(Graded) Patience is Key for the Falcons (Deep Dive #2)

The Detroit Falcons, what can you say about this team now that we are about 20 games into the season, other than “Ouch, that is rough”. The Falcons are currently standing at 2-16-2 with a whopping 49 goal differential. When one looks at statistics like that, it is hard to not see a silver lining. I decided to try and figure out just why this is happening. At first I thought they might just have an absolute killer schedule. Taking a quick glance at it and I see that they have indeed had a brutal schedule of 7 back to back games so far. Their first 6 games were over the course of 8 days… Yikes. That would wear anyone out.

As tough as that schedule is, it still doesn’t really answer why they are having such a rough time. So lets now look at the roster. This is where I truly believe is why they are having all of their trouble. My assumptions were correct as soon as I saw that they have 8 players from the S57 draft class, and another 8 from the S56 draft class. Having 16 out of 21 players be rookies absolutely explains their current record. The rosters average TPE is currently sitting at 289. So while the team isn’t 100% rookie players, the 5 veterans can only do so much work.

As I was looking at all this I felt bad for them until I had a quick “Oh Shit” moment. This team has been blown up and is currently in a rebuild phase. Come end of season, they might only be sending 2-3 people up the the SHL. They wont really be losing any players for the next few seasons. In 2 seasons, this team will be absolutely stacked with savvy veterans who have been grinding it out and have a chip on their shoulder.

This is all especially even more terrifying when we look at some of their youngsters, who look to really make a name for themselves. Left Defensman Wen Baters, while currently only at 3 points is absolutely crushing it defensively. 10 hits, 14 takeaways, and 28 blocked shots. He is leading the team with his takeaways. With a young defensman playing like that, it just means teams are gonna have a hard time in the future. Center Jonathan Granstrom is having a slow start offensively with only 6 points (which is still 4th on the team for points), but it looks like he has been training with the defensive coach as he is grinding it out with 26 hits and 43 blocked shots!! This Center is leading the team in blocked shots, that is just ridiculous.  If he just starts producing offensively he looks to be a scary matchup for any team. Left Defenseman Evangelos Giannopoulos is another young hot shot that is 3rd on the team for blocked shots with 35.  And Left Wing Yngve Simonsson who is producing on both sides of the ice. 3rd on the team for points, with 7. 3 Goals and 4 Assists. Two of those goals come on the Power Play. He is also seeing 18:45 minutes on average of ice time. This young man is getting lots of play time, getting power play ice time, and it is showing.

So while the Falcons are currently having a really really rough time, I just know they are biding their time and will be laughing their way to a championship in the up coming seasons. Patience is the key for them.
