(Graded) Deep Dive #1 - Remembering the S25 Kelowna Knights

With the state of the indexes, it's pretty difficult to write about anything because I just came back to the league and I can't say I have followed much of what happened since except when the Citadelles were involved.

What I can write about though (and especially have enough to say to meet the minimum amount of words required) is one of my fondest memories of this league: the S25 SMJHL season and playoffs, which resulted in my only cup on the SHL as a whole... because the IIHF doesn't really count, does it?

Back then, there were only 8 teams, and Kelowna already had quite the track record. I had been drafted to the team in the previous season along with pretty much what made up the core of the team in S25: Koroviev, Vilhjalmsson, Lundberg, Flow and probably others I forgot. Unfortunately, one of our fellow S24 draftees, Nick Scholz, was called up to play for Portland immediately because back in my day, true rookies could be a thing. We acquired other great teammates in the draft, notably in Mainio Makinen and Christoffer Bjornsson. Another addition who perhaps was not as memorable was Sludge, who was one of the funniest dudes I had the pleasure to meet on this website. I still, to this day, threaten to demand Lebron money in his honour whenever I can.

The final big piece of the puzzle was Randy Randleman, our fearless leader. He was a 3 season veteran of the SMJHL and I remember how we teased him about being ancient and being the oldest ever SMJHL player. He had been drafted by a stacked Dragons team so he stayed down longer than most. How times have changed.

Let me just say, Jedi and Kel knew how to build a team and keep things fun, engaging. I don't exactly remember how involved Kel was but Jedi was always present in the locker room, ready to help, and he organized stuff to keep us entertained. It was so easy to stay motivated to keep updating and try to top our draft class in TPE.

As far as the season went, we did good. I don't think we finished first but we were among the good teams. Our offense was of course led by Randleman and by inactive Stacker Pentecost, who was one of the best dmen in the league at the time. We had acquired him in a trade with the Scarecrows the season before. Koroviev also had a monster season and I turned into a goon for some reason. I sure miss the good ol' SimonT days that had you drop the gloves on the regular even if you had no points in fighting nor in checking. Bjornsson also did surprisingly well and shut up all the haters who were saying we were screwed without Igor Ogorodnikov.

During the playoffs, it was more of the same, with Randleman simply dominating. Other players stepped up too and Sludge took my place as the person who was out for blood. We ended up winning the cup in 5 against the Montréal Impact (RIP). I had 2 assists in the final game or something, Bjornsson was the player no one expected him to be... oh yeah and Dr. Timeturner Whooves (semi active at best I think?) had only 4 goals. In one game.

In conclusion, that team was awesome both in the locker room and on the ice and really got me into sim leagues in general. I hope I get the chance to win another championship with such a great group of people with baby Maxi. It's sad that a lot of them are now inactive but I'm glad to know a few remain and I look forward to maybe sharing a locker room with any of them again.
