 2 ways.

1, the trade is

1/11/20
TOR - ML002
Kenji Yoshimura,LAP S54 1st[Traded to MIN], LAP S55 4th[TBD]*(conditional on reddit draft so could be S55 or S56)
LAP - Wasty
Mikhail Lokitonov ($1M retained) *On HTD that goes up to $5mil retained to $4mil

So what happens is that LAP gets Lokitonov in exchange for a non reddit 1st, and a reddit 4ht round pick, plus a filler player for his player.

And since ML recreated as a defenseman, they will now have a #1 C, #1 D, and #1 G, which is the basis for creating a great team.

Also in the S52 Entry Draft Toronto they manage to draft

Rhys Pritchard
Ryan Cvitkovich

In the draft, making is so in that season they called up

Bobby Bobcalf
Jan Zacha
Bobby Lane
Cal Clucker
Andrei Petrikov

Where all of them but Lane are more depth pieces, and they sent

Ursin Zimmerman
Daniel Kuster
Jay Reeves
Stracimir Petrović
Ruslan Zaporozhets

Down to the SMJHL to develop more.

So With that Toronto is slowly getting younger and better each season.

In the S52 season they managed to make the playoffs again, so they are picking 8th in the S53 draft.

Before the draft Toronto also made a trade to get 2 more semi actives

3/4/20

TOR - ML002
Kevin Robinson, First Name Last Name
EDM - Keygan
TOR S54 4th[TBD]

So Toronto gets 2 semi-actives for virtually free, which is solid.

As well as making moves, he also made the trade of

TOR -  ML002
Danny Martson, NOLA S53 3rd[Braden Lowrie]

MIN - SpartanGibbles
LAP S54 1st[TBD],SFP S53 2nd[Separa Borro]

So when Martson was on the market, who was recently drafted in the 1st round in S52, ML hopped on board, and sent away a non reddit 1st and a reddit 2nd to get Martson and a 3rd, which helps get a solid core from S50 - S53

In the big reddit draft Toronto drafted

Jack Kanoff
Taylor Johansson
Toki Wartooth
Braden Lowrie
Axel Meszaros

And with that their senddowns are

S53 Axel Meszaros
S52 Rhys Pritchard
S52 Ryan Cvitkovich
S51 Ruslan Zaporozhets
S51 Stracimir Petrović
S50 Jay Reeves (Waivers)

And called up are
S50 Daniel Kuster
S50 Ursin Zimmerman
S50 First Name Last Name
S50 Kevin Robinson

So, with another wave of callups, there is still a long way to go on the rebuilding, but its a great start. You can see Toronto goes a couple ways of rebuilding. One is collecting semi-actives from teams that cannot hold onto them, and slowly but surely having them reach TPE levels that are viable. Another way is tanking and drafting a lot of players, like getting Rich, and NotoriousTron.

I like that it starts with us getting swept in the playoffs and then ends with the same thing. Time is a flat circle

Nice analysis. I think ML has been doing a great job and to everyone who doesn't want to be on our team because we're "bad" now: your loss.

Interesting

It’s something I think about - was 1 trade 15 seasons ago a big catalyst for Toronto to have to rebuild? Could they have competed for 5 more seasons? It wasn’t even really a bad trade. But if I stand pat in S37 instead of trading down 1 spot, Toronto has Tor Tuck, and Tommy Tuck never wants to go to Edmonton. 7th pick for 8th and a future 2nd isn’t a bad trade. But it still was one of the worse trades I made

its those questions that are always fun to ponder, at least if I wasnt the GM. But the butterfly effect like 2 years later IRL is weird to think about
